Blessed Are Those Who Wait For Him

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing - Isaiah 30:18 - Blessed Are Those Who Wait For Him - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Isaiah 30:18 – Blessed Are Those Who Wait For Him – Growing As Disciples

Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)

Waiting

Who are you waiting for? I’m not sure what you mean. Who will you rely on for your help? Who will aid you? Who will supply what you need? Who will give you wise counsel? Who will guard and guide and protect your life? Those are good questions. Do you have an answer? Yes, I have an answer. Let me hear your answer. I will wait for you. I will rely on you to come to my aid. I will rely on you for my help. I will trust that you will supply what I need. You will guard and guide and protect my life. Yes, I will, as you are waiting for me.

How will you know for sure that you are waiting on me? I will come to listen to you. I will meet with you in your word. I will hear all that you have to say to me. I will let your word dwell in me richly. I will allow your words to change my heart and transform my mind and guide my life. I will allow your word to give me your thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do. That will be very good.

Will it be enough for you to listen to my word? Certainly not. I must act on your word. I must go where you guide me. I must do all that you ask of me. I must put your word into practice. Then I will know that I have truly been waiting on you. Then I will know that you are guarding and guiding and directing my life. Yes, you will.

What will be sure signals that you have stopped waiting on me? If I stop meeting with you in your word, I will no longer be waiting on you. If I no longer allow your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life, I will no longer be waiting on you. If I do not put your word into practice, I will not be waiting on you. If I do not go where you guide me or do all that you ask of me, I will not be waiting on you. If I come to rely on someone or something else other than you, I will not be waiting on you. Will you keep waiting on me so I can bless your life? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been obstinate and slow to hear what you wanted to say to me. I have been rebellious and unwilling to listen attentively to your instructions. No more. I will wait and rely on you to guide, guard and protect my life. Speak to me. I am listening. Amen

Wash One Another’s Feet

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - John 13:14-17 - Blessing - Wash One Another's Feet - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – John 13:14-17 – Blessing – Wash One Another’s Feet – Growing As Disciples

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:14-17 (NIV)

An Example

I am your Lord and teacher. Will you humble yourself before me and allow me to teach you? Will you love like I loved? Will you give like I gave? Will you serve like I served? Don’t be quick to say that you will. I want you to be very sure of your answer. Why is that? The decision you make now will help you to make all your subsequent decisions. Say a firm and sure yes to me now and all your subsequent decisions to say yes to me will come much easier, without a lot of internal debate. So, you are not really asking me to say yes just for now? No, I am not. You are asking me for a lifetime of yeses to you. Yes, I am.

Is there anyone that you are unwilling to serve? Is there something that you will not do for me? Is there some place I cannot send you? Do you have a line in the sand that you will not cross? Could I ever ask too much of you? Don’t say anything to me just yet.

Have I held myself back from you? Has there ever been anything that I was not willing to do for you? Was there ever anyplace that I would not go for you? Was there ever a line in the sand that I would not cross for you? Was any request, by my Father, on your behalf, ever too much for me? No, you gave yourself fully and completely for me.

I have set before you an example. Will you humble yourself before me and serve others? Will you lay down your life so that others can live? Will you be my witness in the world? Yes Lord, I will. Is this a one time yes or a lifetime of you continually saying yes to me? I’m saying yes to you today, tomorrow and forever. I will go where you guide me to do all that you ask of me.

Was this a hard decision for you? No Lord, it was not. Why is that? I know that as I humbly serve you and others you will richly bless my life. It will be my joy to bring glory to your name. You made me for this purpose. You have designed me according to your plan. I will be doing what is the desire of my heart that has come from you to me as a gift. Yes, you will.

Lord, thank you for setting before me a very clear example I can follow. Help me to humble myself to wholeheartedly serve other people. Bless my life as I bring glory to your name by loving as you loved and giving as you gave.  Amen

Key Question… What blessings has the Lord brought into your life through your humble service to others?

Living It Out… Let the Lord use your life as a shining example of humility and service to other people.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord Jesus Christ will bless your life as you humbly serve other people.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has used you to humbly serve another person.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you humble yourself before the Lord your teacher and example so that He can use you to serve others.

