“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:24
What has your attention? What are your eyes focused on? What occupies your thoughts? Those are all good questions. How about one more? Alright, go ahead. Where is your treasure? Why are you asking me all these questions? You are about to make an important decision, aren’t you? Yes, as a matter of fact I am. How you answer these questions will determine the direction of your life. Yes, I can see that. How are you going to answer these questions? They weren’t rhetorical questions? No, they were not. You expect an answer? Yes, I do.
Let me first say that my treasure is in heaven. I have no desire to store up things for my self here on earth. That’s good. Has that always been the case? No, much of my life has revolved around pursuing and acquiring things. But, no longer. Yes, that’s right. I’m glad to hear that. What are you pursuing instead? I’m pursuing you. I want to love, follow and serve you far above anything else. I not only want to do what you ask but I want to be the person you want me to be.In fact, being who you want to be enables me to do what you want me to do. Would you say that you can’t “do what” without “being who”? Yes, I would. I also know that you won’t finish molding and shaping my life until the day we met in heaven. Yes, that’s right. So you’re “becoming” and “doing” are happening at the same time, aren’t they? Yes, they are.
Let’s talk about your attention and focus a little more. I’m not sure what to say or what to think. About what? I have big decisions to make about the direction of my life. Whatever decision I make, I want it to be the one that best serves you. So you want to know what I think? Yes, I do. Are you really sure? Yes, I’m completely sure. Yes, I can see that you really want to follow me to where I’m leading you. I’d like to ask you a question. Alright, I’m listening. How much time have you spent trying to figure out your future direction? Quite a bit. I’ve mulled it over and thought about it from every angle. Has that helped you a great deal? Not really. Why not? The choices before me all have a fairly even set of pros and cons to them. So, one choice has not emerged as the clear winner. Yes, that’s true. But, you’re pretty sure that one is superior and you can’t tell which one, is that true? Yes, it is. Do you feel like you don’t have enough information? That’s exactly how I feel. I have one final question. I’m pretty sure I know what it is. Then tell me what you think my question is going to be. I think you want to ask me how much time have I spent talking to you about this decision. Yes, that was my question. What’s your answer? My answer is not enough. I’ve spent for too much time worrying and mulling over my decision and too little time talking to you about it. I’m glad that you have seen this. Do you want to talk to me now about your decisions? Yes, I do. Can you see how allowing yourself to be guided by me is how you will allow me to be the Lord of your life? Yes, I can. You are my Lord and Savior. Guide and direct my life according to your purposes and plans.
Lord, the things of this world have had a grip on me. I’ve always wanted the latest and greatest next big and best thing. No longer. I know that loving, following and serving you is the desire of my heart. There is nothing else. There is nothing better than you. Amen
