Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Philippians 4:6-7 – Present Your Requests To God – Growing As Disciples

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

My Peace

Do you want to live in my peace? Do you want your life to be filled with peace that is far beyond your understanding? I’d like that quite a bit. Why do you say that? My life has not been filled with peace, far from it. Why is that? I have been a worrier. My life has been filled with anxiety. I have made a gigantic mistake. What’s that? I have held on to my own difficulties and troubles and trials. I have carried my own burdens. I have tried to solve my own problems. I have not asked you for help. I have not relied on you. I have not presented my requests to you. That’s not good. No, it’s not.

Do you believe that I will hear and answer your prayers? Do you believe that there is no request that is too small or too big for me to hear? Do you believe that it is my joy to have you come to rely on me for my help? Yes, I believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. Yes, I believe that no prayer of mine is too small or too big for you to hear. Yes, I believe that you have joy in my coming to rely on you. That’s good. Then why don’t you pray? Then why don’t you come to rely on me? Then why don’t you turn all your anxieties and worries into prayers to me? I have been proud. I have been stubborn. I have been independent. I have been self-reliant and self-sufficient. That has not worked out well for you. No, it hasn’t. All my pride and stubbornness and independence and self-reliance and self-sufficiency has filled my life with anxiety and worry. That’s not good. No, it’s not.

Is there something that you would like to do differently? I’m tired of being filled with anxiety and worry. I am worn out from carrying my own burdens. I want to turn all my worries and anxieties into prayers to you. I will set my burdens down. I will give you all my worries and anxieties and burdens. I will turn each one of them into a prayer to you. I will come to rely on you. With a thankful heart I will present all my requests to you. That will be very good. Then I will guard your heart and mind. Then you will live in my peace. That’s what I want. That is what you will have from me.

Lord, as you know, I have been a gifted worrier. I have held on to my anxiety. I have failed to turn all my worries into prayers to you. No more. I will present all my prayer requests to you. Thank you, that as I pray, you will guard my heart and mind in Christ. Amen
