Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (NIV)
You want me to comfort others, is that right? Yes, that is true. That will be very difficult. Why do you say that? I need comfort. I feel bruised and battered and broken. I feel like I’m under attack. It seems like I’m surrounded and under siege. Have I not comforted you? Am I not with you right now? You are not alone. I am with you to help you. I have healed you. I have helped you. I have given the strength to stand in all the adversity you have gone through. I will make you able to keep on following me through whatever troubles lie ahead. You have hope. You have a future. My hand is on you. I am using you. I am working in and through your life. My favor rests on you. Is this not enough for you? Am I not enough for you? Yes, you are enough for me. Yes, you have done enough for me. Yes, I am thankful for how you have been with me to help me through every trouble and trial in life. That’s good.
Let’s clear things up a little bit. How so? You are not surrounded and under siege. You are not under attack. Yes, you are experiencing difficulty. Yes, you need my help. But, there is no point in becoming overly dramatic. You will only discourage and depress yourself if you turn inward and focus solely on your current difficulties. What should I do? Come to me. Rely on me. Ask for my help. Take refuge in me. I will do that. That will be a very good start.
A start? Is there something else or more you want me to be doing? Yes, there is more that I want you to be doing. I want you to take your eyes off of yourself. I want to you focus your attention on me. I get that. Now, I want you to remember how I have comforted you through every trouble and trial in life. Are you remembering? Yes Lord, I do remember how you have comforted me. I want you to comfort others with the same comfort with which I have comforted you. I want you to love others just as I have loved you. I want my love and comfort to flow through you to others. Will you allow me to use you to love and comfort others? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.
Heavenly Father, thank you for all the comfort that you have given to me through the troubles of life. You have sustained and strengthened me through difficulty. Help me to be a giver of comfort to others that are in trouble. Amen
