Stand Against The Devil’s Schemes

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - So That - Ephesians 6:11 - Stand Against The Devil's Schemes - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- So That – Ephesians 6:11 – Stand Against The Devil’s Schemes – Growing As Disciples

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  Ephesians 6:11 (NIV)

Take Your Stand

You are in a battle. You are in a fight. You are in a war in this life.  Do you know why this is important for you to know? If I am in a battle and in a fight and in a war in this life, I must be ready to stand and fight. Are you ready to stand and fight? Who is my enemy and what is he like? Your enemy is the devil and all of his evil. Then I would say, I am not ready for the battle. I am not strong enough to fight. Only you can prepare me for warfare. Only you can make me able to stand and fight.

You must know three things in preparing for battle. You must know three things that will make you ready for the fight. What’s that? You must know that you are in a war. You must be on guard and vigilant. Your enemy might attack and strike you at any time. Never forget that. Never let down your guard. Always be vigilant. Yes Lord, I will remain on guard. I will be vigilant. What else? You must know your enemy and his evil schemes. The devil will attack you where and when you are weakest. He will look for an opportune time. Sometime you will see him coming. Sometime he will try to take you by surprise. You know where you are weakest. Do you know what you should not be doing? Do you know where you should not be? Don’t let the devil find you in his evil and on his ground. Stay away from sin and darkness. Live and walk in the light with me. Yes Lord, I will stay away from evil and darkness. I will be aware of the devil and his evil schemes. I will walk in the light with you. What else? You must know that you are not ready for battle and cannot stand and fight. You must allow me to make you ready. I will train you for battle. I will make you ready for war. You must rely on me to make you strong. You must receive my mighty power. How will I do that? You must put on the full armor that I will give to you. You will take up my shield of faith. You will grab a hold of the sword of my Spirit. Your head will be covered with the helmet of my salvation. Your heart will be protected with my breastplate of righteousness.   The belt of truth will be buckled around your waist. Your feet will wear the gospel of peace. You will be in constant prayer as you remain watchful, ready and on guard. Then you will be able to take your stand to fight against the devil and all his evil schemes. You will not falter. You will not fall. I will be with you in the fight.

Lord, I know I am in a battle and engaged in warfare against the devil. I will put on the full armor you have given to me. I will receive all your training. Only you can prepare me for battle and make me able to stand and fight against the devil and all his evil. Amen

A New Thing

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Isaiah 43:18-19 - A New Thing - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Isaiah 43:18-19 – A New Thing – Growing As Disciples

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

No Way

So, you think that there is no way. Did I say that or did I only think that? What difference does it make? Well, if I thought something but didn’t say it, I might not have accepted it as being true. Let’s talk about your thoughts. What do you have in mind? I want you to move forward with me. I want you to follow me to where I am leading you. I want you to do what I am asking you to do for me. What do my thoughts have to do with going where you guide me and doing what you ask of me? That’s a good question. What kind of thoughts have hindered your ability to go and do what I have asked of you? In the past? Yes, in the past. In the past I have doubted that I could hear you. I have wondered if you were speaking to me. I wasn’t sure that I could know and do your will. I thought maybe I was alone in the world. Because I had these thoughts, I didn’t listen for your advice or seek your counsel. I wandered from one thing to another. I stumbled around in life. I made very little progress. I took one step forward and three steps back. What do you think now? Now, I know that I can hear your voice leading and guiding me through life. I am waiting for your instructions. I am following your advice. You are helping me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. So, you have put away these former thoughts.  You are not dwelling on your past inability to hear my voice? No, I am not. That’s good.

What other thoughts have hindered your ability to go and do what I asked of you? I thought that everything depended on me. I thought, if something was going to be accomplished it would have to be my gifts and talents and abilities that would get it done. What do you think about these thoughts now? They are ridiculous. They are so limiting. They are completely paralyzing. What do you mean by that? With these thoughts I would never go and do what you asked of me. Why is that? You have always asked me to go and do what I cannot possibly do. You want me to rely on you working in and through me. You want to accomplish what only you can do in and through me. You want me to know without a doubt that what was accomplished was accomplished by your power and strength rather than by my own limited gifts, talents and abilities. That’s right. So, you put away these former thoughts. You are not dwelling on your past failures because you once relied solely on yourself? No, I am not. Are you ready for me to do new things? Are you ready for me to use your life in new ways? Yes Lord, I am.  Then there is a way, that I will provide. I am ready to take that new way that you will provide. My heart and mind and eyes are open to what you want to do in and through my life. I’m glad to hear that from you.

