Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Titus 2:11-14 – To Say No – Growing As Disciples

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus 2:11-14 (NIV)

Yes And No

You have said yes to me. You have asked me to come into your life. You have asked me to be your Savior and Lord. You have told me that you have had enough of your old life. You no longer want to live according to the patterns, values and practices of the world. You have told me that you want to leave your old life of sin behind you. You have said that you want to live a completely new life in me. Do I have this correct? Is what I am saying true? Yes, I want to live a completely new life in you. You are my Savior and Lord. I no longer want my life to conform to the world. I want to live the new life that you have called me to live with and for you. That is very good.

Your decision to follow me was a one-time decision that will be followed up with many affirmations. You will live a life of continually saying yes to me and no to the world. These affirmations will come moment-by-moment and day-by-day. You will be tested and challenged and tried in and through the circumstances of life. You will be asked again and again if you will continue to leave the world behind you. You will be asked over and over if you will continue to love, follow and serve me.  You will be asked to live an upright and godly life that will shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world. You will not be alone in answering these questions. I will be with you to help you. I will continue to teach you to say “no” to ungodliness as you continue to say “yes” to me.

I have redeemed your life.  I have forgiven you of your sins. I have cleansed you of your unrighteousness. You are mine.  I will teach you. I will train you. I will change your heart. I will transform your mind. I will mold and shape your life. Don’t grow weary. Don’t become faint. Keep your heart and mind and life on me. I will sustain you. I will strengthen you. Will you be eager to go where I guide you? Will you be eager to do what I ask of you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for your grace that made salvation available to me. You have taught me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions while saying “yes” to living the life you called me to live. I eagerly await the day of your return and final redemption. Amen
