Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 265 – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Have Trained Themselves – Growing As Disciples

We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14 (NIV)

In Training

I know what that means. I know what that is like. You know what means? I know what it is like to be in training. I would like to hear you describe what you think it means to enter into my training? I would be happy to do that. Go ahead, I’m listening. The first and most important part of training is simply showing up. Why is that? A person cannot be trained if they don’t show up and allow the training to begin. How will your training with me begin? I will draw near to you. I will enter into your presence. I will quiet myself before you. I will give all my thanks and praise to you. I will express my worship to you. I will listen attentively to you. I will give you my undivided attention. You will have my full devotion. That will be very good. Are there some practical, observable steps that are part of your entering into my training? Yes, if I will be entering your training, several steps are important. Like what? I must establish a special time and place for us to meet together. I must withdraw from the noise and busyness of life so that I will be able to hear from you. I must make meeting with you the absolute priority of my life. Why is all of this so important? Life is full of demands and distractions. If I don’t carve out a time and place for us to meet, it will likely never happen. It sounds like you have a great deal of experience on this matter. Yes, I have had many good intentions of meeting with you. Without a plan, days and weeks and even months have gone by without our meeting together. My hectic schedule left no time at the end of the day for us to meet together. So now, you are no longer meeting with me when you get around to it? You are not giving me your leftover time? No, I am not. Our meeting together is my highest, consistent and ongoing priority. That is very good.

Do I have a training manual? Have I given you something that will form the basis of your training? Yes, you have given me your word. You will use your word to teach and train me. You will use your word to mold and shape me. You will use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Yes, I will.

Is there some sign of progress that you will be looking for our expecting? How will you know if my training is accomplishing my purpose in you? You will use your word to make me ready to be used by you. Your training will make me able to train others as your followers. Yes, it will. Yes, it has. Let my training in you continue every day until we meet together face to face in heaven. Then your training will be complete. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will enter into your training. I will give my full and complete effort to being trained as your follower. Every day, I will meet with you in your word. Speak to me. Teach and train me. Mold and shape me. Make me mature and ready to be fully used by you. Amen

Trained By Constant Practice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Word Centered Life - Day 25 - Hebrews 5-11-14 - Trained By Constant Practice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 25 – Hebrews 5-11-14 – Trained By Constant Practice – Growing As Disciples

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.  For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14 (ESV)

Constant Practice

What do those words mean to you? I’m not exactly sure what you mean. How will you put my word into constant practice in your life? How will you allow me to teach and train you with my word? How will you allow me to guard and guide you with my word? How will continually allow me to use my word to change the way that you think and speak and act? Do my thoughts and words and actions need changing? What do you think? I think I have asked a dumb question. Why is that? Without your word continually doing its work in my life, I am certain to become dull of hearing. Why is that? Worldly cares and concerns are certain to dull my hearing and divert my focus away from you. Meeting with you daily in your word will help me to remain vitally connected to you. I know that you will use your word to teach and train me. I know that you will use your word to guard and guide me. I know that your word is the tool that you will use to help me think and speak and act in ways that are pleasing to you. I am certain that your word will help me to live a vibrant life of faith that you desire for me. You are correct. But it is never a dumb question to ask yourself if your thoughts or words or actions needing changing. Failing to ask that question would be dumb. Failing to allow me to use my word to mold and shape your life would be a tragic mistake. Of that, I am certain. That is very good.

So, what will constant practice of my word look like in your daily life? There is one appointment I will have on my daily schedule that will be my number one priority, with no close second. I will meet with you daily in your word. I will allow you to use your word to do your work in my life. I will listen attentively to you. My heart and mind and life will be focused on you. Here I am right now, in your word, listening to you. There is no place I would rather be. There is nothing I would rather do. Nothing is more important. Nothing is of greater value. Speak to me Lord. I am listening. Mold and shape me Lord. Help me to life the life you have called me to live. That I will do, of that, you can be certain. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will meet daily with you in your word. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. Teach and train by your word. Guard and guide me with your word. Help me to grow mature in you. Help me to fully live the life you have called me to live. Amen

Key Question…  Why is it vitally important that you never stop allowing God’s word to do its work in you?

Living It Out…  Meet daily with God in His word so you can remain vitally connected to Him.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will use His word to teach and train you so you will grow strong in your faith.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has been using His word to do His work in you.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow God’s word to train the way you think and speak and act.