You Were Called

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - 1 Peter 3:9 - You Were Called - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – 1 Peter 3:9 – You Were Called – Growing As Disciples

Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

Be A Blessing

I have a calling on your life. My calling will define both who you are and all that you do. My calling will change your heart and transform your mind. You will not think, feel and act as you once did. How will I think, feel, and act because of your calling on my life? Once you simply reacted to however you were treated by others. You were no different than anyone else in the world. You traded evil for evil and insult for insult. But, that is not what I have called you to be. That is not what I have called you to do.

Who have you called me to be? What have you called me to do? I have called you to be mine. I have called you to do what I have done. What is that? You tell me, how did I respond to others when I was mistreated? What did I do in response to my adversaries? Did I trade evil for evil and insult for insult? No, you did not. You loved even those who launched evil and hurled insults against you. Yes, I did.

Why do you think I was willing to love and bless my enemies? You had a different perspective and purpose. Yes, I did. Tell me what you think my different perspective and purpose was. You weren’t looking at your adversaries from a personal and earthly perspective. You did not take offense at their evil insults. You reacted to evil with your goodness. You responded to insults with blessing. You did the opposite of what would be expected. Yes, I did and why was that? You wanted to draw people to you rather than push them away from you. You wanted to win the hearts of those who were filled with evil and insults. Yes, I did.

Will you ever be a witness for me if you selfishly react to evil and insults? No, I will just turn people away from you and me. Do you want to live the life I have for you? Do you want me to bless your life? Yes Lord, I do. Then, right now, I am asking you to be and do one thing. Just one thing? Yes, one thing. What’s that? Be my blessing to others in this world. Will you allow me to make you into a blessing that draws others to me? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have often traded evil with evil and insult for insult. Forgive me. Help me to live out my calling to pray for and bless the lives of others. Use me as your witness in the world as I give out and receive blessings from you. Amen

He Meditates Day And Night

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - Psalm 1:1-3 - He Meditates Day And Night - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Psalm 1:1-3 – He Meditates Day And Night – Growing As Disciples

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1:1-3 (NIV)

Fruitful

Do you want to be able to live the life that I have called you to live? Do you want to live a life that is fruitful for me? Yes, of course I want to live a fruitful life. I want to be able to live the life that you have called me to live. Do you believe my word? Can you trust and act on what you see and hear in my word? Yes, I believe your word. I always want to act on what I see and hear from your word. Is there something that you want to say to me? Is there something from your word that you want me to see and hear and act on? Will seeing and hearing something from your word make me fruitful for you? Will seeing and hearing something from your word help me to live the life that you have called me to live? You are asking very good questions. Yes, there is something form my word that I want you to see and hear and act on. Yes, if you put into practice what I want you to see and hear your life will be fruitful for me. You have my full attention. I’m listening carefully to you.

First, you must distance yourself from evil of every kind. There are places you should not go. There are things that you should not do. There are people that you should not allow into your inner circle of friends. You must not be influenced by thoughts, words and deeds that are evil. Eliminate anything and everything from your life that might feed and cause evil desires to grow in you. Do you hear what I am saying? I think so. I am not saying that you must remove yourself from the world. I am not saying that you will not reach out and minister to those who do not know me. I am not saying that you must try to hide yourself away in some corner to make sure that you are not exposed to evil. You will still live in an evil world. Just make sure that your heart and mind and life are not feeding on the evil that is in the world. I understand.

What else? Next, meditate on my word day and night. Carry my word with you wherever you go. Feast on my word. Let my word teach and train you. Let my word guard and guide you. Let my word dwell in you richly. My word will change your heart, transform your mind and guide your life. If my word is dwelling in you richly, you will be abundantly fruitful for me. If my word is dwelling in you richly, you will be able to live the life that I have called you to live. Will you meditate on my word day and night as you separate yourself from evil? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, you have rescued me from an unfruitful and weary life. You have made it my delight to meditate on your word. Your word has changed my heart and mind. Thank you for blessing my life and making me fruitful for you. Amen

Perseveres Under Trial

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing - James 1:12 - Perseveres Under Trial - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – James 1:12 – Perseveres Under Trial – Growing As Disciples

