Come After Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Luke 9:23-25 - Come After Me- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Luke 9:23-25 – Come After Me- Growing As Disciples

Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?  Luke 9:23-25 (NIV)

Deny Myself

What do you want? Your entire life will be guided by how you answer that one question. All that you think, say and do will be directed by what you want. There are really only two answers to my question. How could there be only two answers to your question. Oh, I’m absolutely sure that you already know the two answers to my question. If you’re positive then I must have the answers. That’s right.

I will start with my answer. I want you. I know that you want me. You love me. You came into this world to rescue me from a life without you. You died on the cross so that I could be forgiven of all my sins and cleansed of all my righteousness. You pursued me when I was walking on a path away from you. You turned my life around. I told you that I would turn away from my sin so I could follow you. What do you mean by saying that you want me? I want to know you. I want to love you. I want to serve you. My life is in your hands. I am at your service. I will go where you guide me. I will do all that you ask of me. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. I will deny myself and take up the cross and follow you. How often will you deny yourself and take up the cross and follow me. I will deny myself and take up the cross to follow you everyday from now and until I meet you face to face. That will be very good. What is the other answer to my question?

The other answer to your question is not my answer. Let me hear the answer that you have rejected. There are two answers. There are only two choices. I can live my life with and for you or I can live my life for all that the world has to offer. I can lose my life for you by going and doing whatever you ask of me or I can lose my life by pursuing all that the world has to offer. Pursuing the world and all it has to offer is a tragic mistake. Yes, It is. Pursuing the world and all it has to offer leads to death now and forever. Yes, it does. Choosing to deny myself, take up my cross and follow you leads to life now and forever. Yes, it does. I am choosing to live the life that you have called me to live. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for drawing me to you. I am coming after you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will deny myself and take up the cross, as I love, follow, and serve you. It is my joy to lose myself in your service. I am all yours. Amen

Obey Your Instructions

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- Therefore - Psalm 119:55-56 - Obey Your Instructions - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Therefore – Psalm 119:55-56 – Obey Your Instructions – Growing As Disciples

I reflect at night on who you are, O LORD; therefore, I obey your instructions. This is how I spend my life: obeying your commandments. Psalm 119:55-56 (NLT)

Reflection

Set apart a place to come to meet with me. Set apart a time to come to know me. Reflect on who I am. Consider all that I have done. In my presence, I will change your heart. In my presence, I will transform your mind. It will become the desire of your heart to follow my instructions.  It will become the thought of your mind to obey my commands. As you come to know and love me you will want to live your life for me. I will change your thoughts and words and deeds. You will know my will. You will walk in my ways. You will fulfill my plans. You will accomplish my purposes. You will do what I have prepared for you to do. You will spend your life serving me. This is what I want. This is more than I could have hoped. This is more than I could have dreamed. This is more than I could have asked for or imagined.

I will set apart a time and a place to meet with you. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. There is nothing I would rather do than hear from you. I will leave the noise and busyness of life so that I can hear from you. I will humble myself before you so that I can receive all that you have to say to me. I will open myself up to you so that I can accept all that you want to give to me. I will reflect on who you are. I will consider all that you have done. I will let you change my heart. I will allow you to transform my mind. I will welcome you to mold and shape my life. Make me into the person that you want me to be. Use me however you see fit. I want to know and do your will. I want to love you just as you love me. I want to follow you to where you lead me. I want to do all that you ask of me. I am all yours. I am at your service. I am at your disposal. I will spend my life in your service. I will speak to you. I will change you. I will use you. You will bear fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name.

Lord, it is the joy of my life to come to meet with you. It is the passion of my heart to come to know and love you. Knowing and loving you has motivated my desire to follow your instructions and obey every one of your commands. I will spend my life serving you. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Psalm 119:165 – Great Peace – Growing As Disciples

Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.  Psalm 119:165 (NIV)

Your Word

I love your word. I love listening to all that you have to say to me. Your word guides my life. Your word gives me great peace. Your word keeps me from stumbling. You are using your word to change my heart. You are using your word to transform my mind. Your word has helped me to think your thoughts. Your word has helped me to walk in your ways. Without your word I would not know you. You have revealed yourself to me by your word.

