I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions. You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope. Get out of my life, you evil-minded people, for I intend to obey the commands of my God. LORD, sustain me as you promised, that I may live! Do not let my hope be crushed. Sustain me, and I will be rescued; then I will meditate continually on your decrees. But you have rejected all who stray from your decrees. They are only fooling themselves. You skim off the wicked of the earth like scum; no wonder I love to obey your laws! I tremble in fear of you; I stand in awe of your regulations. Psalm 119:113-120 (NLT)
What is your source of hope? Where will you turn and what will give you hope when you find yourself in what appears to be a hopeless situation? Who will give you counsel? Where will you seek advice? How will you be sustained and strengthened and encouraged when you are in great difficulty? Do you have divided loyalties? Do you have a double mind? Are you trying to live your life with and for me while at the same time you are you following the ways of the world? What forms your thinking? What guides your speech? What directs your activities? That is a lot of questions. Take your time. I am anxious to hear your answers. Let me take one of the last questions first. Go ahead. I do not have a double mind. I have no interest in living according to the thoughts and opinions of this world. My thoughts and words and actions are guided by your word. I want to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to you. My only source of hope in this life is you and your word. It is foolish and unwise to turn to any other source of counsel and guidance than you. Yes, I do know that you will bring good and wise and godly people to speak into my life. I will listen to all counsel and instruction and advice that clearly comes from you. But first and foremost, when I am in a seemingly hopeless situation, filled with great difficulty, I will draw near to you. This will be my pattern and practice. I know that I can never go wrong by turning to you, waiting in your presence, meeting with you in your word. You will counsel me. You will watch over me. You will sustain and strengthen. You will fill my life with hope. Of that, I am sure. Of that, I have no doubt. I will hold on to you and your word. That will be very good. Then you will receive all the hope I want to give to you. Thank you, Lord.
Lord, help me to not be double-minded in my thinking, speaking and acting. I know I cannot live for you and the world. Both can never coexist. Give me a single-hearted devotion to you. Use your word to sustain and strengthen me as I love, follow and serve you. Amen