Lord, I have had a hard time moving on from the past. I have dwelt on painful experiences. I have allowed the past to hinder me from being engaged in the present. Open my heart, mind and eyes to what you are doing now. Turn my barrenness into fruitfulness. Amen

Indescribable Gift

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - 2 Corinthians 9:15 - Indescribable Gift- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – 2 Corinthians 9:15 – Indescribable Gift- Growing As Disciples

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15 (NIV)

Gift

How would you describe the gift that I have given to you? Are you asking me how I would describe the gift of salvation that I have received from you? That’s right. I can’t possibly begin to describe all that you have done, are doing and will do for me through your gift of salvation. Why not? Your gift has a past, present and future. I could describe some of what you have done for me already, even though, I’m sure I inadequately understand even that. What you are doing for me now is unfolding. My mind hasn’t caught up with all your present activity in my life. I certainly don’t know all that you will do for me in the rest of this life or in my life forever in heaven with you. No, you don’t. But, I’m excited. I’m waiting. I’m filled with wonder and anticipation. I’m joyfully looking forward to living each day with and for you. That’s good.

Describe what you can about my gift of salvation. I will give it a try. You wiped my slate clean. You gave me a fresh start. You forgave all my sin. You cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. You healed my battered and broken life.  You have restored my soul. You have refreshed me in your presence. You have allowed me to taste of your kindness, mercy and love. You are my God and Father. You are my God and King. You are my fortress and deliverer. You adopted me into your family. You have made me to be your child. You filled me with your Holy Spirit. You helped me to walk away from my old life. You have been using your word to change my heart and transform my mind. You are allowing me to think your thoughts, speak your words, and do your deeds. You have given me a completely new life to live. You have given me a future and a hope. You have a purpose and plan for my life. You are leading every day as I love, follow and serve you. I am holding on to you as you hold on to me. You are drawing near to me as I draw near to you. You are allowing me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Your hand is on me. You are lavishing me with your life. You hear and answer my prayers. You listen to me as I listen to you. My life is in your hands. I look forward to the day when I will come to live forever in heaven with you. That is very good.

Heavenly Father, your gift of salvation, through your Son’s death on the cross for me, is too wonderful for words to describe. I can’t stop talking about all that you have done, are doing and will do for me. I can’t even conceive of what my future with you holds. Amen

Watchful

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - Colossians 4:2 - Watchful - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Colossians 4:2 – Watchful – Growing As Disciples

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Colossians 4:2 (NIV)

Devoted To Prayer

What would your life look like if you were to devote yourself to prayer? What would you do that you are not now doing? Those are good questions. I want to devote myself to prayer. I will devote myself to prayer. I think it is important to start by saying yes to that decision. That’s true. I know that you want me to devote myself to meeting with you in prayer. I can hear you calling me to come to you. That’s good. I know that you are inviting to come into your presence to meet with you. You want me to draw near to you as you draw near to me. Yes, I do.

I have not been fully devoted to prayer. I have been praying daily. I have been meeting regularly with you in prayer. But, I know that you want to take me deeper. You want to develop my life of prayer with you. Yes, I do. I’m not sure what that will look like. There is only one thing that I know for certain. What’s that? You will develop and deepen my life of prayer with you if I make myself fully available to you. How will you do that? I will set apart a time and a place to meet with you in prayer. I will enter your classroom of prayer. I will draw near to you. I will remain in your presence. I will be still before you. I will allow you to teach and train me how to pray. I will pray the prayers that you give me to pray. That will be very good.

Do you have something you would like to ask me? I would like you to help me to be devoted to you in prayer. Give me an insatiable hunger to meet with you in prayer. Make me to be an enthusiastic student of prayer. Help me to be watchful to whatever you want to show me. Help me to listen attentively to your voice. Help me to know your will. Guide my steps. Direct my path. Guard my life. Lead me on this journey of prayer with you. Help me to live my life in a constant dialogue of prayer with you. Do all your work in me. Help me to live the life of prayer that you are calling me to live. Do you believe that I will hear and answer these prayers of yours? Yes, I do. Why is that? You have given me this desire to be devoted to you in prayer. This desire that you have given to me, you will surely grant. Yes, I will.

