The Lord Gives Wisdom

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 34 - Proverbs 2:1-6 - The Lord Gives Wisdom - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 34 – Proverbs 2:1-6 – The Lord Gives Wisdom – Growing As Disciples

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,  turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,  and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,  and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,  then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.  For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:1-6 (NIV)

Hidden Treasure

I definitely want that and all that comes with it. What is it that you want? I want wisdom and understanding and insight and knowledge. What is it that you most want to know? I want to know you. I want to know your will. I want to know your ways. I want the wisdom and insight and knowledge that can only come from you. You have very good desires within you. Do you believe that I will give you all that you are asking of me? Yes, I believe that you will give me not only what I am asking of you, but I also believe that you will give me what I could not have ever dreamed of or even imagined. That is very good.

What must you do if you want to receive all that I want to give to you? I must accept your word. By accept, I mean I must take your word deep into my heart and mind. I must allow your word to dwell in me richly. I must store up your words within me so that they are always with me. By accept, I also mean that I must be willing to set aside not only my own thoughts and ideas and opinions, but also those of the world. Your word must be and must have final authority in my life. If my thoughts and ideas and opinions are in conflict with yours, I will know who needs to change their thinking. Who would that be? That would be me. Good answer.

How urgently and passionately and fervently must you seek my word if you want to receive all that I want to give to you? I know one thing for certain. What’s that? Your word is more valuable to me than silver or gold or any hidden treasure. All of these will pass way. Your word will endure forever. Yes, it will. So, I will seek your word with all that is within me. I will cry out for your insight and understanding. I will call to you, so I can receive your instruction and follow your guidance. I will wait patiently with you in your word, so you can teach and train and guard and guide the entire course of my life. That will be very good. Yes, it will.

Lord, I will accept and store your word in my heart. I will turn my ears to your wisdom. Your word is more valuable to me than silver, gold or any hidden treasure. Use your word to give me wisdom. Use your word to help me to know and love, follow and serve you. Amen

Key Question… Why is God’s word worth seeking far above silver or gold or searching for hidden treasure?

Living It Out… Accept and store God’s word in your heart so that you can come to know and love, follow and serve Him.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that you will come to know and love, follow and serve God as you accept and store His word in your heart.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are accepting and storing up God’s word within you.

Close The Door

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 44 - Matthew 6:6 - Close The Door - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 44 – Matthew 6:6 – Close The Door – Growing As Disciples

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6 (NIV)

Close The Door

Will you do that? Will I do what? Will you go into your room and close your door so you can pray? Will you leave worldly distractions behind so you can meet with me in prayer? Will you quiet yourself before me? Will you enter my presence? Will you draw near to me so I can draw near to you. Will you focus your heart and mind and life on me so you can hear from me? Will you listen to what I have to say to you? Will you receive my guidance and follow my instruction? Will you allow me to guard and guide your life? Will you turn all your worries into prayers to me? Will you bring all your wants and needs before me? Will you allow me to hear and answer your prayers? You have asked me a lot of questions, for which I have only one answer. What is your answer? My answer is yes, a hundred times yes, a thousand times yes. I will say yes to whatever you ask of me. That will be very good.

Why will it be important for you to set a time and place to meet with me in prayer? Why will it be a very good thing for you to enter your room and close the door so you can pray? Why will it be well worth your time to meet with me in secret? Why will you never regret the time you will spend with me in prayer? If I don’t set a time and place to meet with you in prayer it will never happen. Why is that? Life is busy. Life is distracting. Life clamors for my time and attention. A day without prayer can become a week without prayer, a week without prayer can become a month without prayer, and ultimately months turn into years and years can add up to a lifetime without prayer. That will not happen to me. Why is that? Meeting with you in prayer will be the priority of my life. That will be very good. I know you will hear and answer my prayers. I know you will mold and shape my life as I meet with you in prayer. I know I cannot remain the same as I remain in your presence. You will allow me to think your thoughts, speak your words and take your actions. You will work in and through my life as I live my life in an intimate relationship with you. Yes, I will do all these things for you as you draw near to me. That is what I will continue to do as I close the door and meet with you in prayer. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, I will close my door to the worldly distractions of this life so I can spend time with you in prayer. I know you will hear and answer my prayers. I know you will reward me for the secret time I spend with you in prayer. It is my joy to pray to you. Amen

Key Question… How are you making it your priority to close your door to meet in prayer with your Heavenly Father?

Living It Out… Make it your daily practice to close your door and pray to your Heavenly Father.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that your prayers will be heard and answered as you close your door and pray to your Heavenly Father.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are closing your door and praying to your Heavenly Father.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you close the door to take time to meet your Heavenly Father in prayer.

An Example

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 42 - John 13:14-17 - An Example - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 42 – John 13:14-17 – An Example – Growing As Disciples

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. John 13:14-17 (NIV)

My Example

I have set before you an example. Will you follow my example? Will you pattern your life after mine? Will you do for others what I have done for you? What have you done for me? I do have some knowledge of what you have done for me. I couldn’t be more thankful and grateful for all that you have done for me. Yet, I ask, simply because I would love to hear you tell me the great things you have done for me. It would encourage me to hear you say all that you have done for me. I would be happy to tell you some of the great things I have done for you. Are you listening attentively? You have my full attention. First, I left heaven for you. I gave up and set aside all my rights and privileges as I came into this world for you. I suffered humiliation and rejection and harm for you. I paid for all your sins on the cross. My shed blood made it possible for you to be cleansed of all your unrighteousness. I broke down the barrier that once separated you from God. You are now justified in His eyes. You have now been adopted into His family. You are now a child of God. You have been filled with the Holy Spirit. A place is now being kept and guarded in heaven for you. You have also been enlisted into my service. You can now bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. I have made you able to shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world. Others will be drawn to me because they will see my light and life being lived out in and through you. How is that? That is fantastic. Thank you for all that you have done for me.