Your word strengthens me. Your word is my delight. I want to meditate on your word. I want your word to dwell in me richly. I want to feast on your word. I want to rest in your word. I want to be revived, refreshed and restored by your word. I want to be taught and trained by your word. I want to be molded and shape by your word. I want to live my life according to everyone one of your words.

Your word is making me usable in your service. Your word is helping me to bear fruit for your kingdom. Your word is helping me to bring glory to your name. Your word is helping me to shine brightly as your witness in the world. I will remain in your word. Apart from your word I can do nothing. Your word guides me to where you want to me to go. Your word gives me what you want me to do for you.

I will follow and obey your word. I will set aside my thoughts for your thoughts. I will set aside my ways for your ways. I will humbly come to meet with you in your word. I will be still before you. I will open my heart and mind to all that you have for me. I will not run ahead of your word. I will not turn to the left or the right of your word. I will not lag behind your word.

I will hold on to your word. Your word is strong. Your word is sure. You word gives me a level path. Your word helps me to walk on solid ground. Your word lifts me up out of the muck and the mire. Your word keeps my feet from slipping. Your word fills me with peace as I listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. Help me to live my life according to your word. Yes, I will.

Lord, I love your word. You teach me and guide my life by your word. As I rely on your word you give me peace and stability. I know that you are with me. You are leading me along life’s path. I will live in peace and stability by following and obeying your word. Amen

Hears The Word And Understands

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Matthew 13:23 - Hears The Word And Understands - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Matthew 13:23 – Hears The Word And Understands – Growing As Disciples

But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Matthew 13:23 (NIV)

Hear And Understand

Do you want to live a life that bears fruit for my kingdom? Do you want to live a life that brings glory to my name? Yes, I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. What must I do if I want to bear fruit for kingdom and bring glory to your name? That is a great question. You must do two things if you want to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. You have my full attention. I will be listening very carefully to your every word. That’s very good. Then, you have already answered your own question. What’s that? I have no idea what you mean. What did I say that answered my own question? You said that I had your full attention. Yes, I did. You also said that you would listen carefully to every one of my words. Yes, I said that as well. I still don’t understand.

If you want to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name you must hear and understand my words. As you hear and understand and put my words into practice you will bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Now, I get it. Now, I understand. That’s good.

How will you go about hearing, understanding and putting my words into practice? Can I first ask you a question? Go right ahead. You said I needed to two things to be able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I did. Hearing, understanding and putting your word into practice sounds like three things. Yes, it does. Let me ask you a question. Go right ahead. How will you and I both know if you have truly heard and understood my word? If I have truly heard and understood your word I will certainly put it into practice. Yes, you will. Now, I get it. Putting your word into practice is like the proof that I have truly heard and understood your word. Yes, it is. Now let’s go back to my first question. How will I go about hearing, understanding and putting your word into practice? Yes. Every day, I will meet with you in your word. I set a time and place when and where I can listen to all that you want to say to me. As I listen attentively, you will help me to understand. Yes, I will. As I hear and understand, you will help me to put your word into practice. Yes, I will. As I hear and understand and put your word into practice, I will bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, you will.

Lord, prepare my heart to hear and understand your word. Break up anything in me that is resistant to your word. I want to fully hear and understand and put your word into practice. Produce an abundant crop of fruit for your kingdom and glory through my life. Amen

Every Good Path

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Guidance - Proverbs 2:6-9 - Every Good Path - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Guidance – Proverbs 2:6-9 – Every Good Path – Growing As Disciples

For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair–every good path. Proverbs 2:6-9 (NIV)

