Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – 1 John 2:3-6- Come To Know Him – Growing As Disciples

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6 (NIV) 

Know Me  

There is a way that you can know for certain if you are coming to know me. How so? You tell me. If I obey you then I can know for certain that I am coming to know you. That’s right. What has happened to you as you have come to know me? As I have come to know you I have come to love you. What has happened to you as you have come to love me? As I have come to love you I have wanted to follow, obey and serve you. Do you remember when it was a battle for you to decide to obey me? You had your own thoughts. You had your own will. You had your own ways. There were many times when you were more interested in doing your own thing than you were in following, obeying and serving me. That’s true. That’s all changed. Yes, that’s all changed. What do you want to do now? In the past I almost dreaded hearing what you might ask me to do for you. Now, I am listening attentively to you. Now, I am looking for ways that I can go and do what pleases you. Knowing and loving you now motivates me to do whatever you ask of me. Now, it is my joy and pleasure to serve you. I can see that in you. It gives me great joy to see that you want to come to know and love me everyday as you follow, obey and serve me. I’m so glad to hear that.

There is something that I want to ask of you. What’s that? I want you to make me to be like your Son. I want to love like He loved. I want to give like He gave. I want to do what He did. I want to walk like He walked and live like He lived. Then we both want the very same thing. Do you know why you have these desires in your heart? Tell me. You are coming to know and love me. Love for me is at work in your heart. Let that work in me continue. My work will continue in you until the day that we meet each other face to face. That’s great. That’s all I want. That’s more than I could have ever hoped for and dreamed of. I’m glad to hear that from you.

Heavenly Father, it is my desire to know and love you with all my heart, mind, soul and strength. Knowing and loving you has made it my joy and pleasure to follow and serve you. I will obey whatever you ask of me. Help me to walk just like your Son walked. Amen
