Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 26 – Psalm 119-25-32 – Life According To Your Word- Growing As Disciples

My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word!  When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes!  Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.  My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!  Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law!  I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me.  I cling to your testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame!  I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! Psalm 119:25-32 (ESV)

Live The Life

Do you want to fully live the life that I have secured for you? Do you want me to teach you? Do you want me to train you? Do you want me to revive, refresh and restore you? Do you want me to guard and guide you? Do you want me to strengthen you? Do you want me to keep you from ever being put to shame? Yes, I want all these things to be true of my life. Yes, I want to fully live the life that you have secured for me. That is very good.

What will you do because you want to fully live the life, I have secured for you? What role will my word have in your life? What will you do with my word? I know that it is your word that will help me to fully live the life you have secured for me. I will live my life according to your word. Daily, I will meditate deeply on your word. I will allow your word to change my heart and transform my mind. I will allow your word to guard and guide my life. I will allow your word to revive, refresh, and restore me. I will allow your word to teach and train me. It is your word that will strengthen me. It is your word that will feed and sustain me. It is your word that will keep false thinking and speaking and acting far from me. Your word will keep me from ever being put to shame. So, I will allow you to use your word to do your work in me. I will allow you to use your word to help me to fully live the life you have secured for me. Do this this and you will know my will and walk in my ways. Do this and you will run on the course that I have laid out for you. Do this and you will bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name.  That, I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, your word is everything to me. Your word strengthens, protects, and guides me. Your word revives, refreshes, and restores me. Your word fills my heart with joy. Your word helps me to be faithful to you. Your word will keep me from being put to shame. Amen

The Law Of His God Is In His Heart

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Word Centered Life - Day 24 - Psalm 37-30-31 - The Law Of His God Is In His Heart - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 24 – Psalm 37-30-31 – The Law Of His God Is In His Heart – Growing As Disciples

The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just.  The law of his God is in his heart; his feet do not slip. Psalm 37:30-31 (NIV)

Acting Wisely And Justly

Do you want to be able to live wisely? Do you want to be able to speak justly? Do you want your life to have a firm foundation? Do you want to walk securely through life? Yes, of course, I want all these things to be true of my life. I am tired of taking missteps. I am weary of thinking and speaking and acting unwisely or unjustly. What must I do to be able to think and speak and act wisely and justly? You know the answer to your own question. You have no need to have me answer that question for you. Nevertheless, I would still like to hear you affirm what I think is the answer to my question. First then, tell me what you know to be the truth. Tell me the answer you have in your heart and on your mind. If I want to live wisely and speak justly, I must have your word in my heart and mind and life. If I want my life to have a firm foundation, I must allow your word to dwell in me richly. If I want to be on solid ground, have secure footing and not slip or take missteps through life, I must allow your word to guard and guide my life. That is true, you have answered correctly.

How will you allow my word to dwell in you richly? I will meditate on your word day and night. Your word will always be with me. I will allow your word to change my heart and transform my mind. I will allow your word to guard and guide the entire course of my life. I know that your word will make me able to think and speak and act in ways that are pleasing to you. That is also true.

Will you ever regret the time and effort that you spend in allowing my word to dwell in you richly? No, not ever. My time and effort could never be better spent. Your word is molding and shaping my life. Your word is helping me to live the life you have called me to live. Your word is helping me to know and do your will. Your word is making me fruitful in your service. Your word is helping me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I will never regret the time I spend with you, taking your life deeply into my heart and mind and life. That is very good.

Lord, I will take your word deeply into my heart and mind and life. I will allow your word to be the firm foundation of my life. Use your word to make me able to think and speak and act wisely and act justly. Use your word to keep my feet from slipping. Amen

Key Question…  How are you daily taking God’s word into your heart and mind and life?

Living It Out…  Allow God’s word to make you able to think and speak and act wisely and justly.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that taking God’s word into your heart and mind will help you to walk securely through life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how God’s word has given you a firm foundation in life.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you take God’s word into your heart so you can think and speak and act wisely and justly.

Trained By Constant Practice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Word Centered Life - Day 25 - Hebrews 5-11-14 - Trained By Constant Practice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 25 – Hebrews 5-11-14 – Trained By Constant Practice – Growing As Disciples

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.  For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14 (ESV)

Constant Practice

What do those words mean to you? I’m not exactly sure what you mean. How will you put my word into constant practice in your life? How will you allow me to teach and train you with my word? How will you allow me to guard and guide you with my word? How will continually allow me to use my word to change the way that you think and speak and act? Do my thoughts and words and actions need changing? What do you think? I think I have asked a dumb question. Why is that? Without your word continually doing its work in my life, I am certain to become dull of hearing. Why is that? Worldly cares and concerns are certain to dull my hearing and divert my focus away from you. Meeting with you daily in your word will help me to remain vitally connected to you. I know that you will use your word to teach and train me. I know that you will use your word to guard and guide me. I know that your word is the tool that you will use to help me think and speak and act in ways that are pleasing to you. I am certain that your word will help me to live a vibrant life of faith that you desire for me. You are correct. But it is never a dumb question to ask yourself if your thoughts or words or actions needing changing. Failing to ask that question would be dumb. Failing to allow me to use my word to mold and shape your life would be a tragic mistake. Of that, I am certain. That is very good.

So, what will constant practice of my word look like in your daily life? There is one appointment I will have on my daily schedule that will be my number one priority, with no close second. I will meet with you daily in your word. I will allow you to use your word to do your work in my life. I will listen attentively to you. My heart and mind and life will be focused on you. Here I am right now, in your word, listening to you. There is no place I would rather be. There is nothing I would rather do. Nothing is more important. Nothing is of greater value. Speak to me Lord. I am listening. Mold and shape me Lord. Help me to life the life you have called me to live. That I will do, of that, you can be certain. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will meet daily with you in your word. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. Teach and train by your word. Guard and guide me with your word. Help me to grow mature in you. Help me to fully live the life you have called me to live. Amen

Key Question…  Why is it vitally important that you never stop allowing God’s word to do its work in you?

Living It Out…  Meet daily with God in His word so you can remain vitally connected to Him.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will use His word to teach and train you so you will grow strong in your faith.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has been using His word to do His work in you.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow God’s word to train the way you think and speak and act.

But Because You Say So

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Word Centered Life - Day 23 - Luke 5-4-11 - But Because You Say So - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 23 – Luke 5-4-11 – But Because You Say So – Growing As Disciples

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”  Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”  When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.  When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,  and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.”  So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:4-11 (NIV)

What I Ask

Will you follow and obey? Will you go and do what I ask of you? Don’t be too quick to answer these questions. Let me ask you some more questions, before you answer me. Go ahead, I’m listening.  Will you follow and obey me when what I am asking of you is difficult and costly? Will you go and do what I ask of you when you don’t completely understand where I am leading you and what I am requiring of you? Must you fully understand and completely agree with me before you follow and obey me? Now, you may answer my questions. I know one thing for certain. What’s that? It is not rare for you to ask me to go and do something that I don’t fully understand. Why is that? You know the future. I do not. You are wise. I am not. You have a purpose and plan for my life that unfolds day by day. If I needed to fully understand and completely agree with what you asked me to go and do for you, I would never take the first step. Why is that? I don’t like leaving my comfort zone. I don’t like trying to do what seems impossible to me. If I saw your entire plan for my life, all at once, I would say that you were asking far too much of me. I would be fearful. I would be timid. I would be filled with doubt and withdraw in defeat, without ever engaging in any battles. So, day by day, you ask me to say yes to you, one step at a time. So, day by day, you ask me to place my faith in you. So, day by day, you do in and through me what I could never do by myself. Isn’t that great? Isn’t that fantastic? Yes, it is. Will you keep on going and doing what I ask of you, even when you do not fully understand where I am leading you and what I am requiring of you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will say yes to you when I do not fully understand what you are asking of me. I will follow you when I am not certain where we are going. I will do what you give me to do based simply on your say so. Speak to me Lord, I am listening attentively to you. Amen

Key Question…  When have you followed and obeyed the Lord even when you were not sure where you were going?

Living It Out…  Say yes to the Lord even when you do not fully understand what He is asking of you.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith to say yes to the Lord even when you don’t fully understand what He is asking of you.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are saying yes to what the Lord asks of you.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you say yes to whatever the Lord asks of you.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 22 – John 8-31-32 – Make You Free – Growing As Disciples

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31-32 (NKJV)

Set Free

Do you believe in me? Are you one of my disciples? Do you want to be set free? Yes Lord, I do believe in you. You are my Savior and Lord. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Yes Lord, I am one of your disciples. I will follow you to wherever you lead me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I am fully devoted to you. I am at your service.  Yes Lord, I want to be set free. Whatever you say to me will be in the forefront of all that I think and say and do. That will be very good.

How will you remain in my word? What steps will you take to make sure that you are remaining in my word? What strategies will you employ so that my word remains in you? I know that you have heard me say this many times, I will meet with you daily in your word. I will allow you to use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. I will carry your word with me throughout my day. I don’t mind hearing you repeat this commitment. I don’t mind hearing you reaffirm your plan. I especially delight in seeing you live out this commitment and implement this plan. Have you noticed how I have been using my word to set you free? Have you noticed how my word has been making you able to resist temptation and stand against evil? Have you noticed that I have been using my word to mold and shape you into the person I have called you to become? Yes Lord, none of this has gone unnoticed by me. For how you are using your word in my life I am thankful and grateful. Keep on using your word to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans in my life. Keep on meeting with me in my word. Keep on listening attentively to me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I believe in you. I am one of your disciples. I will remain in your word. I will allow you to use your word to set me free. Use your word to change everything about me. Use your word to transform my thoughts, words, and actions. Guide my life by your word. Amen

Key Question…  What will you do with God’s word if you are truly a disciple of Jesus Christ?

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will use His word to set you free as you remain in it.

Light To My Path

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- The Word Centered Life - Day 21 - Psalm 119-105 - Light To My Path - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 21 – Psalm 119-105 – Light To My Path – Growing As Disciples

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Light In Darkness

You live in a world filled with darkness. Your life is under constant and unrelenting attack by the thoughts and opinions and values of this sin broken world. If you are not careful you will think and speak and act like everyone else in the world. This is not my plan for you. What is your plan for me? I want you to shine like a star in the universe. I want you to be a bright light that draws others to me. I want you to be able to know my will and walk in my ways. I want you to be able to stand against temptation and fight against evil. I want you to love and follow and serve me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength. How does this sound to you? It sounds very good to me. It is the desire of my heart. Is the goal of my life. That is very good.

None of what I want for you will be fully realized unless you meet with me daily in my word. It is my word that will change your heart and transform your mind. It is my word that will guard and guide the course of your life. It is my word that will shine a bright light on your path through life. It is my word that My Spirit will use to fight in you, with you, for you and through you. It is my word that My Spirit will use to make you able to stand against temptation and fight against evil. You have heard it said that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God? Yes, I know that well. Be very sure that you will often leave yourself defenseless without my word dwelling in your richly. Of that, I am certain. That is very good.

How will you allow my word to guard and guide your life? How will you allow me to use my word to change your heart and transform your mind? How will you allow my word to dwell in you richly so that you will shine brightly like a star in the universe for me? There is only one answer to your question. What is that? I will meet with you daily in your word. I will set aside a time and place to meet with you. Meeting with you will be the priority of my life. I will listen attentively to you. I will carry your word with me throughout my day. I will allow you to use your word to do its work in my life. That will be very good.

Lord, I know this world is full of darkness. I also know I need your word to shed light on my path through life. Daily, I will meet with you in your word. Use your word to guard and guide my life. Use your word to help me to know your will and walk in your ways. Amen

Key Question…  How are you daily meeting with God in His word so He can use it to shed light to your path through life?