Guard And Guide

Do you want what I want to give to you? What do you want to give to me? I will give you wisdom. I will give you knowledge and understanding. Yes, I desperately want your wisdom, knowledge and understanding. What must I do if I want to receive your wisdom, knowledge and understanding? You have already taken your first step toward receiving what I want to give to you. I’m not sure what you mean. You must want my wisdom, knowledge and understanding. The key word in your first step is “wanting”. You didn’t say that you were interested in my wisdom, knowledge and understanding. You didn’t say that you were curious about my wisdom, knowledge and understanding. You didn’t indicate that you would give my wisdom, knowledge and understanding your strong consideration. You did not say that you may or may not follow my wisdom, knowledge and understanding. No, I did not. You have expressed a strong desire to receive what I want to give you. You said you were desperate to receive my wisdom, knowledge and understanding. That’s right, I did. That’s your first step to receiving what I want to give to you. What are my next steps?

What will you do because you desperately want my wisdom, knowledge and understanding? I will regularly ask for your wisdom, knowledge and understanding. That’s right. How often will you ask for my wisdom, knowledge and understanding? I will ask you for it everyday. I will ask you multiple times in every day. I will continually rely on you to give me your wisdom, knowledge and understanding. That’s a good second step. What will you do with my wisdom, knowledge and understanding once you have received it from me? I will put your wisdom, knowledge and understanding into practice in my daily life. That’s very good. If you want my wisdom, knowledge and understanding and ask for it and put it into practice then you will really be receiving all that I want to give you. You can count on that.

What will my wisdom, knowledge and understanding do for you? Your wisdom, knowledge and understanding will guard and guide my life. It will be a shield that protects my life. It will help me to walk according to your will and your ways. It will lead me on the path of life as I follow and serve you. It will help me to know and do your will. It will lead me in victory. Yes, it will.

Lord, open my ears to hear your words of wisdom, knowledge and understanding so that I will walk uprightly, blamelessly, justly and faithfully with you. Guard and guide my life on the path that you have laid out for me. Amen

If Anyone Wants To Be First

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Mark 9:33-37 - If Anyone Wants To Be First- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Mark 9:33-37 – If Anyone Wants To Be First- Growing As Disciples

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”  Mark 9:33-37 (NIV)

Servant Of All

Do you want me to do great things in and through your life? I’m glad that you did ask me if I wanted to be great. Why is that? The desire to be great seems so prideful, selfish and sinful. Say more. I don’t want greatness for myself to be a driver in my life. In answer to your question, I do want you to do great things in and through my life. I don’t want to be a failure that’s for sure. I don’t care if I ever receive recognition from others for what I have done. It won’t bother me one bit if my efforts go unnoticed. I doubt that. Let me clarify. I do want you to notice my efforts. Why is that? I want to do what pleases you. I want my life to be well used for your kingdom. I do want to bring glory to your name. I do want you to be noticed. I want others to be drawn to you through the work that you have given me to do for you. So you are right. I don’t want my efforts to go unnoticed. I won’t mind if I go unnoticed. I can believe that. We both know why that is true. Yes, we do. Tell me what you know. Whatever I do for you, no matter how small, will be noticed by you. Yes, that is right. That is why I will never need to give receiving credit, for something I have done, a second of thought. That is also right.

So, what attitude will carry through life as you follow me? I will be your servant. You will be my role model. I want to become like you. I want to give like you gave. I want to serve like you served. I want to live like you lived. I will go out of my way to serve others. I will look out for the interests of others. I will think about what others need. I will have a willing heart and open hand to meet the needs of those around me. I will allow you to use me however you desire. That will be very good.

Lord, I do want you to do great things in and through my life. Not for my own praise, honor and glory. I want to be used by you. Help me to use all you have given me to serve others. I want to become, a servant of all, for you. Amen

Still – Know

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Psalm 46:10 - Still - Know - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Psalm 46:10 – Still – Know – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Come To Me

It’s time to slow down. Take a time out. Come to me. Rest in my presence. Be quiet and still before me. You have had places to go. You have had things to do. You have let the busyness and noise of the world crowd me out of your life. You are dry and weary. You are hungry and thirsty. Return to me. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. I will refresh you. I will revive you. I will restore your soul. Take a deep breath. Relax and rest in my presence. I will feed your hunger. I will satisfy your thirst.

