Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith- 1 John 5:3-5 – Overcome The World – Growing As Disciples

This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:3-5 (NIV)  

Not Burdensome 

What is not burdensome to you? It is not burdensome to do what you ask of me. It is not burdensome to obey your commands. It is not burdensome to do what is good and right and pleasing to you. Why is that true? I know that you love me. I know that you care for me. I know that you are with me to help me. I know that you are on my side. There is nothing you have not done, are not doing or will not do for me that doesn’t have your highest and best intentions for my life. You have your very best in mind for me. That’s right. You have a very good purpose and plan for my future. Yes, I do. So, I can take no credit for loving you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I love you because you first loved me. I am so thankful that you placed love for you in my heart. I only ask that you keep on fanning the flame of love I have for you. Help my love for you to burn white hot. Set me on fire to love and follow and serve you. That, I will certainly do for you. So, because I love you I am ever looking for ways to do what is pleasing to you. It is no burdensome drudgery to follow and obey you. It is the overpowering desire of my heart and mind to go wherever you guide me to do whatever you ask of me. I want to live my life completely with and for you. I have no greater hope and desire and purpose than to be used by you. I ask that your hand will guide me. I ask that your favor will rest on me so I can bear abundant fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is very good. So, because I love you I want my life to be in complete alignment with yours. I don’t want anything to come between us. I don’t want anything to hinder your ability to work in and through my life. With a heart filled with faith, I expect that you will give me everything I will need to overcome the trials and temptations and evil of this world. Use me according to your purposes. Fulfill your plans for my life. Yes, I will. You can count on it.

Father, thank you that loving you has made it my joy to obey all your commands. I want to do whatever is pleasing to you. What you ask of me is not a burdensome at all. Help me to have victory over all the trials and temptations and evil that is in this world. Amen
