Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Mark 4:39-41 – Miracles – Who Is This? – Growing As Disciples

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” Mark 4:39-41 (NIV)

Be Still

You are not alone. I have not left you to face storms in life all by yourself. I have seen the look of terror in your eyes as you have gone through worrisome storms. I have heard your fearful thoughts of wonder at how you might survive a fiery trial you are facing. You may have thought you were all alone and on your own. That would be a false thought. That would be a lie. The truth is that I am with you to help you through every trial and storm in life. Do you hear and believe what I am saying to you? Yes, Lord, I believe that you are with me to help me through all the trials and storms of life.

Let’s talk some more about the trials and storms of life. I’m listening. I want you to change the way you look at storms. I want you to think differently about the trials. How so? What have you focused on during a trial or storm in life? Every trial and storm I have faced in life has grabbed my full attention. During trials and storms of life I have thought of nothing else other than how I might endure a trail or weather a storm. I have tried to gather all my resources and strengths and abilities to go through trials and navigate storms. In other words, you have relied almost exclusively on yourself as you have gone through the trials and storms of life. Yes, I suppose that’s true. You suppose? No, I’m sure that I have relied on myself as I have gone through trials and storms in life. That’s right. What has happened to you as you have relied on yourself? My fear and anxiety has grown as I have tried to endure trials and navigate through storms in life. Why is that? I have known that I didn’t have enough resources, strengths and abilities to endure my trials or weather my storms. I desperately needed help. I needed your help. Yes, you did. Have I been with you to help you through the trials and storms of life? Yes, you have been with me to help me. Have I calmed your storms? Have I helped you through your trials? Yes, you have been with me to help me through every storm and trial. That’s right. Can you imagine how I want you to think and act differently in your trails and storms of life? You want me to trust in you. You want me to rely on you. You want me to have faith in you. Yes, I do. You will fill me with your peace as I trust you through the trials. You will grow my faith as I rely on you in the storms of life. Yes, I will.

Lord, I know that I will go through storms and trials in life. I already have. I know that more will come my way. Help me to grow in faith and receive all the wisdom and strength I will need to weather every storm with you. Amen