Lord, I will devote myself to living a life of prayer with you. I will set apart a time and a place to meet every day in prayer with you. Use our time together to help me to see what you want to show me. Help me to be watchful and thankful as I pray to you. Amen

Be Strong And Courageous

Discipleship Study - Character - Joshua 1:8-9 - Be Strong And Courageous- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Study – Character – Joshua 1:8-9 – Be Strong And Courageous- Growing As Disciples

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 (NIV)

My Promises

How will you be encouraged? How will you be strengthened? What will make you courageous? How will you be careful to go and do everything I ask of you? What will help you to be prosperous and successful? What will you hold on to through all the ups and downs and twists and turns of life? I know what I will not hold on to. What’s that? I will not hold on to my gifts and talents and abilities. I will not hold on to my education and training. I will not hold on to my money and material possessions. I will not hold on to my strength and health. I will not hold on to my past accomplishments. Not one of these things will sustain me through all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life. That’s true.

You know quite clearly what you will not hold on to when you go through trials in life. Yes, I do. That’s good. Do you know what you will hold on to when you face all the storms of life? Yes, I do. I will hold on to you. I will hold on to your promises. I will hold on to your word. How will you do that? I will hide your word in my heart. I will store your word in my mind. I will meditate on your word day and night. I will allow your word to guide my life. Your word will train me. Your word will instruct me. Yes, it will. Your word will teach me what I need to know. What do you need to know? I need to know that you will be with me. You will help me. You will lift me up and encourage me. You will strengthen me. You will make me courageous. You will help me to be prosperous and successful. You will make me able to go and do your will. Yes, I will. That’s not all. What else? Your word will help me to do what I need to do.  What do you need to do? I need to trust you. I need to rely on you. I need to put your word into practice. I need go and do whatever you ask of me. Yes, you do. That is what I will do. I will rely on you. I will hold on to your promises. That will be very good.

Lord, I will meditate on your word day and night. Your word will be in my heart, on my mind and lived out in my life. I will think, speak and act on your word. Help me to be careful, strong and courageous. Be with me wherever I go and in whatever I do for you. Amen

God Clothes

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - Matthew 6:30 - God Clothes - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – Matthew 6:30 – God Clothes – Growing As Disciples

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Matthew 6:30 (NIV)

Trusting Me

Why do you worry? Why do I worry about what? You name it, you worry about everything. You worry about the past, you can’t change. You worry about the present, you can’t control. You worry about the future, you can’t predict. You worry about your safety and security. You worry about your duties and responsibilities. You worry about fulfilling my purposes and accomplishing my plans. You worry that you might be overwhelmed. You worry that you might be inadequate. You worry that you might lose control. You worry that you might miss out. Do you want me to go on? No, I think you could continue all day listing all my worries. That’s right. You even worry that you are worrying too much. Yes, I do. Yes, you do what? Yes, I worry about my worry. Yes, I worry too much. That’s true.

How can I stop worrying? Now, that is a good question. There is one thing for certain. What’s that? You can’t stop worrying by deciding to stop worrying. I know that’s true. Why is that? I’ve tried that method many times before, it does not work. What does work? Do you really want to stop worrying? You need to be certain that you want to stop worrying. Who doesn’t want to stop worrying? You would be surprised. Many people do not want to stop worrying. Why is that? Believe it or not, some people think that they are more in control of a situation if they can worry about it. They must think that all their worrying will solve whatever is the subject of their worries. That sounds like the voice of experience. Unfortunately, it is. But, I am certain that I would like to stop worrying. Good, that is a great place to start. How can I move on from that desire to starting to stop worrying? You must begin to start trusting me. When you are worrying, who are you trusting? When I am worrying, I am trusting myself. That’s right. As long as you are placing your trust in yourself you will never be able to stop worrying. Do you know why that is? Trusting myself, means I think that I am in control. Are you in control? No, I am not in control. You are in control. What do I control? What is outside of my control? What can I not accomplish? What can I not do? Everything is under your control. There is nothing you cannot accomplish. There is nothing you cannot do. Am I trustworthy? Am I ready and willing and able to help you? Will I hear and answer your prayers? Will I come to your aid? Will I be with you to help you with what you need? Yes, you are trustworthy. Yes, you are ready, willing and able to hear and answer my prayers. You will come to my aid and help me with what I need. Will you stop trusting yourself and start trusting me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been a constant worrier. I have thought by working harder and worrying more I could meet all my own needs. Forgive me. I know it is your delight to hear my prayers and meet my needs. I will bring them all to you. Amen

