Because You Say So

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Luke 5:5 - Because You Say So - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Luke 5:5 – Because You Say So – Growing As Disciples

Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:5 (NIV)

Move Forward

You’re tired and worn out. I can see that. You have worked long and hard, that’s for sure. Do you want to take a break and rest for a while? Yes, you’ve got that right. What if it’s not time to rest? What if it’s time to get up and move forward? Will you obey me? Is there a battle going on in your mind? Are you telling yourself that because you’ve worked so hard you deserve a break and time to rest, even relax? Yes, I am.

Do I never let you rest? Do I always ask you to move forward when you are weary and worn out? No, not usually, hardly ever in fact. But, now is different isn’t it? Yes, it is. I know how hard you have worked and I’m asking you to not let up. Now is not the time to rest and relax. Now is the time to get up and move forward. Will you obey me now?

Yes, Lord I will obey you now. What is it that you want me to do? I want you to continue to do the work that I have already given you to do. Dig deeper, work harder, apply yourself fully to the ministry that I have given you to do for me.

Do not think that I will leave you weary and worn out. I will refresh and revive you as you follow and obey me. My power and strength will be with you. My hand will rest on you. You will have my favor with you. I will pour out my Spirit on you. You will be filled to overflowing with my Spirit. You will live the life that I have given you to live for me. I will accomplish my purposes and plan in and through your life.

As you follow and obey me you will bear abundant fruit for my kingdom and glory. You will be a witness and shine brightly for me. Others will be drawn to me through your life.

So, keep moving forward with me. Do not shrink back. Do not give yourself what you think you deserve. I have far more for you than that. Let me use you according to my purposes and plans. Follow me now. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have worked hard. I am worn out. Are you sure that it is not time for me to take a rest? My efforts have not born fruit. Nevertheless, I will move forward with you and do all that you ask of me. Help me bear fruit for you. Amen

Held Up His Hands

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Exodus 17-11-12 - Held Up His Hands - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Exodus 17-11-12 – Held Up His Hands – Growing As Disciples

As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up–one on one side, one on the other–so that his hands remained steady till sunset. Exodus 17:11-12 (NIV)

Keep On Praying

Victory does not depend on you. There are battles that you will never win with your own efforts. You will not defeat every enemy in life by yourself, no matter how much you wish that you could. Why is that? Did you make me weak on purpose? No, I did not make you weak on purpose. That’s really the wrong question and the wrong way to look at things. What is the right way to look at things? Do you wish that you were self-sufficient and had no need of help from me? No, I don’t want that at all. If you never really needed me for anything would you ever call on me for help? No, I’m sure that I wouldn’t. Why do you say that? Well, from my past experience I know that when things are going perfectly I have a tendency to not call on you very much. Very much? Ok, at all.

So, is it a great gift to have everything that you need and want or is it a gift to have great needs that cause you to cry out to me for help? Now, I see why you said that I was looking at things incorrectly. What has great need caused you to do? Great need has caused me to cry out to you in prayer. When you have been in great need did you pray just once or did you keep on praying? I kept on praying until my need was met, the battle won or the problem was solved. Yes, you did.

When you have cried out to me in prayer what has happened to our relationship? Our relationship has grown and deepened as I have prayed and trusted you through the needs, problems and battles in my life. Yes, it has. If you could choose between a problem free life or a deeper relationship with me what would you choose? I would choose a deeper relationship with you. Yes you would. Do you really need a bunch of problems to grow in your relationship with me? No, I don’t. Problems still get my attention and cause me to cry out to you but they are not the reason I keep coming to you.

Why do you keep coming to me? I come to you because you love me and I love you. Yes, I do. I am your child. Yes, you are. There is no place that I would rather be than in your presence meeting with you in prayer. So, I will keep on praying. Yes, you will.