I have heard your call. Forgive me for my distance. Forgive me for my independence. I have wandered away from you. I pursued the world and all that it has to offer. I have been overtaken by the noise and busyness of life. I have let myself become dry and weary. My life has become barren. I have accomplished a lot of nothing as I have pursued my own purposes and plans. I want you and the life you have for me. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than meet with you. That sounds very good.

I see your desire. I know your intentions. I hear your words. Do you have a plan? When will you set a time to meet with me? Where will you set apart as a place to meet with me? I know why you are asking me these questions. My desire and intentions and words are not enough. I have had good desires, great intentions and words of commitment to meet with you. I have not followed through. I have been distracted. I have been diverted. Something else has always grabbed my time and intention. Forgive me for that. I regret that I have done what was urgent and failed to do what was important. No more. Not now. Not ever again. I will set a time and a place to meet with you. That will be very good.

Why do you want to meet with me? Why will you set a time and a place to meet with me? Be very clear in your heart and mind about these questions and your answers. Don’t lightly consider them. Don’t easily pass over them. Your answers will determine the course of your life. You are my Savior and Lord. I want to know you. I want to love you. I want to serve you. I want to live my life entirely for you. In every way I want to do what pleases you. I want my life to be act of worship. I will bow myself down before you. I will come to listen to you. I will do whatever you ask of me. I want you to be lifted up and exalted by all that I think, say and do. I want to be your witness in the world. That is why I will come to you. That is very good.

Lord, my life has been filled with the noise and busyness of the world. I need to slow down and come to a full stop. Help me to rest in your presence. Help me to be still before you. Open up your word and speak to me so I can come to know you. Amen

Whatever You Do

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - Colossians 3:17 - Whatever You Do - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Colossians 3:17 – Whatever You Do – Growing As Disciples

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

Do It All

If you can’t think a thought for me don’t think it at all. If you can’t speak a word for me don’t speak it at all. If you can’t do a deed for me don’t do it at all. You want me to think thoughts, speak words, and do deeds that come from you. That’s right. That sounds a lot easier than is the case. You’re also right about that. You can’t think my thoughts, speak my words or do my deeds without my help. If you rely on yourself you will only be thinking your thoughts, speaking your words and doing your deeds. In that case I will not be in your thoughts, words, and deeds. I want you to be in all my thoughts, words, and deeds. That is a very good desire that you have in your heart and on your mind.

How can you help me to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds? That is a very good question. You must first put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature. What belongs to my earthly nature? I’m sure that you have a good idea of what belongs to your earthly nature. When you gave your life to me you confessed all your sins to me. Yes, I did. All your sins were from your earthly nature. You turned away from them and started following me as your Savior and Lord. Yes, I did. Your sins and your past sinful life is your sinful nature. Your old sinful nature was put to death on the cross. Yes, it was. You threw away your old nature like a set of old filthy, stinky clothes. Yes, I did. Don’t ever let yourself try on those old filthy, stinky clothes again. I won’t. That’s good. Then let my word dwell in you richly. Meditate on my word day and day. Feast on my word. My word will change your heart and transform your mind. As you keep on letting my word dwell in you richly you will begin to think my thoughts, speak my words and do my deeds. As you think my thoughts, speak my words and do my deeds you will be putting on the new life that I have called you to live. Your old thoughts, words and deeds will be gone. Your old sinful nature and its practices will be dead and gone and a thing of the past. You will be filled with joy and thanksgiving because I will have made you able to live a life that is pleasing to me. That is what I want with all my heart and mind and soul and strength.