Anyone Who Lives On Milk

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Life - Hebrews 5:11-14 - Anyone Who Lives On Milk - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Life – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Anyone Who Lives On Milk – Growing As Disciples

Quick To Learn

Do you want to grow up? Do you want to mature in your relationship with me? Do you want to live the life that I have given you to live for me? That’s an easy yes to all three of your questions. I want to grow and mature in my relationship with you. I want to live the life you have given me to live for you. You have a question? Yes, I do. How do I grow mature in my relationship with you? How can I make sure that I really am living the life you have given me to live for you? Are you looking for some great mysterious answer? Are you thinking that I will reveal some hidden secret to you? I don’t know. You will receive neither of those from me. What I will tell you will be simple to hear and easy to understand. That’s great. What I will tell you will also sound like a very easy thing to do. You’re hesitating a little aren’t you? Yes, I am. Why is that? I hear the words, “will also sound like a very easy thing to do”. What you will tell me will sound easy but it may not be easy, is that right? Yes, that’s right. I’m listening. If you want to grow and mature in your relationship with me and live the life I have given you to live you will need to meet with me in my word. You’re right that is quite simple to hear and easy to understand. How often do you want me to meet with you in your word? How quickly do you want to grow and mature in your relationship with me? I’m not sure what you mean. Do you want to be slow or quick to learn? I would like to be quick to learn. Then how often do you want to meet with me in my word? I want to meet with you everyday in your word. Good answer. So, what’s so hard about this? I now know that I want to meet with you everyday in your word. Yes, you do. When and where will we meet? I thought we would have a random time and place where we would meet everyday. I like to be flexible. Scheduling a time and place for us to meet sounds a little too formal to me. So, you’ll fit me in whenever your schedule allows. I wouldn’t say it that way. But, I will definitely meet with you sometime during each and every day. You think so? Yes, I do. Would you like me to save you a lot of time and frustration? Yes, I would. You won’t be meeting with me everyday in my word. I just said that I would. Yes, I heard that. But, you won’t be meeting with me in my word. Do you doubt my sincerity? Do you think that I am lying to you? No, I don’t doubt your sincerity or honesty. Why do you doubt what I am saying? I know that you are fooling yourself. Why is that? Unless you set a time and a place for us to meet it won’t happen. Your days will get full and become busy and soon enough you’ll realize that we aren’t meeting together in my word. You’re positive of this? Aren’t you? I guess you’re right. No, I know that you are right. So, what are you going to do? I’m going to pick a time and place to meet with you in your word. When will it be? I considered several choices. What were they? I thought of before I leave the house in the morning, on my lunch break, after work and before I go to bed at night. What is your choice? Can I pick two? You want to meet twice? Yes, I do. Sure you can. I chose before I leave the house in the morning. Then, we can meet in my home office. I also chose before I go to bed at night. Then we can meet in my bedroom. Those sound great to me. Now, I know that I really will be meeting with you in your word. Yes, you will.

Lord, I’m hungry for your word. I’m receptive to your word. I’m committed to meeting with you in your word. No longer do I want to live like an infant feeding on milk. Teach me with the solid food of your word as I meet with you in it. Amen

Trained By Constant Practice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Hebrews 5:11-14 - Trained By Constant Practice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Trained By Constant Practice – Growing As Disciples

Dull Of Hearing

I don’t want that. What’s that? I don’t want to become dull of hearing. That’s good. What might make you dull of hearing? If I were to neglect your word, I would become dull of hearing. There is zero chance that I will hear your word if I make no attempt to listen to you. That is why it has been and will be my daily pattern and practice to meet with you in your word. I will make myself available to you. I will quiet myself before you. I will listen attentively to your voice. That reminds me of something. What’s that? The world is a noisy place. It is very difficult to hear you over the noise and busyness of life. Yes, it is. I am also reminded of another thought. I’m listening. It is very easy to get caught up in the hurry and hustle of daily life. That’s true. It is because the world is a noisy and busy place that I will set a part a special time and place to meet with you in your word. That will be very good.

What else might cause you to become dull of hearing? If I were to let your word go in one ear and out the other the I will certainly become dull of hearing. I will become dull of hearing if I don’t constantly put your word into practice. That’s true. I’m sure I can know how well I have heard your word by how well I have put it into practice. That’s true. If I were to never put your word into practice, I could be sure that I never really heard your word in the first place. That is also true.