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12 (NIV)

Persevere Through Trials

You are the only one that can make me able to persevere the trials of life. I don’t want to be one bit self-reliant or self-sufficient in the trials of life. I don’t want to allow myself to think that I can fend for myself through even the smaller trials in life. Why is that? Smaller trials have a way of becoming larger trials. I lack wisdom, especially when I am going through trials. I react. I make mistakes. I take missteps. I have often thought or said or done what was helpful when I have been in the midst of trials. I have regretted my thoughts and words and actions. I have had to go back and retrace my steps. I have had to try to unsay or undo what I have unwisely said or done. That isn’t easily said or done. Besides, going through smaller trials seems like a training ground for the larger trials in life that are sure to come. That’s true. So, I would rather rely on you upfront in every small and large trial in life. That sounds good to me. It sounds good to me too.

What will you ask me for when you are going through trials in life? I will ask you for wisdom. I will ask you for strength. I will ask you to give me all I will need to go through the trials of life. I will ask you to guide my life. I will ask you to guard my path. I will ask you to lead me to where I should go. I will ask you to give me what I should do. I will ask you to help me to form the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and actions of my life. Those are all very good requests that I will hear and answer as you come to rely on me.

How will you ask me for all that you need as you go through the trials of life? With a heart full of faith, I will ask you for your help. I will believe and not doubt. I will draw near to you and know with certainty that you will draw near to me. That is very good. I will hold on to you as I am certain that you will hold on to me. I will trust that you will guard and guide and protect my life as I keep on following you. I know that you will be with me every step of the way as I walk through the trials of life. You will help me in every way. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I have not always understood trials in life. Sometimes, I have wondered what was going on and where you were when I was in the midst of a trial. Looking back, I can see you were with me to help me. Thank you for helping me to persevere through trials. Amen

His Trust

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing - Psalm 40:4 - His Trust - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Psalm 40:4 – His Trust – Growing As Disciples

Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. Psalm 40:4 (NIV)

Trust In Me

Are you placing all your trust in me? I don’t know. How can I possibly know the answer to that question? Are you thinking that you can’t possibly know the answer to that question? Yes, that is exactly what I am thinking. Then you have the wrong thought in you. There is a way you can know if you are or are not placing all your trust in me. How so? Let me ask you a few questions. You have my full attention. That’s good. Here goes. I’m ready. Are you worried? Are you full of stress? Are you paralyzed by indecision? Are you filled with doubt and fear? Do you lack confidence to make decisions and move forward? Are you timid or are you bold? I see where this is headed. You are a quick study. Not really. Yes, I know.  If I am worried and filled with stress, I am not placing all my trust in you. The same could be said about indecision, doubt and fear. If I can’t make a decision and move forward it is almost a certainty that I am placing my trust in myself. You want me to trust you so that I can boldly serve you. That’s right. I want you to place all your trust in me. That’s what I want. That will be very good.

I have not finished helping you to know if you are placing all your trust in me. There is more? Yes, there is much more. Do you have many more questions for me? Yes, I have more questions for you. Are you praying to me? Are you asking for my help? Are you turning your worry and stress and anxiety into prayers to me? Are you turning your doubts and fears and timidity over to me? All these are just symptoms of the problem. What is the problem? You are not placing all your trust in me. Placing all your trust in me will require you to pray to me. So, there are really negative and positive signs to indicate if I am really placing all my trust in you, is that right? Yes, that is right.  Now, you’ve got it.

Will you come to me in prayer? Will you turn your life over to me? Will rely on me for all that you need? Yes Lord, I will pray. I will turn my life over to you. I will rely on you for all that I need. Then you will be placing all your trust in me.