Lord, thank you that you are changing my heart and transforming my mind. You are helping me to serve you in all that I think, say and do. I want my entire life to honor and glorify you. Thank you for using me as your servant. Amen

Look Directly Forward

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Will -Proverbs 4:25-27 - Look Directly Forward - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Will -Proverbs 4:25-27 – Look Directly Forward – Growing As Disciples

Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil. Proverbs 4:25-27 (ESV)

Focused On You

I will keep my eyes focused on you. I will keep on moving forward with you. I will not look back. I will not swerve to the left or the right. I will not run ahead of you. I will not lag behind you. I will keep in step with you. I will follow you to wherever you lead me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I will not allow myself to become distracted. I will not allow myself to be diverted. I will not allow myself to become dissipated. I will follow you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will not retreat. I will have no regrets.  I will hold nothing in reserve. I will pursue you and the life you have for me with all that is within me. That will be very good.

What makes you so sure? Why are you so filled with passion? What spurs you on to want to follow me with all that is within you? I have nothing I would rather do. There is no place I would rather go. You have given me a new life to life. You have given my life hope and meaning and purpose. You have shown your kindness. You have allowed me to taste your goodness. You have richly blessed my life. You have lavished me with your love. I now love you because you first loved me. I am not following and serving you because I should or must. I am following and serving you because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. That is very good.

How will you stay with me on the path of life? How will you keep on following me? What will prevent you from swerving to the left or right? How will you be sure to keep in step with me? How will you know for sure that you will not run ahead or lag behind me? My heart and mind and life will remain focused on you. I will meet with you in your word. You will have my complete attention. I will draw near to you as you draw near to me. I will hold on to you as you hold on to me. My focus will remain completely on you. I will listen to all that you want to say to me. I will follow and obey you. I will trust you with every step I will take in life. I will rely on you rather than on myself. My life will be in your hands. That will be very good.

Lord, I will carefully consider my steps along the path of life. I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. I will not swerve to the right or left. I will keep on walking straight ahead with you. I will follow you to where you lead me to do all you ask of me. Amen

I have been proud. I have thought that I did not need wise counsel. I have made plans without seeking your advice. I have not listened well. I have not heard all that you had to say to me. I have not heeded your warnings. I have raced headlong to implement my own plans. I have wanted to achieve my own purposes and fulfill my own goals. I have experienced failure. I have suffered loss. I have gone through painful experiences because I thought I knew it all. What mistakes I have made. What missteps I have taken. Oh, how I have wasted time and expended energy going in the wrong direction to do what was not your will or plan for my life. All has not been wasted. All is not lost. I have used your mistakes and missteps. Your painful experiences have taught you valuable lessons. You have been humbled by your own pride. Was there any other way for you to learn? Hasn’t it been important for you to see the error of your own ways? In your pain and suffering you have cried out to me. You are now ready and willing to ask for my help. I have your attention. You are willing and able to listen to my voice. You are seeking my guidance. You want my plan. You want to fulfill my purposes. Yes, I want your plan. Yes, I want to fulfill your purposes. It is true, you do have my attention. My eyes and ears are focused on you. I am watching and waiting for your guidance. I welcome your instruction. I want your advice. I will go no further. I will not take another step without your wisdom and counsel guiding my life. That is very good.

How do you think I will speak to you? How will I give you my wise counsel? How will you receive my advice? I know that you will speak to me through your word. I know that your Holy Spirit will take your word and apply it directly to my life. That’s right. How else? You will bring wise counselors into my life. You give me people to see what I cannot see. You will use others to help me to know what I do not know. You will speak to me in and through the circumstances of my life. That is also true. What do you most need in order to hear from me? I will need humility. I will need to continually remember that I desperately need wise counsel. I cannot get along without your advice. What will humility cause you to do? Humility will cause me to listen. Humility will cause me to seek wise counsel and accept advice. Will you listen carefully to my wise counsel? Will you accept my advice? Yes, Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I know that I do not know it all. I have blind spots. There are things that I do not see or understand. Instead of rushing ahead with my own plans I will seek your counsel and that of trusted advisors you have placed in my life. Amen
