Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Discipleship – Romans 12:1-2 – Spiritual Act Of Worship – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)

Under Attack

Your life is under attack. Your heart and mind are under constant bombardment. How could that be true? How could my life be under attack or constant bombardment and I be completely unaware of it? That doesn’t seem possible. You live in the world. The world is constantly trying to conform to its values, patterns and practices. The world would like you to think and speak and act like everyone else in it. I don’t want that. That’s good.

Do you want to give yourself to me as a living sacrifice? Will you go where I guide you? Will you do what I ask of you? Will you live your life with and for me? Do you desire to know and do my will? Yes, I want all these things. You will never be able to live in my ways, if you allow your life to be conformed to the world. The world will take you where you do not want to go. The world will have you do what you do not want to do. The world will take you on a path that leads away from me. I don’t want that. That’s good.

How can I make sure that my life will not be conformed to the world? Let me ask you a few questions that I want you to think about. Go ahead, I’m listening. What worldly influences have you allowed in your life? What is trying to conform you to the values, patterns and practices of the world right now? What worldly influences can you eliminate from your life? What has come to your mind when I ask you these questions? You want me to eliminate from my life whatever comes to my mind when I think about these questions? Yes, I do. Whatever feeds worldly thoughts, words, or deeds in you, needs to be put on a starvation diet. That’s it? No, that’s not it, this is just the start of what I want you to do.

What else do you want me to do? You must feed on my word. You must let my word dwell in you richly. You must read my word, study my word, meditate on my word, memorize my word, pray my word, and put my word in practice. Take hold of my word so my word can take hold of you. My word will change your heart. My word will transform your mind. My word will make you able to think my thoughts. My word will make you able to give your life to me as a living sacrifice. You will be able to know and do my good, pleasing and perfect will. You will be able to live a holy life that is pleasing to me. That is what I want. That is very good.

Lord, my heart and mind and life are under constant bombardment from the world. I will not let myself be conformed to the world. Instead, I will allow you to use your word to transform and renew my mind so I can know and do your will as a living sacrifice. Amen