Lord, thank you that you have given me the desire to come to meet with you in prayer. Thank you that I can cry out to you for help. You meet my needs, solve my problems and give me victory as I rely on you instead of on myself. Amen

I Am Willing

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Luke 5:13 - I Am Willing - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Luke 5:13 – I Am Willing – Growing As Disciples

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. Luke 5:13 (NIV)

Willing

I am glad that you are willing to heal me. I am glad that you are willing to cleanse me. I am glad that you are willing to revive, refresh and restore me. I am glad that you are for me. You hear and answer my prayers. You have richly blessed my life. My prayers do not fall on deaf ears. I can make known to you what I want and need. You are always willing to help me. Yes, I am.

Is there a lesson here for you to learn? What is that? You tell me. I’m not sure what you mean. Since I am willing to help you with whatever you need, what must you do? I get it. I understand. Since you are willing to help me with what I need, I must learn to ask you for what I need. Why is that? Do I not know what you need? Must you tell me what you need for me to know what you need? Am I not observant? Can I not hear? Can I not see? Am I not listening? Am I not watching? Do I not know your thoughts even before you think them? Can I not see what you need even when you cannot? You know what I want and need even before I do. You hear everything. You see everything. Nothing escapes your notice. That’s right.

Why must you learn to ask me for what I need? You want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. My biggest need is to come to know you. My biggest need is to come to rely on you. My biggest need is to live and walk with you everyday throughout my entire life. That’s right. You want me to live in a constant dialogue of prayer with you. You want to speak to me. You want me to hear from you. You want to guard and guide my life. You want me to follow and serve you. You want me to go where you guide me. You want me to do what you ask of me. You want to work in and through my life. I can have none of these things unless I learn to come to you in prayer. The doorway to all you want to give me is me coming to ask you for what I need. That is right. That is true. That is good. Will you come to ask me for all that you need? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you that I am never unclean and unpresentable to you. In fact, you are the only one that can cleanse my life. You are the one who reached out to touch and heal me. Now, I want to go and tell others about your kindness, mercy and love. Amen

Such Great Faith

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Matthew 8:10 - Such Great Faith - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Matthew 8:10 – Such Great Faith – Growing As Disciples

When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. Matthew 8:10 (NIV)

Faith And Action

Could I have that? Can I ask you for that? Can you have what? You can ask me for anything. Can I ask for great faith? Yes, you can ask me for great faith. Why do you want great faith? Great faith must be used. Great faith must be exercised. You will never know if you have great faith until you step out in faith. Great faith is not meant to go unused. Great faith is not passive. Great faith does not sit around and do nothing. Great faith takes action. So, if I ask you for great faith, I must also be asking you to help me to take great action. You got that right.

I want great faith. I will take great action. I will not sit around. I will not let the great faith you give me go unused. That’s good. What kind of action might you be willing to take? I will meet with you every day in your word. I will have faith to believe that you will speak to me. I will have faith to believe that you will help me to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. I will have faith to believe that you will mold and shape my life. I will have faith to believe that you will give me thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do. That will be very good. What else? I will go and do what you ask of me. I will have faith to believe that you will make me able to know and do your will. I will have faith to believe that you will make me able to accomplish your purpose and fulfill your plans. I will have faith to believe that you will use me as your witness in the world. I will have faith to believe that you will help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is also very good. What else? I will not give up. I will not quit. I will have no regrets. I will make no retreats. I will hold nothing in reserve. I will pour myself out in your service. I will have faith to believe that you will revive, refresh and restore me as I love, follow and serve you. That is very good. I will give you all that you have asked of me. I will give you great faith. I will help you to take great action.

Lord, I have not always had great faith. Even now, I want and need much more faith. Grow my faith in you. Help me to rely fully on you. Help me to have faith to ask you for all I need. Help me to have faith to go and do all that you ask of me for your glory. Amen

First Of His Miraculous Signs

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - John 2:11 - First Of His Miraculous Signs - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – John 2:11 – First Of His Miraculous Signs – Growing As Disciples

This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. John 2:11 (NIV)

Faith In Him

Where is your faith? What do you mean by asking me that question? I don’t understand what you mean. In what have you placed your faith? What are my options? You tell me. I could place my faith in what money can buy. If I had an abundance of money, I might have lots of faith and feel very secure. What would happen if you suddenly lost all your money? What would happen if you desperately needed something that money couldn’t possibly buy? That could happen. I could lose it all quite easily. Yes, you could, Money can’t buy everything. In fact you might say money can’t buy the most important things in life. That’s true. What could you also try to put your faith in? I could put my faith in power or prestige or position. How secure might those be? Those seem even less secure than money. I could lose any of those in a split second. Would wealth or power or prestige or position be of any value once you leave this life? No, they are of no value beyond this life. Then none of them are worthy of you placing your faith in them. No, they are not.

Have you placed your faith in me? Yes, I have placed my faith in you. Why have you placed your faith in me? What makes me worthy of all your faith? You left heaven. You came down to earth. You died on the cross for me. You paid for my sins. You broke the power of sin over my life. You turned my life around. You have forgiven my sins. You have cleansed me of my unrighteousness. You adopted me into your family. You made me to be your child. I can now know you. I can now live in an intimate relationship with you. You are changing me every day as I follow you. You are molding and shaping my life. You are giving me new thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do. I can pray to you. You will hear and answer my prayers. You have done, are doing and will do miraculous things for me. Yes, I have. Yes, I am. Yes, I will. You have made it possible for me to live a completely new life in you. My eternal life and salvation in you has already begun. Yes, it has. You are completely worthy of me placing all my faith in you. Yes, I am.

Lord, you did a miraculous work for me that changed the entire course of my life now and forever. You left heaven. You died on the cross for my sins. You rose from the dead. Now, I have a completely new life in you. I will continue to put all my faith in you. Amen

According To Your Faith

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Matthew 9:29-31 - According To Your Faith - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Matthew 9:29-31 – According To Your Faith – Growing As Disciples

Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you”; and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region. Matthew 9:29-31 (NIV)

Your Faith

How much faith do you have? I’m not sure that I can answer that question. Would you like me to ask you a few questions about your faith? Yes,  I would like that. Is it worth your time and effort to cry out to me in prayer? Do you believe that I am able to answer your prayers? Do you believe that I will hear and answers your prayers? Are you consistently and persistently coming to ask me for all that you need? Those are all good questions. Do you have some good answers? I have some answers. I’m not sure how good they are. Let me hear your answers. I do believe that you are able to answer my prayers. I do believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. I am certain that it is well worth my time to cry out to you in prayer. Those are all good answers. Are your answers all true? Why do you ask that? You tell me.

If I believe that you can and will hear and answer my prayers then I would pray more. I would cry out to you, more regularly, with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. That’s true. If I believe that you can and will hear and answer my prayers I would consistently and persistently keep on crying out to you in prayer. That is also true. So, would you say that what you believe is not consistent with your actions? Yes, I would. What do you want to do about that? I want to ask you for your help. I will cry out to you and ask you to teach me how to pray. I will cry out to you and ask you to develop a pattern and practice of prayer in me. I want to meet with you in prayer. I want to come to ask you for all that I need. I want you to give me prayers to pray. I want you to work in and through me as you give me prayers to pray. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name through the prayers that you give me to pray. Use the life of prayer you will develop in me to accomplish your purposes in and through me. Will you keep on praying these prayers? Yes Lord, I will. Then I will hear and answer your prayers.

Lord, I will persistently cry out to you in prayer. With a heart filled with faith, I will come to ask you for all I need. I will rely on you to hear and answer my prayers. Thank you for all the goodness you have shown to me. Use me as your bold witness in the world. Amen

Thinking These Things

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Mark 2:8 - Thinking These Things - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Mark 2:8 – Thinking These Things – Growing As Disciples

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Mark 2:8 (NIV)

Your Thoughts

How are you guarding the thoughts that you allow your mind to think? I’m not sure what you mean. I think thoughts that come into my mind. Is your question suggesting that I can control the thoughts of my mind? Are you implying that I am not powerless to think about every thought that enters my mind? Do I have the ability to guard the thoughts that I think? What do you think? At one time, I was powerless to control the thoughts of my mind. I simply kept on thinking whatever thought came into my mind. That’s not good. No, it is not. Why is that? My thoughts will become words. My words will become deeds.  My thoughts and words and deeds will become the sum total of the life I will live. So, at one time, you had very little control over the life you would live. You were subject to whatever thoughts came into your mind. That’s true.

