Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 225 – Matthew 20:32-34 – What Do You Want? – Growing As Disciples

When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!”  Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him. Matthew 20:32-34 (NLT)

Want And Need

Ask you what? What do you want and need from me? What can I do for you? Just like that, I can ask you for what I want and need? You will hear and answer my prayers? Yes, I will hear and answer your prayers. Yes, you can make your wants and needs known to me. Really? Yes, really. Would it surprise you to know that you often have not, because you ask not? That wouldn’t surprise me at all. Why is that? I am sure that you have wanted me to come to ask you for what I want and need. For some reason, unknown to me, I have seldom made my wants and needs known to you. Yes, I know. But that is about to change. How so? I will make it my daily practice to bring my wants and needs to you. That will be very good. Do you think that I will hear and answer every prayer that you pray? Well, no, I am sure that I have prayed plenty of prayers that were not according to your purpose and plan or will for my life. I can think of some very misguided and unwise prayers that I have prayed over time. I reflect with gratitude that you have not answered every prayer that I have prayed. You are somewhat mistaken on this point. How so? Many times, the best answer I could give your prayers was “no” or “net yet”. At other times, I have answered your prayers in ways that you could not have possibly hoped for, dreamed of, or even imagined. Sometimes, your prayers have been tested. How so? I have asked you to be persistent and passionate in your prayers. Sometimes, I have required you to ask in faith, over great lengths of time, for what you have wanted or needed. In this way, your faith and hope and trust in me has grown. In this way, you have come to rely on me more fully. Don’t I know that! That does remind me of my highest and best prayer. That brings to the front of my heart and mind what I want and need most from you. What’s that? I want to know and love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. If you were to do only one thing for me, this is what I would ask of you. You can be certain that I will do this in, for and through you. I will answer this prayer far beyond what you could ever ask for, dream of, or even imagine. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know I have not always brought my wants and needs to you. Why that is, I don’t know. That is going to change. I will bring all my wants and needs to you. I will make my prayers know to you. With faith, I will ask you for what I want and need from you. Amen
