Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 192 – Psalm 119:129-135 – Pant With Expectation – Growing As Disciples

Your laws are wonderful. No wonder I obey them!  The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.  I pant with expectation, longing for your commands.  Come and show me your mercy, as you do for all who love your name.  Guide my steps by your word, so I will not be overcome by evil.  Ransom me from the oppression of evil people; then I can obey your commandments.  Look upon me with love; teach me your decrees.  Rivers of tears gush from my eyes because people disobey your instructions. Psalm 119:129-136 (NLT)

Expectation

What is your expectation? What is your great hope? Normally, I would ask you to be more specific. Oftentimes, I would ask you to clarify the nature of your questions. But what you are asking is not hidden to me. There is no mystery in what you are asking of me. So, I will jump right in and start answering your questions. I will start with your second question. I thought you might. In my opinion there is nowhere else to begin. My hope is in you. You are my God and King. You are my Savior and Lord.  You are my Father. I am your child. So, I will place all my faith and hope and trust in you. To place my hope in anyone or anything other than you would be exceedingly foolish. You alone are my hope. Yes, I am.

Keep going, I’m sure that you have much more to say. Yes, I do have more to say. Because you are worthy of all my faith and hope and trust, I can rely on your word. Your promises are wonderful. How wonderful is my word? Your word takes my breath away. You word has me panting for more. I wait with great eagerness and anticipation and expectation for your word to be fulfilled in my life and in the world around me. Your word has even brought me to tears because it has both revealed your kindness and mercy and love to me, but also, how I and others in this life fall short in obeying you and your word. What has my word already been doing in and for you? Your word has and will continue to give me light. You have been helping me to understand what, on my own, I could not begin to understand. Your word has been and will continue to guide my steps through life. Your word has been molding and shaping my life. Your word has been making me into the person you want me to become. Your word has been making me able to resist temptation and fight against evil. Your word has been changing my heart and transforming my mind. Not one of my thoughts or words or actions have been left untouched by your word. I do know why you have given your word to me. Why is that? You have given me your word because you love me. That is true. That is right. That is certain. And I will follow and obey your word because I also love you with all that is within me. That is very good.

Lord, thank you for the wonderful promises in your word. The teaching of your word has guarded and guided my life. Your word has made me able to stand against temptation and fight against evil. I will pant with expectation the fulfillment of your word. Amen