Looks Intently

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Blessing - James 1:22-25 - Looks Intently - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Blessing – James 1:22-25 – Looks Intently – Growing As Disciples

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it–he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22-25 (NIV)

Into Practice

What do you think will happen to you if you continue to look intently into my word? That is a very good question. I know that if I continue to look intently into your word I will be changed by it. How so? Your word will change my heart. Your word will transform my mind. Your word will guide my life. You will use your word to mold and shape my life. You will use your word to make me into the person that you have called me to be. That’s right. So, it is not a waste of time of your time to continue to look intently into my word. There is nothing that I consider to be of higher value than to meet with you in your word. That’s an interesting way that you said that. You are not merely studying my word? No, certainly not. You are meeting with me in my word. Yes, that’s right. You are meditating on my word. You are praying my word. You are letting my word dwell in you richly. Yes, I am.

You know that my Holy Spirit will take my word and apply it right to your life, right now. Yes, that’s exactly what I am counting on. I know that your word is like a sword in the Holy Spirit’s hand. He will use your word to fight in me, with me, and for me. What do you mean by that? Well, putting your word into practice will set me free. The world and all its principles, values and practices will lose their grip on me as I take hold of your word. Your word will strengthen me and make me able to stand against temptation. Just as your word fought for you against the devil and all his evil so also will it fight for me. Yes, it will.

How has my word blessed your life? Your word has changed my thoughts, words, and deeds. Your word has changed the desires of my heart and the goals of my life. Your word has given me hope and meaning and purpose in life. How so? Now, I want to live my life fully for you. Now, I want to go and do what is pleasing to you. Now, I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Now, I am looking forward to a future and far better day when I will come to live forever in heaven with you. In the meantime, I will continue to put your word into practice with all the strength that you will give to me. That is very good.

Lord, I have no desire to merely listen to your word. Every day I will look intently into your word. Show me what you want me to see and know. Help me go and do all that you are teaching me. Set me free and bless my life by your word as I put it into practice. Amen

Love Must Be Sincere

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Romans 12:9-10 - Love Must Be Sincere - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:9-10 – Love Must Be Sincere – Growing As Disciples

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)

Lovingly Devoted

What does real love look like?  How do you know if you sincerely love other people? Is it enough to have a loving attitude without taking any action? I’m not sure how to answer these questions. Why is that? I’m not sure that I have loved others sincerely. In fact, I’m pretty sure that I haven’t loved others sincerely. What makes you think that? Those words “be devoted” are staring me in the face. I’m not sure how devoted I have been to serving others. Are you kidding me? Can’t you see how much of your time and energies are being devoted to serving others? It looks to me like you are devoting your life to serving others. Really, it does? Yes, it does.

Look at how much of your life is being spent in service to others. Would you say that you use a little bit or most of your time in service to others? I don’t want to take credit or pat myself on the back. I know you don’t want that. You have just the opposite problem. What’s that? You aren’t encouraged by the fact that you are devoted to serving me and others. Your devotion to me and others should bring you joy and peace. Instead, you have this false guilt that you can and should be doing more. I will ask you to do more for me. You can be sure of that. But, I don’t want you to carry false guilt that you haven’t done enough.  Do you know what this false guilt will do to you? No, not really. It will discourage you and make you want to give up and quit. You will lose the peace and joy of being devoted to serving me and others. Your work will become hard labor that you will not be able to sustain. Guilt induced hard labor is an evil that you must hate and reject. Love motivated devotion to me and others is a joy to be welcomed and savored. This kind of love and devotion will lift you up and encourage and strengthen you to do even more for me and others. But the desire to do more will not come from guilt or a sense of obligation. You can’t make yourself to be lovingly devoted to serving me or others. That is something that I will do in, for, and through you. I’d like that. Yes, I know.

