Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 136 – 1 Kings 19:11-12 – Gentle Whisper – Growing As Disciples

The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:11-12 (NIV)

Hear From Me

Do you want to hear from me? Yes, of course, I want to hear from you. Then I will ask you a couple questions. I’m listening. That’s good. What will make you able to hear from me? What will you unable to hear from me? I will start with your second question first. I will be unable to hear from you if I don’t believe that you will speak to me. I will be unable to hear from you if I am making no attempt to listen to you. I will be unable to hear from you if I never quiet myself before you. Why is that? This life is noisy. This life is busy. This life is distracting. This life is all consuming. If I don’t set aside a time and place to quiet myself before you, it will be very difficult for me to hear from you. That is true. There is something else that I have learned. What is that? Being able to hear and recognize your voice is something that grows over time. How so? The more I quiet myself before you and the more I listen to you, the more I will hear your gentle whispers speaking to me. That is also true. I know a couple other points are true, without a doubt. Tell me about them. If I am unwilling to obey you, I will be unlikely to hear from you. Why would you speak to me if I am unwilling to listen to you? Good point. Not obeying you is a sin, which brings me to the next point. If I have unconfessed sin in my life, I am unlikely to hear from you. Why is that? Unconfessed sin will more likely make me want to run from you rather than draw near to you. You are wise to know that to be true.

Let me hear what will make you able to hear from me? A burning desire to hear from you will make me able to hear from you. I will certainly find you if I seek you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will certainly find you if I seek you with all that is within me. Yes, you will. A willingness to quiet myself before you will make me able to hear from you. A willingness to confess all my sins to you will make me able to hear from you. A commitment to set apart a daily time and place to meet with you will make me able to hear from you. Will you do all these things? Will you have this desire and this willingness in you? Yes, I will. That will be very good. Then you will hear from me.

Heavenly Father, I know life is busy. I know that life is noisy. I know that I am hard of hearing. So, I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you. I will quiet myself before you. I will listen carefully to you. I will hear your gentle whispers speaking to me. Amen
