Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Discipleship – Luke 5:8-11 – Fishing For People – Growing As Disciples

When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m too much of a sinner to be around you.” For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed. Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus. Luke 5:8-11 (NLT)

Fishing

You got my attention. You arranged circumstances so that I could come to you. You let me know that I could cry out to you for help. You must have been pursuing me. You must have been calling my name. That’s right. I was too busy to listen. I was too distracted to hear. But, you brought me to a full stop. I could go no further. I said, “enough”. I did cry out to you. It might be more accurate to say that I shouted to you. I demanded that you show yourself to me, if you were real. I didn’t shout with pride. I didn’t shout with arrogance. I shouted with desperation. I wanted and needed you. I had nowhere to turn. I had nothing to lose. I had nowhere to go. I was broken. I was humbled. I was ready to admit the obvious. What was obvious? I was a sinner. I was being paid the natural consequences or wages, as you call them, of living my broken and sinful life. I wanted out of my old life. I didn’t know what you had to offer. I only knew that I wanted you and your forgiveness. I didn’t know that you would give me a new life. I didn’t know that I would have a second chance. I didn’t know that you would welcome me with your open arms. I didn’t know that you would give my life purpose and meaning and hope and joy. Most of all, I didn’t know that you would lavish me with your love. You allowed me to taste your kindness, mercy and love. Yes, I did.

Now everything is different. How so? You are leading me through life. You are guiding me to where you want me to go. You are giving me what you want me to do. What’s that? You want to use me to fish for people. You want to use me to catch people for your kingdom. You want others to be drawn to you, just like I was drawn to you. You want others to come to know, love and follow you, just as I have come to know, love and follow you. Yes, I do. Will you allow yourself to be used by me? Will you become a fisher of women and men? Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, I have left my old life behind so I can follow you. I will go where you guide me and do what you ask of me. Use my life to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Help me to catch people so they will also come to know, love and follow you. Amen