My love is going to do a new work in you. How is that? I want you to grow in the way that you honor others above yourself. You may have noticed that I have already been teaching you how to take a step back so that others can take a step forward. Yes, I’ve noticed. I want you to encourage others in their love and devotion to me.  I want you to show others how they can be devoted to serving me. I want them to see you honoring others above yourself because you are devoted to serving me. There is one more thing that I also want others to see in you. What’s that? I want them to see the joy and peace that is yours because you are lovingly devoted to serving me. Will you allow me to do this work in and through your life? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will hate what is evil and hold on tightly to what is good. I will pursue the life you have called me to live. I will devote all my efforts to loving and honoring others deeply from my heart. Use all my thoughts, words and deeds to bless the lives of others. Amen

Lack – Ask

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - James 1:5-8 - Lack - Ask - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – James 1:5-8 – Lack – Ask – Growing As Disciples

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.  James 1:5-8 (NIV)

No “If”

That’s a funny statement. What’s that? There is no “if” about it. I lack wisdom. I don’t lack just a little bit of wisdom. I don’t need a small amount of wisdom to round me out to make me wise. I am in desperate need of your wisdom. That’s good. What’s good? It is a very good thing that you are ready and willing to admit that you desperately need my wisdom. Your admission of your lack of wisdom is the first step in your receiving wisdom from me. You have not always been willing to admit that you needed wisdom. That’s right. I have been independent and self-sufficient. I have been filled with pride. I have thought that I did not need wisdom. I have operated as if I didn’t need any help from you. That’s true. But now you know that you need wisdom from me. Yes, I do. Now you know that you need wisdom from me everyday. Yes, I do. Now you know that a day should not go by in which you don’t ask me for my wisdom. Yes, that is true. You need wisdom in both the small and big decisions that you will make in life. Yes, I do. All my little and big decisions will one day add up to the life that I have lived. I want to live a wise life that is pleasing to you in every way. That’s good.

Now that you know that you need wisdom from me what will you do? I will ask you for your wisdom. I will rely on your wisdom. I will trust in your wisdom. I will wait for your wisdom. How much wisdom do you think I am willing to give to you? I believe that you will generously give me your wisdom. You will never find fault in me for asking you for your wisdom. You will never tell me that I have asked you for too much of your wisdom. You will never turn away my request for more of your wisdom. It sounds to me like you have no doubts about my willingness and desire to give you wisdom. I have no doubts about you being willing to generously give your wisdom to me. That is why I will keep on coming to you to ask you for your wisdom. That will be very good. I will hear and answer your requests for my wisdom.

Lord, I lack wisdom. There is no doubt about that. I have left a trail of poor decisions as evidence of my lack of wisdom. I need your help and wisdom. Help me to make good decisions as I live my life for you. I have no doubt you will hear and answer my prayer. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Freedom – Galatians 5:1 – Set Us Free- Growing As Disciples

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Stand Firm

Stay right there, stand firm where you are right now. Where am I right now? You have been set free. You are living in the freedom that I have secured for you. The power of sin has been broken over your life. You are no longer under the bondage of your old life. You are no longer in the grip of old addictions. Nothing has a hold over you any longer. You have a hold of me. Yes, I have a firm hold on you. I am your Savior and Lord. I am your God and Father. You are my child. You are under my protection. You can walk freely to where I lead you. You have the power to do what I ask of you. So, I will say it again, “Stand firm, in the freedom that I have secured for you”.

How can I stand firm in the freedom that you have secured for me? How can I make sure that I will not let myself be burdened again by a yoke of slavery? You will not go where you should not go. You will not do what you should not do. How will this be sure and true? You will draw near to me as I draw near to you. You will submit yourself to me, resist the devil and all his evil. Then he will flee from you. Don’t think that you can resist the devil and all his evil with your own will and strength. If you try, you will surely fail. It is in your drawing near to me and submitting yourself to me that you will continue in the freedom and victory that I have secured for you.

What has happened to you as you have continued to draw near to me? As I have continued to draw near to you, my love for you has grown stronger every day. Every day it is the desire of my heart to live my life with and for you. I hunger for you. I thirst for you. I want to know you. I want to know your will. I want to walk in your ways. In every way, I want to do what is pleasing to you, not because I should or must, but because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. What has happened to your desire for sin as you have continued to draw near to me? Sin has lost it attraction. Sin has lost its appeal. I would much rather walk through life with you than live in sin. That is very good. Keep on drawing near to me and you will never again submit yourself to a yoke of slavery to sin.

Lord, I know you have set me free. You have made it so I can walk in your freedom. No longer will I live as a slave in bondage to sin. I will never allow myself to be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. I will live with you, in the fullness of life, you have given to me. Amen
