Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 127 – Luke 5:4-7- You Say So – Growing As Disciples

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”  Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”  When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. Luke 5:4-7 (NIV)

My Word

Will you listen to my word? Will you go and do what I ask of you? Will you go and do what I ask even when you don’t fully understand what I am asking of you? Will you go and do what I am asking of you when you would rather not? Will you go and do what I am asking of you when it is inconvenient and uncomfortable? Will you be willing to go far out of your way to do what I am asking of you? Will you go and do what I am asking of you when you don’t think that the recipient of your efforts is worth your trouble? Will you go and do what I am asking you simply because I asked you to do it for me. I was beginning to wonder how many ways you would ask me if I would be willing to go and do what you asked of me. I just started to scratch the surface of the different ways I could ask you the same question. Would you like me to ask you more questions? No, I get your point. What is my point? You want me to tell you if there are any reasons or situations or circumstances in which I would not go and do what you ask of me. You want to know if I will follow and obey you no matter the cost. These questions and my answers are not for your benefit. You know what I will think before I think it. You know what I will say before I say it. You know what I will do before I do it. Yes, I do. You want me to ask and answer these questions now so that I will remember how I want to answer them in the future. Yes, I do.  Here is my answer. I am listening. I will go and do whatever you ask me to go and do for you under any and every circumstance. I will listen to your word. I will follow and obey your word. Use me to accomplish your purpose and fulfill your plans. Make my life fruitful for your kingdom. Help me to bring glory to your name. I am at your service. That is very good. I will make you fruitful for my kingdom as you obey my word. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, no longer will I live by my own wisdom. Instead, I will carefully hear and fully obey your word. I will take your word deep into my heart and mind and life. I will allow your word to guide my life. I will go and do all you ask of me simply because you say so. Amen

You Say So

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Will – Luke 5:4-5 – You Say So- Growing As Disciples

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:4-5 (NIV)

Say Yes

I have thought of myself as being an expert. The subject hasn’t seemed to matter much. I have had this attitude that I “knew it all.” My pride filled, sinful attitude made to be something like a full glass that nothing more could be poured into. I could not receive instructions. I would not follow directions. I thought that I knew exactly when and where I was going. I thought I knew exactly how and what I should do. Do your words sound pathetic to you? Yes, my words sound pathetic to me. It is embarrassing for me to admit how full of myself that I have been. It is a good thing that you are now willing to admit your pride. I’m sure of that.

What changed for you? You changed me. Life changed me. You used the error of my ways and the foolishness of my thinking to change me. How so? A pride filled, “know it all” kind of life, will always lead to brokenness. Why is that? I don’t know it all. I make mistakes. I need help. I need guidance and direction. I can’t see the future. I don’t know where I should go. I don’t know what I should do. In every way, I need your help. The brokenness of my own bruised and battered life caused me to cry out to you. I asked for your help. I asked for your wisdom. I asked for your direction. Yes, you did. How did I respond to you? You welcomed me with open arms. You did not turn me away. You did not reject my request. You meet me in my need and answered my prayer. You are now leading me and guiding me through life. Yes, I am.

Do you always follow me? Do you always do what I ask? Do you always go where I send you? No, I am sure that I have made many mistakes. I have not always followed you perfectly. I have not always done what you have asked of me. I have not always gone where you have guided me. But, it is the desire of my heart to always say yes to you. You are teaching me. You are training me. Yes, I am. You are teaching and training me to say yes to you even when I don’t fully understand. You are teaching and training me to say yes to you simply because you have said so. Will you continue to say yes to me, because I have said so, even when you don’t fully understand? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, there have been many times when I have thought of myself as being an expert. I have thought that I knew it all. What a dangerous, deceptive sinful attitude. I am not an expert. I do not know it all. I will trust and obey you. I will do what you ask. Amen
