Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 195- Psalm 119:153-160 – Take My Side – Growing As Disciples
Look upon my suffering and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instructions. Argue my case; take my side! Protect my life as you promised. The wicked are far from rescue, for they do not bother with your decrees. LORD, how great is your mercy; let me be revived by following your regulations. Many persecute and trouble me, yet I have not swerved from your laws. Seeing these traitors makes me sick at heart, because they care nothing for your word. See how I love your commandments, LORD. Give back my life because of your unfailing love. The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever. Psalm 119:153-160 (NLT)
Your Side
Whose side do you think I’m on? What kind of question is that? I’m not even sure what that question means. It is not a difficult question. Am I on your side? Can you come to me when you are in trouble? Can you rely on me to help you? Can you tell me whatever is in your heart and on your mind, without any fear? Do I love and care for you? Am I kind and merciful to you? Do I love and care for you? Do you want to draw near to me when you are in trouble? Do you believe that I will hear and answer your prayers? Will I reject you? Will I turn away from you? Will I leave you empty handed? Do you need to fend for yourself? Do you need to work your own way out of trouble that is certain to come your way in this life? I will ask you again, “Whose side do you think I’m on?” Am I on your side? Now, I understand your questions. That’s good.
I will answer your questions. It’s about time. You are on my side. You had some reluctance to answer that question. Yes, I did. Why is that? If I say that I believe that you are on my side that answer has some implications. Like what? If I believe that you are on my side, I will pour out my heart to you in prayer. I will never be reluctant to come to ask you for help when I am in trouble. I will never make relying on myself my first course of action. I will believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. I will believe that you will never turn away from me. You love and care for me. You are kind and merciful to me. You will never leave me empty handed. I can pour my heart out to you without any fear of being rejected. I don’t need to fend for myself. I need have no fear. No, you do not. What will you do? I will believe that you are on my side. You are always ready to help me. You will use your word to strengthen and encourage me when I am in trouble. I will draw near to you. I will live in an intimate relationship with you. I will walk through life with you. I will love you because I know that you love me. That will be very good. Yes, it will be. Thank you, Lord.
Lord, thank you for being on my side. I know I can call out to you in prayer when I am in trouble. You will hear and answer my prayers. You will use your word to strengthen and encourage me when I am in trouble. Thank you for all your goodness to me. Amen
