Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Trust – Jeremiah 17:7-8 – Whose Confidence Is In Him- Growing As Disciples

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NIV)

No Worries

You have a choice to make. What are my options? You can choose to rely on yourself. You can struggle and strive to solve all your troubles. You can attempt to work through every detail of all your difficulties. You can consider every possibility in each of your problems. You can try to tough it out, on your own, in every one of your trials and tribulations. You can live a life filled full with worry and anxiety over real and imagined troubles, difficulties, and problems. How is all this sounding to you so far? Not good. I have gone this route. I have walked this path. I have relied on myself. I have worried about every conceivable real and imaginary problem. I have experienced stress. I have lived with worry. I am tired. I am worn out. I am ready to give up. I want none of this kind of life, not now, not anymore.

Then you are ready for your second option. What’s that? You can choose to rely on me. You can ask for my help. You can trust that I will hear your prayers. You can believe that I will meet your needs. You can turn every one of your worries into a prayer to me. Imagine that. If you turned every one of your worries into a prayer to me, you would become quite a prayer. We would have an ongoing never-ending prayer filled conversation with each other. I would like to become quite a prayer. I would like to live my life in a constant dialogue of prayer with you. Then we both want the same thing.

How will you know if you are relying on yourself or trusting me? If I am living a life filled with worry, I will know that I am trusting in myself. If I am living a life filled with prayer, I will know that I am trusting in you. If I am praying instead of worrying, I will do what you and I both want. That’s right. Will you turn every one of your worries into a prayer to me? Yes, Lord, I will. Then you will have nothing to worry about because you will be trusting in me.

Lord, you are worthy of all my confidence and trust. In the heat of difficulty, I will rely completely on you. You have always been with me. There is nothing that you have not brought me through. So, I will not fear as I hold on to you through the difficulties of life. Amen

Perfect Peace

Discipleship Study - Trust - Psalm 26:3-4 - Your Thoughts- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Study – Trust – Psalm 26:3-4 – Your Thoughts- Growing As Disciples

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. Isaiah 26:3-4 (ESV)

Your Thoughts

What occupies your thoughts? What causes you to be filled with anxiety and stress? When are you most likely to be under attack? Those are all very good questions for me. Why is that? As you know, I am quite a worrier. I have a life filled with stress. Why is that? Do you think it is my will for you to worry and carry a heavy load of stress? No, I’ sure that you want me to be filled with your peace. That’s right. Why are you so often not filled with my peace? My mind is set on the wrong things. Like what? I think about my problems. I think about real problems that I have in the here and now. I think about future problems that might never come. I think about imaginary problems that don’t really exist in any place other than in my mind. You actually make up things to worry about? I guess so. That’s not good. I know. I would like it if I didn’t worry. I would be very happy if I were not full of anxiety. Is that a prayer of yours? Yes, it is. I would like you to relieve me of my worry and free me from my stress.

Why do worry? Worry is the way that I try to solve my problems. I think about my problems from every angle. I think about what could happen. I think about ways to solve what might happen. Do you worry about your worry? Do you worry about your anxiety and stress? Yes, I do. That’s certainly worth thinking about. Why is that? All your worry and anxiety and stress will either make you ineffective for me or ruin your health. Now that is something to worry about. Stop It.

Let me ask you some questions. Has worrying improved your life? Has worrying solved your problems? No, worry has not improved my life or solved my problems. Has worrying sapped your energy and increased your anxiety and stress? Yes, it has. Instead of worrying about problems why don’t you ask me for help? Would you like my help? Do you believe that I can and will help you with your problems? I believe that you can and will help me with my problems. Do you think that your life would be relieved of stress and filled with my peace if you placed your trust in me? I know that if I placed my trust fully in you I would be filled with your peace. Will you place your trust in me? Will you allow me to fill your life with my peace? Yes, Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, you are my everlasting rock. You are my fortress. You are my deliverer. You are my helper in time of need. You are worthy of all my faith and trust and hope. I will fix all my thoughts on you. I will rely on you for your help. I will trust in you now and forever. Amen
