Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – 1 John 2:3-6 – Obey – Walk – Growing As Disciples

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6 (NIV)

Every Step

I don’t obey you because I should. I don’t obey you because I must. Why then do you obey me? I obey you because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. It is no sacrifice for me to follow and obey you. Following and obeying you is what I want to do. It is my joy to hear and obey your commands. I want to know and do your will. Your love guides my desire. Your love sets my course. Your love guides me every day, one step at a time. I will follow you to where you lead me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I want to do what is pleasing to you. That is very good.

How will you know if you are walking in my ways? How will you know if you are doing what is pleasing to me? How will you know if you are becoming the person I want you to become? How will you know if you are living the life that I have called you to live? I have an example to follow. Yes, you do. I will walk as Jesus walked. I will do what Jesus did. I will think like Jesus thought. I will pray like Jesus prayed. I will give like Jesus gave. I will serve like Jesus served. I will follow and obey you like Jesus followed and obeyed you. Will I do this all perfectly? Not, a chance. Will I be able to live this kind of life on my own, with my own strength? No, not at all. I know that you will be working in my life. You will be molding me and shaping me into who you want me to become. Yes, I will. You will give me your power and strength so that I can do what you have given me to do for you. You can count on me. In every way and on every day, I will come to rely on you. You are my God and Father. My life is in your hands. I love you only because you loved me first. Your love drives me. Your love compels me. Your love spurs me on. You will make me able to follow and obey you. You will help me to walk as Jesus walked on every day with every step of my life. Yes, I will.

Father, I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. it is my passionate desire to come to know you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to do what is pleasing to you. I will follow and obey you. I will walk just as Jesus walked. Amen

Faith – Works

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - James 2:14-17 - Faith - Works - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – James 2:14-17 – Faith – Works – Growing As Disciples

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14-17 (ESV)

Into Action

I have blessed your life. I have given you many good things. You have not wanted. You have not lacked. You have had all that you need. Why do you think I have so richly blessed your life? What do you think I want to do with what I have given to you? I’m pretty sure that not all  you have given to me is meant for me. That’s a good thought. That’s a start. Tell me more of what is on your mind. I think you have blessed me so that I can be a blessing. You want me to freely give to others just as you have freely given to me. You want me to be generous with others just as you have been generous with me. You are a giver. You want me to become like you. You want me to become a giver. That’s right. You got it.

What will happen to you as you give like I gave? You will use me when I give like you gave. I will bear fruit for your kingdom. I will bring glory to your name. I will shine brightly for you in this world. My faith will be on display. All my thoughts and words of faith will be tested and found to be true as I put them into action by giving like you gave. As I share with others from what you have given to me my faith will grow vibrant and strong because I will know that you are using me. You are working in and through me when I help others in need. Yes, I am.

How will you know when I want to use you? How will you know when and where and how to give? I will keep my eyes and ears open. I will watch and listen for opportunities to serve you by serving others. No longer will I walk right on by those who are in need. I will be your hands. I will be your feet. I will go where you guide me. I will do all that you ask of me. I will let you make my faith real as you put me into action in your service. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for my faith in you. You are my Savior and Lord. It is my joy to serve you. My eyes and ears are looking and listening for opportunities to serve you. Help me to do good works that will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen
