Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 152 – Exodus 14:13-14 – The Lord Will Fight For You – Growing As Disciples

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.  The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Be Still

Can you be still before me? Can you come and rest in my presence? Can you sit quietly before me? Can you wait for me to act on your behalf? I know one thing for certain. What’s that? Being still, resting in your presence, sitting quietly before you, and waiting for you to act is much harder and more difficult than it would seem. Why is that? It takes real discipline to be still before you. It requires significant effort sit before you. Resting in your presence does not come easily or naturally to me. All my natural inclinations are to be active, to stay busy and be on the move. Those same inclinations become even stronger when a battle is before me. In the past, it has been almost impossible and irresistible for me to quickly engage in a fight to try to win the battle that is before me. I am sad to say that asking for your help and relying on you to fight my battles has been far from my thoughts and actions. I have nearly always fended for myself in fighting my battles in life. I can now see how mistaken my thinking has been. Forgive me Lord. You are forgiven.

What has happened when you have fended for yourself in fighting your battles in life? I have usually made matters worse. I have hardly ever won a battle that I have fought alone, with my own strength. I have certainly been filled with anxiety and worry and stress when I have attempted to fight battles with my own efforts alone. I have most often lived in defeat because I have neither asked for or relied on your help. That is not good. I can see that now. That is good.

What do you think will happen to you as you rely on me to help you fight battles in life? I will come to know you more intimately. I will live and walk more closely with you. My faith and hope and joy in you will become strong. I will know that you are with me to help me. I will know that you will fight for me. I will learn that you will bring me through every battle in life. You will lead me in victory. You will help me to overcome. Yes, I will. Will you be still before me? Will you quiet yourself in my presence? Will you allow me to help you? Will you keep moving forward with Me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, at one time I thought that all my battles were mine alone to fight. What mistaken thinking. My fighting often only made matters far worse. Now, I know that I can be still before you. I can rely on you. You will help me. You will give me victory over battles. Amen

Fight For You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 40 - Exodus 14:13-14 - Fight For You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 40 – Exodus 14:13-14 – Fight For You – Growing As Disciples

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.  The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Fight For You

Would you like me to do that for you? Would I like you to do what for me? Would you like me to fight for you in the battles of life? What is the alternative? You could take matters into your own hands. You could rely solely on yourself. That sounds like a foolish choice to me. Why would it be a foolish choice for you to rely solely on yourself? Why would it be a dumb decision to take matters into your own hands? I have been there. I have done that. What has been the result? When I have taken matters into my own hands, I have usually fought losing battles. I’ve noticed.

Do you believe that I will fight for you in the battles of life? Do you believe that I will be with you to help you? Am I trustworthy? Am I reliable? Can you place all your hope and faith and trust in me? Yes, I believe that you will fight for me in the battles of life. Yes, I believe that you will be with me to help me. You are trustworthy. You are reliable. Yes, I can place all my hope and faith in trust in you. That’s good.

I have two words for you. What two words do you have for me? Prove it. Prove what? Prove that you believe that I will fight for you in the battles of life. Prove that you believe that I will be with you to help you. Prove that you know I am trustworthy and reliable. Prove that you can place all your faith and hope and trust me. I am not going to ask how I can prove all these things to you. Why is that? The answer is obvious. Yes, it is, isn’t it? Nevertheless, tell me the obvious answer. The only way for me to prove that I trust you is to trust you. My trust in you, needs to be demonstrated by my trust in you. That’s right.

What will you be able to do in the battles of life when you place all your faith and hope and trust in me? I will be able to be unafraid. I will be able to stand firm. I will be able to be still. I will be able to watch you fight for me. I will be able to see you lead me in victory. How fantastic will that be? Fantastic beyond words that I can adequately express. Will you trust me? Yes Lord, I will trust you. That will be very good.

Lord, often I have foolishly taken matters into my own hands and ended up fighting losing battles. Help me to learn to rely completely on you. Help me to be unafraid and stand firm as I rely on you to fight with me, for me and through me in all the battles of life. Amen

Will Fight For You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God The Father - Exodus 14:13-14 - He Will Fight For You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Exodus 14:13-14 – He Will Fight For You – Growing As Disciples

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Be Still And Stand Firm

What do you mean by saying, “stand still?” Can’t you see everything that is swirling around me. I am in deep trouble. I need to do something. I need to take action. I can’t stand still. Why not? If I just stand still and do nothing I will be swamped by the conflict that is raging around me. Did I say do nothing? I thought so. Think again. What were my actual words? You said, stand firm and I will see the deliverance you will bring about today. Yes, I did. Does that sound like doing nothing to you? It did at first glance. It would be good for you to give my words far more attention than a passing glance. Consider deeply what I am saying to you. Take my word into your heart and mind and life. Hear my word. Put my word in practice. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

So what did I tell you to do? You told me to stand firm. What does that mean? It means I should trust you. I should not allow my attention to be focused on the size and nature of my battle. I should not let my battle take the focus of my heart and mind and life off of you. I should not race around trying to cover every base and fight every battle. I should watch and wait and listen for your activity. I should allow you to fight for me. I don’t need to take every matter into my own hands. I don’t need to solve every one of my own problems. You will help me. You will fight for me. Yes, I will.