What has happened to you? You have been given me new thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do. How so? As I have been meeting with you in your word you have been changing my heart and transforming my mind. Your word has been protecting my mind. Your word has been changing me from the inside out. Day by day, you have been strengthening my heart and mind so that I can think thoughts that are pleasing to you. You have been strengthening my heart and mind so I an reject thoughts that are displeasing to you. So, you are growing in your ability  to guard the thoughts of your mind. Yes, that’s true.

Is my work in you complete? How so? Do you only think thoughts, speak words and do deeds that are pleasing to me? Are you fully living the life that I have called you to live? No, your work is not finished in me. I still think thoughts, speak words and do deeds that are not pleasing to you. I am not yet fully living the life that you have called me to live. Are you discouraged? Do you want to quit? Are you tempted to give up? No, I am not discouraged. I do not want to quit. I am not tempted to give up. Just the opposite is true. How so? I am encouraged because you are changing me moment by moment and day by day. I am the work of your hands. You are molding and shaping my life. Every day I am thinking more of your thoughts, saying more of your words and doing more of your deeds. I am more fully living the life you have called me to live. I welcome you to continue your work in me. That’s good. I will keep on changing your thoughts, words and deeds as you love, follow and serve me.

Lord, I have thought what I would rather not think. My thoughts have led me to say what I wish I had not said. My thoughts have led me to do what I wish I had not done. Change the thoughts of my mind so that I can live the life you have called me to life. Amen

His Flesh Was Restored

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - 2 Kings 5:13-14 - Your Instructions - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – 2 Kings 5:13-14 – Your Instructions – Growing As Disciples

Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.  2 Kings 5:13-14 (NIV)

Your Instructions

Would you like me to bless your life? What kind of question is that? Of course, I want you to bless my life. Who wouldn’t want you to bless their lives? You would be surprised. Do you believe that I want to bless your life? Do you know that it brings me great joy to be able to bless your life? I believe that you want to bless my life. I know that it brings you great joy to bless my life. That’s good. I do have a question. Go ahead, ask me, I’m listening. Is there something that could prevent you from blessing my life? Why do you ask that? You used the phrase, “be able to bless” my life. That seems to imply that something could make my life unable to be blessed by you. You have asked a very good question. I will ask you a few questions. Have I ever given you instructions? Have I ever guided you to go somewhere for me? Have I ever given you something to do for me? Yes, you have guided me to go somewhere to do something for you. This is not a rare occasion. Have you always followed me to where I have guided you? Have you always done what I asked of you? No, not always. There are many times that I failed to go where you guided me to do what you asked of me. That’s not good. No, it’s not.

Has your life been blessed by me when you have gone where I have guided you, to do what I have asked of you? Yes definitely. How so? In any number of ways. Name a few. As I have gone and done your will, you have worked in, with, for and through my life. As I have followed and obeyed you, I have borne fruit for your kingdom and brought glory to your name. You have brought healing and hope into my life as I have followed your instructions. As I have done what you have asked of me, you have guarded my life. You have restored my soul. You have healed my life. You have grown my faith. You have changed my heart, transformed my mind and guided my life. You have richly blessed me with many good gifts as I have followed and obeyed you. Yes, that is very true.

Have you experienced the same blessing on your life when you have not followed and obeyed me? No, I have not. Following my own way and doing my own thing has brought me into trouble and given me great difficulty. Not listening to you has brought the world’s harm rather than your help into my life. That’s true. So what will you do? I will follow your instructions. That will be very good.

