Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Psalm 119:18 – Open My Eyes – Growing As Disciples

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. Psalm 119:18 (NIV)

Show You

Do you want to be able to see what I want to show you in my word? Yes, I want to see everything that you want to show me in your word. What must I do if I want to be able to see all that you want to show me in your word? That is a very good question that I am going to let you answer for yourself. You think I can answer that question? I know that you can answer that question. I will try. Go ahead. In order to see all that you want to show me in your word I must want that with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. What do you mean by that? First, I must ask you to show me all that you want me to see in your word. This wanting will not become a one and done prayer of mine. I will continually and passionately pray asking you to open my eyes to see all that you want me to see in your word. This will be the fervent prayer of my heart. My continual and passionate wanting to hear and see all that want to show me from your word will require a significant effort and a strong ongoing commitment on my part. Yes, it will. I must be willing to set aside a regular time and place to consistently meet with you in your word. I must be willing to think deeply about your word. That will often require me to meditate on and memorize your word. In this way I can hide your word in my heart and store it in my mind. Yes, you can. If I only lightly skim over your word it will have far less of impact on my heart and in my mind. Most of what I only skim over will go in one ear and out the other. I won’t be able to hear what you want me to hear. I won’t be able to see what you want me to see. I won’t be able to know your thoughts or walk in your ways without knowing, following and obeying your word. So, I must spend unrushed quality time with you in your word in order to see all the wonderful things you want to show me from your word. That’s right. Will you meet with me in my word? Will you earnestly desire to hear and see all that I want to show you? Will you ask me to open your eyes to see and ears to hear all the wonderful things in my word? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, as I read your word I need you to open my eyes so that I will be able to see all that you want to show me. My own thoughts or ideas will never be enough. I will miss what you want me to see. So, I’m asking you to “open me eyes.” Amen