Lord, I have made the mistake of trusting in my own strength, abilities and resources as I have gone through trials in life. I have also trusted in others. Those have been foolish choices that have failed miserably. Forgive me. I will now place my full trust in you. Amen

Takes Refuge In Him

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing - Psalm 34:8 - Take Refuge In Him - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Psalm 34:8 – Take Refuge In Him – Growing As Disciples

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.      Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

Taste And See

I’m not on a diet. I don’t want just a little sample. I don’t want a very small taste. I want to hunger for you. I want to thirst for you. I want to feast on your goodness. I want to drink fully of the life you are calling me to live with you. I want to be well feed and satisfied, but always hungry for more of you. I want to see all of your kindness, goodness, mercy and love. I want to know you. I want to love you. I want to follow you. I want to serve you. I want to take complete refuge in you. I want to draw near to you. I want to live in your presence. I will bow myself down before you. I will quiet myself at your feet. I will listen to every word you have to say to me. Let me hear your voice. Speak to me, I am listening. Revive me. Refresh me. Restore Me, Renew me. Do your work in me. Mold and shape me. Make and mold me. You are the potter. I am the clay. Without you, I am nothing. With you, I will have all that I have ever needed or wanted. Let me say this clearly, without any hesitation, I am yours. I am here and I am listening. Use me for your purposes. Help me to accomplish you plans. Let me be your instrument. Show me where you want me to go. Give me what you want me to do.

What if I don’t have anywhere for you to go? What if I have nothing for you to do? What will you do if I simply want you to sit here and taste and see my kindness, mercy and love? What will you do if I want you to be right here, right now to take refuge in me? Will you rush off? Will you make up your own mission? Will you give yourself your own task? Will you make yourself busy? Have you not been busy enough? Have you not done enough? Would it be too much to ask you to come and sit with me? Would it be too difficult for you to come and learn from me? Do you really want to taste and see my kindness, mercy and love? Yes Lord, that is the desire of my heart and mind and life. I could ask for nothing more. I could want nothing with stronger desire. Come to me. You will taste and see my goodness, as you take refuge in me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for drawing me close to you in prayer and worship so I could taste and see your goodness. You have delivered and rescued me from out of fearful troubles.  You have blessed my life as I have taken refuge in you. Amen

The Man You Discipline

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - Psalm 94:12 - The Man You Discipline - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Psalm 94:12 – The Man You Discipline – Growing As Disciples

Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law;           Psalm 94:12 (NIV)

My Discipline

I can hardly believe the changes you have been making in my life. Like what? Like everything. You have changed the entire course of my life. Not a day has gone by that you have not been molding and shaping my life. I’m not claiming that I recognize all the changes you have been making in my life on a daily basis. I don’t. But, I can look back over time and see that you have been working in and through my life. You have been teaching me. You have been training me. And yes, you have been disciplining me. Not that I like discipline. I don’t. Discipline is uncomfortable. Discipline is unpleasant. Your discipline has certainly gotten me out of my comfort zone. I’d like to hear you say more about that.

If my discipline has been so uncomfortable and unpleasant why have you been so eagerly welcoming it into your life? Who said I was eagerly welcoming your discipline into my life? Are we talking about the same person? Are we talking about me? Yes, I am talking about you. You are eagerly desiring that I train you. You are enthusiastically listening to my teaching. Every day you are meeting with me in my word so that you can hear from me. You are attentively listening to me. You are putting my word into practice. You have repeatedly told me that it is your highest desire to know me. You have said that you want to live in an intimate relationship with me. You eagerly want to know my will and walk in my ways. I have even heard you say that you don’t evaluate my word but that my word evaluates you. You have gone on to say that you want all your thoughts and words and actions to be in complete alignment with my will. Yes, all of what you have said is true. All these desires are in my heart and on my mind. I consider every one of them to be a gift from you. This is the work that you have been doing in my heart and mind and life. Yes, it is. I want to love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Yes, you do. I can see that. You are receiving my discipline and following my teaching. Keep on meeting with me. Keep on listening to me. Keep on putting my word into practice. Yes Lord, I will. That is very good. Then my discipline and teaching will continue to bless your life.

