Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 191 – Psalm 119:121-128 – Give Discernment To Me – Growing As Disciples
Don’t leave me to the mercy of my enemies, for I have done what is just and right. Please guarantee a blessing for me. Don’t let the arrogant oppress me! My eyes strain to see your rescue, to see the truth of your promise fulfilled. I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love, and teach me your decrees. Give discernment to me, your servant; then I will understand your laws. LORD, it is time for you to act, for these evil people have violated your instructions. Truly, I love your commands more than gold, even the finest gold. Each of your commandments is right. That is why I hate every false way. Psalm 119:121-128 (NLT)
Discernment
How much of that do you have? How much of what do I have? How much discernment do you have? Is this a trick question? No, it is not a trick question. Well, the answer is obvious for both you and me. It is obvious to me. I’m checking on you. Tell me your thoughts. On my own, without your help, I have very little discernment. That may even be an understatement. Correction, that is a dramatic understatement. At times, I am quite dense. How so? I don’t see what I need to see. I don’t get what I need to get. I make dumb decisions and stupid mistakes. I wander into difficulty. I drift away from you. Without your discernment, my life has no hope of staying on course. I desperately need your discernment to keep my life on track. Yes, you do, there is no doubt about that. I am glad that we agree.
So, it is my prayer that you will give me discernment. What will my discernment do for you? Your discernment will help me to know and do your will. Your discernment will help me to see your work in the world around me. Why is that important? I know that you want me to join you in the work that you are doing all around me. Without your discernment, I would not recognize your activity in the world. Without, your discernment I have and will continue to run off in a hundred different directions, bouncing from one thing to another, doing what will amount to no value. It is your discernment that will make me fruitful as your servant in this world. It is your discernment that will bless my life so that I can be blessing to others in ways that will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. This is what I want. This is my desire. This is my prayer. Give me discernment so that I can serve you well. I will hear and answer this prayer of yours. You will receive discernment from me. Thank you, Lord,
Lord, often I cannot see what I need to see. Frequently, I am oblivious to your working in the world around me. Use your word to give me discernment. Use your word to guide my path through life. Use your word to help to think, speak and act rightly and justly. Amen