Lord, I will tell you now in advance that I will follow and obey you. I will listen carefully to your instructions. I will go where you guide me. I will do what you ask of me. Use my life to fulfill your purposes and accomplish your plans. Help me to bring glory to you. Amen

The Very Words

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - 2 Kings 6:12 - The Very Words - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – 2 Kings 6:12 – The Very Words – Growing As Disciples

“None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.” 2 Kings 6:12 (NIV)

I Need Your Help

I need your help. That’s good to hear. How do you need my help? I lack wisdom. How so? I need your insight and understanding. Why is that? Without your wisdom I am likely to make stupid mistakes and take large missteps. I don’t want to waste time and effort. I don’t want to wander through life. I don’t want to walk a crooked path from one futile thing to another. I’m not asking for your wisdom, insight and understanding for my benefit. Although, I do know that I will benefit greatly by receiving your wisdom, insight and understanding. Yes, you will. But, I’m asking for your wisdom, insight and understanding so that I can know and do your will. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. That is very good.

You do have a ready source of my wisdom, insight and understanding that I have already made readily available to you. Yes, I know. You have given me your word. That is why I am meeting with you every day in your word. I so desperately want your wisdom, insight and understand. I can see that in you. What then, is your problem? What is your need? Sometimes, I am very slow to understand. Sometimes, I am very dense. That is a helpful admission on your part. It is a very good thing that you are admitting your need. It is a very good thing for you to know and acknowledge that you need my help. I will never turn you away when you ask for my help. You can never go wrong by coming to me to ask me for my help. You can never fail to benefit by meeting with me in prayer so you can hear from me. It is my joy and pleasure to give you the wisdom and insight and understanding that you will need as you love, follow and serve me. That is what I thought. That is what I believe. That is what I know. I can come to you and ask for your help. Yes, you can. Here I am now. Give me all the wisdom and insight and understanding I will need as I follow you today. That is my prayer. I will hear and answer that prayer. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I do not know what I need to know. I don’t have all the wisdom, insight and understanding I need. Thank you, that you will give me the wisdom, insight and understanding I will need as I love, follow and serve you. I will rely on you. I will ask for your help. Amen

Your Path Is A Reckless One

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Numbers 22:32 - Your Path Is A Reckless One - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Numbers 22:32 – Your Path Is A Reckless One – Growing As Disciples

The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. Numbers 22:32 (NIV)

Reckless Path

What path will you walk in life? Where will you go? What will you do? How will you live? I think those questions have already been answered. How so? At one time I walked on a dark and dangerous, reckless path. I did what I wanted when I wanted. I lived for my own comfort and pleasure. I did what was right in my own eyes. I led my own life. I was the center of my own universe. Everything revolved around me. I didn’t want or need anything from anyone else. I was obstinate. I was stubborn. I was filled with pride. No one could tell me anything I did not want to hear. I followed my own counsel. That is a dark and dangerous, reckless path. How did walking on that path work out for you? Not well, at all. Tell me more. No one can live this life without becoming bruised and battered and broken. That is exactly what happened to me. I hit rock bottom. My life was a mess. I reached the end of my rope. I had no hope. So, I cried out to you. Yes, you did. What did I do for you? You pulled me up out of the muck and mire that was my life. You set me on firm ground. You turned my life around. You became my Savior and Lord. You forgave my sin and cleansed my unrighteousness. You set me on a new path of loving, following and serving you. Yes, I did all of this for you. I am now desiring to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. Yes, you do. I can see that.

But, it’s time to take a little reality check. How so? Are you still trying to assert your rights? Must people live up to your expectations? Will you allow yourself to be mistreated? Will you overlook an offense? Do you need to right every wrong that has been committed against you? Before you answer, I want you to know that I do not expect you to live in an ongoing abusive situation. I am not calling you to allow your life to be under constant threat. But, know also, that I did not assert my rights. I suffered harm. I looked over offenses committed against me. Will you do what I did? Do you want to become like me as you follow me? Yes Lord, I want to become like you. I will do what you did. I will not continue to assert my rights. People must not live up to my expectations. I will overlook offenses committed against me. That is very good. Now, follow me. Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, thank you for taking me off a reckless and dangerous path. You rescued me. You turned my life around. You took me off a path that led to death. You put me on the path of life. You are my Savior and Lord. Guard and guide my life as I follow and serve you Amen