Lord, I have been reluctant, resistant and rebellious. I have even tried to reject your discipline and teaching. I thought I knew it all. I thought I needed nothing from you or anyone else. How foolish! Now, I will welcome your discipline and teaching into my life. Amen

No Revelation

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - Proverbs 29:18 - No Revelation - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Proverbs 29:18 – No Revelation – Growing As Disciples

Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law. Proverbs 29:18 (NIV)

Revelation

That is exactly what I need. What’s that? I need revelation from you. I need to hear from you. You know what to do if you want to hear from me. Yes, I do. Tell me what you know. I know that I will find you when I seek you with all my heart. I know that you will draw near to me as I draw near to you. I know that you will speak to me as I meet with you in your word. I know that I will hear from you as I stop and take time to quiet myself before you so I can listen to you.  I know that you will generously give me your wisdom when I ask you for it. I also know that I am unlikely to hear from you as I race through life. I am certain that the noise and busyness of life will make it very difficult for me to hear from you. So, what will you do? Will you seek me with all your heart? Will you stop to hear from me? Will you turn your heart and mind toward me? Will you allow my word to speak into your life? Will you accept the wisdom that I want to generously give you? Yes Lord, I will.

What has my word done for you as you have received it into your heart and mind and life? Your word has guarded me. Your word has guided me. Your word has given me wisdom. Your word has kept me on track. Your word has kept me from going where I should not go. Your word has prevented me from doing what I should not do. Your word has brought my heart and mind and life into alignment with your will. Your word has helped me to do what is pleasing in your sight. Yes, my word has and will continue to do all these things for you.

But, you are a little desperate right now. You are in a bind. You are under attack. You are on the verge of becoming discouraged and depressed and downcast. Is this all true? Yes Lord, this is all true. Then this is a good opportunity for you to come to rely on me. Seek me with all your heart. Meet with me in my word. Receive the wisdom I want to give to you. Stop and listen carefully to me. Hear and receive and put into practice all that I will show you. Do what is pleasing in my sight. Keep on living the life that I have called you to live. Have faith. Will you place all your hope and faith and trust in me? Will you allow my word to guard and guide you? Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, thank you for your word. Speak to me as I meet with you in your word. Show me what you want me to see. Help me to hear all you want to say to me. Guard and guide my life according to your word as I follow and obey you. Amen

Building Others Up

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - Ephesians 4:29 - Build Others Up - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – Ephesians 4:29 – Build Others Up – Growing As Disciples

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

Your Words

I want my words to be life giving. I want to speak life giving words that will bless and encourage and build others up according to their needs. That would be quite a change. What do you mean by that? I have spoken so many unwholesome words. Lots of corrupt and polluting language has come out of my mouth. Isn’t that old news? What do you mean by that? Haven’t you placed a guard over your mouth? Haven’t you asked me to change your heart and transform your mind so that you can think my thoughts and speak my words? Isn’t it your earnest desire to think and speak and do only what is pleasing in my sight? Yes, that has been my prayer. That is the desire of my heart. Aren’t you meditating on my word day and night? Aren’t you allowing me to use my word to change the thoughts of your mind, the words of your mouth and the deeds of your life? Yes, I am meditating on your word day and night. Yes, I am allowing you to change the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and deeds of my life. That is very good.

So, what’s the problem? I don’t think or speak or do what is pleasing to you all the time. You mean to say that you still sin? You mean to tell me that you still need my forgiveness? You mean to reveal to me that you are not perfect? I’m guessing that all this comes as no big revelation to you. That’s a good guess. I should also tell you that I don’t always speak life giving words that build others up. Isn’t this a day filled with surprises? Now, I know that you are not taking me seriously. Oh, I am taking you very seriously. I seriously want you to think and speak and do what is pleasing to me. I seriously want you to speak life giving words that will bless and encourage and build others up. I also know that you love me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength. I know that it is the prayer and desire of your heart to do what is pleasing to me. I know that you seriously want to bless and encourage and build others up with your words. It is the prayer and desire of your heart to do what is pleasing to me. We both know that you will not think and speak and act perfectly in this life. You will sin. You will need my forgiveness. You will confess your sin to me. You are forgiven. You will be forgiven. You will get up and keep on moving forward with me. You will go where I guide you. You will do what I ask of you. You will speak words that I give to you. You will bless and encourage and build others up with your words. Yes, I will. That will be very good and pleasing to me.

Lord, I have said many unwholesome words and used lots of polluting language. Forgive me. I want all of my thoughts and words to come from you. Help me to speak life giving words that will bless and encourage and build people up according to their needs. Amen
