Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 73 – Proverbs 3:5-8 – Trust In The Lord – Growing As Disciples

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8 (NIV)

Straight Path

I understand that you would like to walk a straight path. You don’t want to wander from one meaningless activity to another. You don’t want to misspend your life. You don’t want to waste your time, talent, energy and resources. You are tired of taking two steps forward and threes steps backward. You want your life to count for something of eternal value. You want to do what is good and right and pleasing to me. When we meet face to face you want to know that you have gone and done my will. On that day, you would like to hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Have I captured your thoughts? Is this what is in your heart and on your mind? You know me better than I know myself. Yes, all these thoughts are in my heart and on my mind. That is very good.

How would you say you have been doing so far? I have had mixed success. I have taken plenty of missteps. I have wasted a tremendous amount of time, talent, energy and resources. As you have said, I have often taken two steps forward and three steps backward. I have not walked a very straight path. Yes, at times, I have wandered from one meaningless activity to another. What do you think is the source of your problem? Pride is no doubt the source of my problem. I have proudly trusted in myself and foolishly relied on my own understanding. That’s not good. Yes, I know.

What would you like to do differently? I would like to place all my trust in you. I would like to rely fully on your understanding. I would like to set aside my pride and admit that I desperately need your help. To do anything else or less would be a form of evil. That is what I want to quickly run from. Are you prepared to follow me? Will you go where I guide you? Will you do what I ask of you? Yes, I will follow you. Yes, I will go where you guide me to do what you ask of me. Then you will have all that you want from me. You will be able to live the life that I am calling you to live. You will walk on the path of life with me. You will live a faithful and fruitful life before me. That is the prayer of my heart and desire of my life. Follow me. Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, I will trust you with all my heart. I will not rely on my own understanding. I will acknowledge you in all that I think, say and do. I will not think I am wise. I will quickly shun evil. Help me to follow you on the straight path of life that you have laid out for me. Amen