I want you to think differently about your battles in life. How so? In the past you have thought that it takes great faith to fully engage in all the battles that are before you. There is some truth in that. You have not been wrong in your thinking. Now however, I want you to see that it also takes great faith to be still and stand firm. Sometimes, it takes far more faith to be still and stand firm than it does to begin to engage in a battle. I get that, I understand. Now, I want you to learn to be still and stand firm. I want you to learn to wait for me to fight for you. I want you to allow me to fight for you. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, I will stand firm and wait to see your deliverance in and through the battles I face in life. I believe that you will fight for me and put this battle I face in my rear view mirror, never to be seen or heard from again. Amen

Be Still

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Miracles - Exodus 14:13-14 - Be Still - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Miracles – Exodus 14:13-14 – Be Still – Growing As Disciples

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Move On

Don’t just sit there paralyzed in your fear. What would you have me do? You tell me. Well, if I’m sitting here paralyzed in my fear, it’s a good bet that once again I am relying on myself to try to fight the battle that is before me right now. You want me to come to rely on you. You don’t want me to rely on myself. My own power and strength will never get me through the battles of life.

No, it will not. You want me to trust you to help me through the battles that I will face in life. Yes, I do. I wonder how many battles I will need to go through before I learn to rely on you completely. Based on my track record, I wonder if I will ever come to fully rely on you in the battles of life. Is that a question? I guess it is. More and more you are learning to rely on me. So, don’t become discouraged. Don’t give up. Keep learning to rely on me. Learning to rely on me is a lesson that will continue until the day you come to live forever in heaven with me. That’s what I thought. Be encouraged though, because you are making great progress in learning to rely on me to help you. I will. That will be very good.

Now, there are two concepts that I want you to consider as you rely on me. What are they? First, I want you to learn to be still as you trust me. I want you to be still so you can hear and see me at work to help you. Don’t frantically race around trying to pull together all your resources. Your resources will never be enough to win your battles in life. Learn that the battle is not yours. Learn that the battle is mine. Watch and see me fight for you. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

What I am about to say may seem contradictory. There is a time to cry out. There is a time to pray. There is a time to ask for my help. There is a time to rely fully on me. There is a time to watch and wait and look and listen for my help in your battle. Then a time will come for you to move on. Relying on me will require you to get up, get going and move on. Relying on me fully will require you to trust that I will fight in you, with you, for you and through you. Yes, you will also be required to fight. But, there is a big difference in how you will be fighting. How so? You will not be fighting with your own strength. You will be relying on me in all your battles of life. That, I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been filled with fear in the battles I have faced in life. Forgive me for not praying to you and turning all my fears over to you. I know that you will fight with me and for me as I rely on you to stand firm and face my fears. Amen

Fear Not – Stand Firm

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Exodus 14:13-14 - Fear Not - Stand Firm - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Exodus 14:13-14 – Fear Not – Stand Firm – Growing As Disciples

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14:13-14 (ESV)

Fight For You

Where do I go from here? What do you mean by that? I can’t go forward. I can’t go backward. I can’t turn to the right or to the left. I am surrounded. I have no hope. This is going to be a disaster. I will certainly be defeated. I was worried about this happening to me. Now look at my situation. What do you expect me to do? Where do you think I should go? You led me here. I sure hope you have some answers for me. I’m in way over my head. I’m going down fast. I will drown without your help. That’s good. That’s right. That’s true. You have a very accurate understanding of your situation. There is nothing you can do. Great, that’s just great. Even you think I’m in a hopeless situation. I didn’t say that. You are jumping to conclusions. Just because I said there is nothing you can do does not mean you are in a hopeless situation. I don’t understand what you are saying to me. If I can’t do anything, where is my hope? Now, that is a very good question. Your hope is not in yourself, that is for sure. All your gifts, talents and abilities and strength will not get you out of this impossible situation. Then I have no hope at all. Again, I didn’t say that. If you have no hope in yourself, where might you have hope? I can have hope in you. Yes, you can.

You asked me, “Where should you go and what should you do? Yes, I did. You should go nowhere and you should do nothing. What, I don’t get that? What do you mean, “I should go nowhere and do nothing?” That sounds like giving up and quitting. Yes, you are going to give up, quit and do nothing with your own gifts, talents, abilities and strength. You are going to sit there and watch me fight for you. This is one of those times when I want you to sit there and see my hand work out a victory for you. I want you to know without a doubt that I am with you to help you. You are not on your own. Many times, I will fight with and through you. But today, I am going to fight for you. Can you sit there and rely on me? Can you sit there and trust me? Can you sit there, be quiet and watch me win a victory for you? Yes Lord, I can. That will be very good.

Lord, I have faced difficult and impossible situations in life. I have wanted to turn back. I have wanted to retreat. I have wanted to give up. Yet, you have been with me to help me. Thank you, for fighting for me and bringing me through every difficulty in life. Amen
