Hidden Your Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 59 – Psalm 119:9-16 – Hidden Your Word- Growing As Disciples

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:9-16 (NIV)

Hidden

That is what I have been doing with your word. What have you been doing with my word? I have hidden your word in my heart. How have you hidden my word in your heart? I have let your word dwell in me richly. I have read your word. I have meditated on your word. I have memorized your word. I have studied your word. I have prayed your word. I have even taught your word. Most importantly, I have taken hold of your word so that your word will take hold of me. That is very good.

How do you want my word to take hold of you? I want your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. I want your word to help me to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. I want your word to help me to know you. I want your word to help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want your word to help me resist temptation and stand against evil. I want your word to help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is very good.

How often do you feel a need to take hold of my word so my word will take hold of you? There is not a day that goes by that I don’t need to take hold of your word. Likewise, I need your word to take hold of me every day. So, what does that mean to you? That means that I will come to meet with you every day in your word. That is very good.

What has wanting to meet with me every day in my word required of you? I have needed to set apart a time and a place to meet with you. Why is that? That seems so formal. Wouldn’t it work to meet with me when a time and place opens up in your daily schedule? We both know the answer to that question. Yes, but I would still like to hear your answer. That approach never works. Time never opens up on my schedule. A quiet place never makes itself available to us either. A pattern and practice of meeting with you in your word will never randomly develop. Life is busy. Life is noisy. Life is chaotic. No, meeting daily with you in your word will not happen consistently if I don’t set an appointment with you. So, meeting with you in your word is on my every day schedule. So, a special time and sacred place has been set aside for us to meet together. That is very good. As meet together, my word will accomplish in and through all that you could hope for and far more than you could ever imagine. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will hide your word in my heart. I will memorize and meditate on your word. Use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. Use your word to help me resist temptation and stand against evil. I will allow you to use your word to guide my life. Amen

How Can A Young Man Keep His Way Pure

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 330 - Psalm 119-9-11 - How Can A Young Man Keep His Way Pure - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 330 – Psalm 119-9-11 – How Can A Young Man Keep His Way Pure – Growing As Disciples

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  Psalm 119:9-11 (NIV)

 In My Heart

Do you believe that this is true? What’s that? Do you believe that hiding my word in your heart will help you to not sin against me? Yes, I do. What makes you so certain? First, before I answer that question, I want to clarify something. Go right ahead. I know that I have sinned and that I will sin again.  I also want to say that I know that I have forgiveness for all my sins in the past, present and future because of what your Son, Jesus Christ did for me on the cross. He made it so that I could be forgiven of all sins and cleansed of all my unrighteousness. Yes, that’s exactly what He did for you. I have not, nor can I ever, earn my salvation. No, you cannot because your salvation has already been given to you as a gift.  You received your gift of salvation on the day that you came to believe in my Son and follow Him as your Savior and Lord. Yes, and for that I am eternally grateful.  So now, I will attempt to answer your question. Go right ahead. Hiding your word in my heart and mind has to do with being able to live the life that you have called me to live. Yes, it does. Hiding your word in my heart is really about living as a disciple or follower of Christ. Say more about that. Your Son hid your word in His heart. Yes, He did. As a follower of Christ I want to do what He did. I want to become like your Son, Jesus Christ. He has set for me an example to follow. Yes, He has done that for you. Because He hid your word in His heart and mind He was able to stand against temptation. Yes, He was. He used your word to stand against the attacks of the Devil. Yes, He did. Just as your word worked in, for, and through Him, so also your word will work in, for, and me. Yes, it will. That is why I am so certain that hiding your word in my heart and mind will help me to not sin against you. Good answer.

How have you been hiding my word in your heart? I have been meditating on and memorizing your word day and night. I have been reading and studying your word. I have been applying your word to my life. As we meet together in your word I have been making your word the subject of my prayers to you.  I have been singing your word in songs of worship to you. Your word has been my delight. In every way I have been letting your word dwell in me richly. Yes, you are.

What has my word been doing for you? Your word has been changing my heart, transforming my mind and guiding my life. Your word has changed the desires of my heart. How so? I want to do what pleases you. I want to know you. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you.  I want to think your thoughts. I want to do your will. I want to live out the life that you have given me to live. I don’t want to sin against you. I want to live and walk in purity before you. Your word is both giving and granting to me these desires of my heart. Yes, it is. You are remaining in my word and my word is remaining in you.  You are making me able to live a life of purity. You are making me able to not sin against you. Yes, I am.