Be Careful To Follow

The Word Centered Life - Day 20 - Deuteronomy 8-1-3 - Be Careful To Follow - 4 Page Discipleship Study Guide

The Word Centered Life – Day 20 – Deuteronomy 8-1-3 – Be Careful To Follow – 4 Page Discipleship Study Guide

Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the LORD promised on oath to your forefathers.  Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.  He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Deuteronomy 8:1-3 (NIV)

Live On

What will you live on? What will sustain and strengthen you. What will guard and guide the course of your life? From where will you receive your teaching and training? How will your thoughts and opinions develop? What will help you discern between what is wise and what is foolish? Will you humbly rely on me? Will you rely on yourself or someone else? Those are all very good questions. I will start off by saying that I will not rely on myself or someone else. To do that would be beyond foolish, it would be tragic. Only you are worthy of all my faith and trust. Only you can guard and guide the course of my life. You are the one who will teach and train me. Only you will help me to discern between what is wise and foolish. You will help me to know and do your will. You will mold and shape me by your word. You will use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. It is your word that will form my thoughts and opinions and values. I will live on your word. I will feed on your word. Your word will sustain and strengthen me. You have answered well. Yes, my word will do all these things in you, for you, and through you.

What will you do with my word? How will you allow my word to do its work in you, for you and through you? I will set aside a time and place to meet daily with you in your word. Our time together will be the priority on my schedule. I will make sure that I am hearing and obeying and following your word. I will live on every word that comes from your mouth. I will meditate on your word day and night. I will allow your word to dwell in me richly. All my thoughts, and words, and actions will be guided by your word. With your help, I will live my life according to your word. That will be very good. You will have my help and I will richly bless your life as you live your life according to my word. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, it is my delight to feed on your word. It is my joy to meet with you in your word. Give me an even greater hunger for your word. I will humbly follow and obey every word that comes from your mouth. Sustain, strengthen, and bless my life with your word. Amen

Key Question…  How is feeding on God’s word changing your heart, and transforming your mind?

Living It Out…  Make sure that you are daily feeding on and following God’s word.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will use His word to sustain, strengthen, and bless your life.

Take Care Then How You Hear

The Word Centered Life - Day 19 - Luke 8-16-18 - Take Care Then How You Hear - Growing As Disciples

The Word Centered Life – Day 19 – Luke 8-16-18 – Take Care Then How You Hear – Growing As Disciples

“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.  For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.  Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” Luke 8:16-18 (ESV)

Are You Listening?

I am asking that question of your right now. What question are you asking me? Are you listening? I think so. I would say that I am. I think I am listening to you. What does your listening to me, require of you? If I want to hear from you, I must quiet myself before you. I must remove myself from the noise and busyness and distractions of this world. If I want to hear from you, I must calm myself before you. I must slow down, take a deep breath and rest in your presence. It is you who has said that you will make me lie down in green pastures, beside still waters. It is in this kind of environment that you will make me able to hear from you. It is in this kind of environment that you want me to drink deeply of all you have for me. In this kind of environment, you will make me able to hear all you have to say to me. That is true. That is correct. What else? If I want to hear from you, I must seek you with all my heart. It is you who has said that I will find you when I seek you with all my heart. Hearing from you will require my sharp focus. Hearing from you real require my full attention. Hearing from you will require an all-in effort on my part. That is also true. That is also correct.

What will you do as you come into my presence? What will you do as you quiet yourself before me? What will you do as you seek me with all your heart? I will meet with you in your word. I will hear all that you have to say to me. I will allow you to use your word to set me on fire for you. I will allow you to use your word to cause me to shine brightly for you in the darkness of this world. Yes, I will do this for you. Yes, I will do this in you. Yes, I will do this through you, as you carefully listen to me. You are listening to me and that is very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will be very careful how I hear. I will not allow your word to go in one ear and out the other. My hearing of your word will be demonstrated by my putting it into daily practice. Use your word to set me on fire, so I can shine brightly for you in the world. Amen

Key Question…  How has hearing and putting God’s word into practice helped you to shine brightly for Him?

Living It Out…  Listen carefully to God’s word so that you will be able to put it into practice.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that you will shine brightly for God as you hear and put His word into practice.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how you are being very careful to listen to God’s word.

