Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – John 13:14-17 – Blessing – Wash One Another’s Feet – Growing As Disciples

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:14-17 (NIV)

An Example

I am your Lord and teacher. Will you humble yourself before me and allow me to teach you? Will you love like I loved? Will you give like I gave? Will you serve like I served? Don’t be quick to say that you will. I want you to be very sure of your answer. Why is that? The decision you make now will help you to make all your subsequent decisions. Say a firm and sure yes to me now and all your subsequent decisions to say yes to me will come much easier, without a lot of internal debate. So, you are not really asking me to say yes just for now? No, I am not. You are asking me for a lifetime of yeses to you. Yes, I am.

Is there anyone that you are unwilling to serve? Is there something that you will not do for me? Is there some place I cannot send you? Do you have a line in the sand that you will not cross? Could I ever ask too much of you? Don’t say anything to me just yet.

Have I held myself back from you? Has there ever been anything that I was not willing to do for you? Was there ever anyplace that I would not go for you? Was there ever a line in the sand that I would not cross for you? Was any request, by my Father, on your behalf, ever too much for me? No, you gave yourself fully and completely for me.

I have set before you an example. Will you humble yourself before me and serve others? Will you lay down your life so that others can live? Will you be my witness in the world? Yes Lord, I will. Is this a one time yes or a lifetime of you continually saying yes to me? I’m saying yes to you today, tomorrow and forever. I will go where you guide me to do all that you ask of me.

Was this a hard decision for you? No Lord, it was not. Why is that? I know that as I humbly serve you and others you will richly bless my life. It will be my joy to bring glory to your name. You made me for this purpose. You have designed me according to your plan. I will be doing what is the desire of my heart that has come from you to me as a gift. Yes, you will.

Lord, thank you for setting before me a very clear example I can follow. Help me to humble myself to wholeheartedly serve other people. Bless my life as I bring glory to your name by loving as you loved and giving as you gave.  Amen