Lord, I am hiding your word in my heart and mind as I memorize and meditate on it day and night. Thank you for using your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Keep my way pure as I follow and serve you. Amen

Living According To Your Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Living According To Your Word - Psalm 119:9-11 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Living According To Your Word – Psalm 119:9-11 – Growing As Disciples

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11

Guard and Guide

Would you like me to guard and protect your life? Yes, I certainly would. What if my protection cost you something, would you be willing to pay the price? What if my protection required your effort to participate in it, would you join in? I’m not sure that I understand. Very well, I would be happy to explain it to you. If you want me to guard and protect your life you will need to make use of the protection that I will freely give to you. I thought you said this would cost me something. I did and it will. Up to this point you have left my word sitting on your coffee table, in the back seat of the car, and even in your hand. It has been everywhere but where it needs to be. Where is that?

I want you to think of my word as being more valuable than silver or gold. I do. Oh really, I don’t think so. Why do you say that? Think of your heart and mind as if it were a bank account. In times of great need, how much of my word is in your heart and mind account to draw on? I’m not sure what you mean. Let’s say that you are under a lot of pressure and you’re about to explode with anger and say something you will really regret. I’ve done that. How much? A lot, I guess. Do you want to be able to be free of that behavior? Yes, I do. What from my word is in your heart that speaks out against angry outbursts? Nothing, I suppose. There is your problem.

Think of my word as a sword that will fight in you, with you and for you. It will win the battles in your heart and mind and help you to stand against evil in the world. Let’s say that you are having a battle with lust. I have and I do. I know. I’ve seen how defeated and discouraged you have been over this. I want you to be set free. Two things need to happen. What’s that? You need to remove all sources of temptation and take hold of my word. In the battle against lust, my word is the sword that the Holy Spirit will use to fight in, with, and for you. So, how much of a sword have you placed in His hand? Not much, I guess. There is your problem.

Think of my word as food that you can store up to feed on and be nourished by. If you feast on my word, you will be strong and able to follow me as you withstand the temptations of this life. Are you hungry for my word? Yes, I am. Then feed on it. Store it up in your heart. Let my word be a sword in your hand. It is my word that will guard, guide, and protect your life.

Lord, thank you for transforming my mind and guarding my heart with your word. You have given me new thoughts to think and feelings to feel. I delight to seek you with all my heart. Guard my life with your word as I follow you.  Amen

His Way Pure

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 100 - Psalm 119:9-16 - His Way Pure - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 100 – Psalm 119:9-16 – His Way Pure – Growing As Disciples

Keep Your Way Pure

Is that what you want? Is what do I want? Do you want to keep your way pure? Do you want a heart and mind and life that seeks me? Do you want a mind that thinks my thoughts? Do you want a mouth that speaks my heart? Do you want a life that does what is good and right and pleasing to me? Yes, I want all these things to be true of me. Do you have any idea how I will make you able to live this kind of life? I know one thing for certain. What’s that? Living this kind of life is not possible without you changing my heart and transforming my mind. You are very wise to know that this is true. How will I change your heart and transform your mind? What tool will do that work in you? Your word will change my heart and transform my mind. What will you do with my word so that it can do its work in you? I will hide your word in my heart. Your word will teach and train me. Your word will help me to not sin against you. Your Holy Spirit will take your word and use it like a sword to fight in me, with me, for me and through me. Your word will make me able to resist temptation. Your word will make me able to withstand evil. Yes, my word and the power of my Holy Spirit will use my word to change your heart, transform you mind and guide your life. I am thankful for your word. It is my joy to meet with you in your word. Having your word is far better than having great riches. I will delight in your word. I will not neglect your word. I will not stray from your word. Your word will be ever before me as I walk through life with you. Guard and guide my life with your word. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, do I always live according to your word? Do I always hide your word deeply in my heart? Do I always keep my way pure? No, I don’t. Forgive me. But hiding your word in my heart, living by it, and keeping my way pure is the desire and direction of my life. Amen