The Seed In The Good Soil

The Word Centered Life - Day 18 - Luke 8-11-15 - The Seed In The Good Soil - Growing As Disciples

The Word Centered Life – Day 18 – Luke 8-11-15 – The Seed In The Good Soil – Growing As Disciples

“Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God.  “Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.  “Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.  “The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity.  “But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Luke 8:11-15 (NASB)

Take Root

When will you make yourself available to meet with me in my word? I will set a daily time and place to meet with you in your word. I will make meeting with you in your word the priority of my life. Meeting with you in your word will be on my schedule. I will give you the best part of my day to meet with you in your word. How will my word take root in you? I will carry your word with me throughout the days of my life. I will meditate on your word. I will memorize your word. I will keep your word in my heart and mind. Your word will guard the course of my life. How will you make sure that nothing thwarts the growth of my word in you? I will never let anyone or anything crowd you out of my life. What will you guard against? I will make sure that the worries and cares and pleasures and riches of this life do not divert my attention from you and your word. I will focus my heart and mind and life fully on you. What do you expect that my word will do in you, with you, for you and through you? Your word will change my heart. Your word will transform my mind. Your word will guard and guide through life.  You will use your word to mold and shape my life. You will use your word to make me into the person you have called me to become. Your word will make me able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Every thought I think will be formed by your word. Every step I take will be guided by your word. Every move I make will be directed by your word. I will live my life according to your word. That will be true as you allow my word to take root in you. That I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not let anything or anyone thwart the growth of your word in me. I will meet daily with you in your word. I will put your word into daily practice. Make my heart to be like rich soil so that your word will cause me to bear much fruit for your kingdom. Amen

So Then Faith Comes By Hearing

The Word Centered Life - Day 17 - Romans 10-17 - So Then Faith Comes By Hearing - Growing As Disciples

The Word Centered Life – Day 17 – Romans 10-17 – So Then Faith Comes By Hearing – Growing As Disciples

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Listen To Me

I know that I am not the best listener. I know that it could be said that I am hard of hearing. There is nothing physically wrong with my ears. It is the pace my life that has been a part of my problem. Well, to be honest, that is only a part of the problem and a small part of the problem at that. What are the main problems? It is no surprise to me that your question suggests that I have had several significant problems when it comes to listening to you. Thinking that I “know it all” has been a problem. Thinking that I can solve all my own problems and meet all my own needs has been a problem. At many times and in many ways, I have been self-sufficient, self-reliant, and self-centered. Those are not great qualities that are all deeply rooted in pride. It is good and wise that you recognize that these qualities have hindered your ability to listen to me. Yes, with these qualities at work, I have had misplaced priorities. I have chased after and spent a great deal of time on what will be of no value, it light of all eternity. That is another great and wise insight.

How will you reorder your priorities so you can listen to Me? How will you invest your life in what will be of value, in light of all eternity? I will listen attentively to your word. I will allow you word to do its work in me. I will allow you to use your word to teach and train me. I will allow you to use your word to guard and guide me. I will allow you to use your word to mold and shape me. I will allow your word to grow my faith in you.  When and where will you listen attentively to my word? I will set aside a time and place every day to meet with you in your word. Meeting with you in your word will be on my schedule and the highest priority of my life. From our time meeting together in your word, I will carry your word with me throughout my day. Your word will remain in my heart and mind. Your word will be continually on my lips. I will not hesitate to share your word with others so that they also can grow in their faith. I see that you have a plan that is very good. You will never regret the time you spend meeting with me in my word. No, I will not, of that I am absolutely sure. That is very good. Thank you, Lord, for your word.

Lord, I will set aside a daily time to meet with you in your word. I will take your word deep into my heart, mind, and life. Mold my life by your word. Grow my faith in you by your word. Use me to share your word with others so they will also grow in their faith. Amen

Key Question…  Why is it critically important that you listen attentively and daily to God’s word?

Living It Out…  Make it your daily practice to listening attentively to God’s word.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that your faith will grow as you attentively listen to God’s word.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has grown your faith as you have met with Him in His word.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow your faith to grow by attentively listening to God’s word.
