Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 231 – Psalm 25-4-5 – The Right Path – Growing As Disciples

Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.  Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Psalm 25:4-5 (NLT)

Follow Me

Do you want to walk down the right path in life? Now that is a profound question. How will I know if I have or am, or will walk down the right path in life? How can I make sure that I have not wandered on to a path that is neither unhelpful nor unhealthy? How can I make sure that my life is not misspent? How can I make sure that I have not, am not, or will not invest my life in what will amount to nothing? How can I make sure that I will never live with regret over what I could have done or what I could have been? You have expanded on my question. You are asking yourself some very good questions. Do you have any answers to your questions? First, I will say that I do want to walk down the right path in life. I am certain that there is a right path for my life. I am equally certain that there are many wrong paths for my life. Let me hear you describe some of the wrong paths in life. That’s easy. At one time or another, I have walked on many of them. There is the path of self-reliance. On that path, I learned the foolishness of relying on myself for my own wisdom. On that path, I took many missteps as I wandered from one meaningless endeavor to another. How about another path? There is the path of self-indulgence. On that path, I lived a bruised and battered and broken life as I lived for my own comfort and pleasure. I acquired possessions and used people. Describe one more path. There is the self-centered path. This is the prideful path. On this path, I was the center of attention. Everything revolved around me, I was the subject of my adulation. Sounds creepy doesn’t it? Yes, it does.  Well, all these paths are unhelpful and unhealthy and lead to nowhere good. They all lead away from you. Yes, these paths do lead away from me.

But you do want to walk down the right path, of that I am sure. Yes, that’s correct. You have also discovered how to walk down the right path in life. Yes, I have. Tell me about that. You will lead down the right path in life. You will point out the way for me to walk. You will lead me. You will guide me. You will teach me. You have even given me your life as an example to follow. I will live as you lived. I will do what you did. I will put all my faith and hope and trust in you. Yes, I have done, and doing and will do all these things for you. Will you follow me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, at many times and in many ways, I have relied on myself. I have charted my own course. I have gone my own direction. I have wandered on painful paths that led away from you. No more! I will place all my faith and hope and trust in you. Guide my life. Amen