What will help you to grow in your ability to hear my word? If I were to teach others what you have been teaching me, that will help me to grow in my ability to hear your word. Yes, it will. Will you make it your daily habit to meet with me in my word? Will you put my word into your constant practice? Will you teach others what I have been teaching you? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will never become dull of hearing.

Lord, I do not want to be dull of hearing. I want to be able to hear and put your word into constant practice. I will meet with you every day in your word so that I can hear from you. Help me also to teach others all you have been teaching me from your word. Amen

Teaching Others

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Hebrews 5:11-14 - Teaching Others - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Teaching Others – Growing As Disciples

There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. Hebrews 5:11-14 (NLT)

Be Trained

I would like to be able to teach others all that you have been teaching me. I would like to say that I have made progress. I want to continually be making progress as your follower. What kind of progress are you interested in making as my follower? I will tell you one thing. What’s that? I don’t want to be dull of hearing. What will you do about that? I know that the world and all that is in it would like to make me dull of hearing. All the passions, lusts and desires of this world have the potential to make me dull of hearing and slow to listen to you. I don’t want that to describe my life. How do you want your life to be described? I want to be one of your followers who listens attentively to everything you want to say to me. I want there to be no question about my listening to you. I want your word to dwell in me richly. I want to think your thoughts. I want to be able to know and do your will. I want to grow mature in you. I don’t want to remain an infant. Those are all good desires.

How will you grow mature in me? What will you do differently because you want to hear all that I want to say to you? How will you make yourself fully available to me so that I can teach and train you? How will each one of your days look different because you want to make progress as one of my followers? I will set apart a time and a place to meet with you every day. I will withdraw from the noise and busyness of the world so I can hear from you. I will meet with you in your word. I will let your word dwell in me richly. I will allow your word to change my heart. I will allow your word to transform my mind. I will allow your word to guide my life. Then you will be trained. Then you will grow mature. Then I will be able to use you to go and do whatever I ask of you. You will be ready to be used in my service.

Lord, I will eliminate from my life anything that will make me dull in hearing you. I will make myself fully attentive to your word. I will listen very carefully to all that you want to say to me. Make me mature and ready to be used by you. Train me for your service. Amen

Trained Themselves

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- Wisdom - Hebrews 5:11-14 - Trained Themselves - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Trained Themselves – Growing As Disciples

In Training

Are you just plodding along or are you in training? Are you making progress or are you in a rut? Are you moving forward with me or are you lagging far behind me? Have you grown in knowing and doing my will? Are you now able to teach others or are you still needing to be taught the very basics of living your life with and for me. Those are difficult and thought provoking questions. These questions are worthy of your full consideration. I want you to think deeply about each one of them. That, I will do.

What would being in training with you look like? If I wanted to sign up to be in training what would I need to do? Now, you are asking good questions that I will let you answer. If I want to be in training with you I must meet with you. How often? If I want to seriously train with you I must meet with you every day. So, will you set a specific time and a place to meet with me? Is that critically important? You tell me. How has your daily meeting with me, in my word, gone when you have not established a specific time and a place to meet with me? It has gone nowhere. When I have not established a regular time and place to meet with you, it usually doesn’t happen. Why is that? My busy days seem to crowd you out of my life. Days and weeks and sometimes even months have gone by without me meeting with you in your word when I haven’t established a consistent pattern and practice of our meeting together. That’s not good. No, it is not. How much have you grown in your life of faith during these interludes when we have not met together in my word? Not much, maybe not at all. Is that alright with you? No, it is not. I want to grow strong in my faith as I live my life with and for you. That’s good.

Do you want to sign up to be in training with me right now? Is there any reason to delay? Yes, I want to sign up to be in training with your right now. No, there is no reason for any delay. I will pick a time and a place to meet with you daily in your word. I will begin to feast on your word so that you can feed and sustain my life. I will allow you to mold and shape my life with your word. Guard and guide my life with your word. Make me able to teach others how they can live their lives with and for you. Yes, I will.

Lord, I will feed on the solid food of your word. Feed and sustain my life with your word. Use your word to help me to know and do your will. Change my heart and transform my mind with your word. Use your word to strengthen me to do all you ask of me. Amen