I can’t, however, do exactly what you have done for me. What is the essence of what I did for you? You humbled yourself and took on the form of a servant. Keep going. You poured yourself out. You didn’t hold anything back. You gave yourself fully. You held nothing in reserve. That’s right. Can you give yourself to others as a servant? Can you love like I loved? Can you serve like I served? Can you give like I gave? Yes Lord, I can, with all the help I know that you will give me. That will be very good.

Lord, I will follow your example. I will humbly serve others. I will give like you gave. I will serve like you served. I will love like you loved. I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. No one will be beneath my humble service. Use me.  Amen

Key Question… How have your thoughts and words and actions changed as you have followed Christ’s example?

Living It Out… Follow the example that Christ has set before you by humbly serving others.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that your life will be richly blessed as you follow Christ’s example of humbly serving others.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are following Christ’s example by humbly serving others.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you follow the Lord’s example by humbly serving others.

Fight For You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 40 - Exodus 14:13-14 - Fight For You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 40 – Exodus 14:13-14 – Fight For You – Growing As Disciples

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.  The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Fight For You

Would you like me to do that for you? Would I like you to do what for me? Would you like me to fight for you in the battles of life? What is the alternative? You could take matters into your own hands. You could rely solely on yourself. That sounds like a foolish choice to me. Why would it be a foolish choice for you to rely solely on yourself? Why would it be a dumb decision to take matters into your own hands? I have been there. I have done that. What has been the result? When I have taken matters into my own hands, I have usually fought losing battles. I’ve noticed.

Do you believe that I will fight for you in the battles of life? Do you believe that I will be with you to help you? Am I trustworthy? Am I reliable? Can you place all your hope and faith and trust in me? Yes, I believe that you will fight for me in the battles of life. Yes, I believe that you will be with me to help me. You are trustworthy. You are reliable. Yes, I can place all my hope and faith in trust in you. That’s good.

I have two words for you. What two words do you have for me? Prove it. Prove what? Prove that you believe that I will fight for you in the battles of life. Prove that you believe that I will be with you to help you. Prove that you know I am trustworthy and reliable. Prove that you can place all your faith and hope and trust me. I am not going to ask how I can prove all these things to you. Why is that? The answer is obvious. Yes, it is, isn’t it? Nevertheless, tell me the obvious answer. The only way for me to prove that I trust you is to trust you. My trust in you, needs to be demonstrated by my trust in you. That’s right.

What will you be able to do in the battles of life when you place all your faith and hope and trust in me? I will be able to be unafraid. I will be able to stand firm. I will be able to be still. I will be able to watch you fight for me. I will be able to see you lead me in victory. How fantastic will that be? Fantastic beyond words that I can adequately express. Will you trust me? Yes Lord, I will trust you. That will be very good.

Lord, often I have foolishly taken matters into my own hands and ended up fighting losing battles. Help me to learn to rely completely on you. Help me to be unafraid and stand firm as I rely on you to fight with me, for me and through me in all the battles of life. Amen

Key Question… What battle would you like to turn over to Him so that He can fight for you?

Living It Out… Be unafraid and stand firm as you allow the Lord to fight battles for you.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that you can be unafraid and stand firm while the Lord fights a battle for you.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how have stood firm and let the Lord fight a battle for you.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you be unafraid, stand firm, and let the Lord fight for you.

Faith Comes

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 35 - Romans 10:17- Faith Comes - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 35 – Romans 10:17- Faith Comes – Growing As Disciples

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Hearing

I will be very careful about that. You will be very careful about what? I will be careful about what I am hearing. I will be very careful about what I allow myself to hear. I will be very intentional about what I chose to hear. Why is that? What I allow myself to hear will impact my thoughts, opinions and values. What my ears hear, and my mind thinks is not neutral information. What I hear will mold and shape me. What I hear will likely guide the entire course of my life. How so? If I allow my mind to be bombarded by the thoughts, opinions and values of the world, I will most certainly become worldly in my thinking. Then my words and actions will follow suit. I will speak and act worldly. So, you are going to evaluate and limit how much the world speaks into your life? That’s it exactly. I will not allow the world and all that is in it to form the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth or actions of my life. Are there a particularly worldly thoughts you want to be on guard against? Yes, there are. Tell me about them. The world would have me think that I am all I need. I am my own boss. I am my own authority. I can live my life my own way. I certainly shouldn’t want or need the help of anyone else, including you. The world would have me place all my faith in my own efforts.  I have all I need. I am all I need. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. What do you think of these thoughts? These thoughts are far away from your thoughts. Living a life based on these thoughts is a life without faith that leads away from you. I have no desire to live this kind a faithless self-centered life. That’s good.

What will you allow yourself to hear? I will allow myself to hear you word. I will make it my daily pattern and practice to hear your word. Why is that? There is not a day that I don’t need to hear from you. There is not a day that I don’t need to be lifted and encouraged by your word. There is not a day that I don’t need your word to increase and strengthen my faith in you. I know that faith comes by hearing your word. So, I will make hearing your word the absolute priority in my life. I want you to guard and guide me by your word. I want you to mold and shape me by your word. As I come to listen to you, I want to know your thoughts and walk in your ways. I want to live the life you are calling me to live. Then you will keep on hearing my word. Yes, I will. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will be very careful about what I allow myself to hear. I know that what I hear can either increase or decrease my faith in you. I will make it my daily pattern and practice to hear your word. I will listen attentively to you, rather than the world. Grow my faith. Amen

Key Question… How has continually allowing yourself to hear God’s word increased and strengthened your faith in Him?

Living It Out… Allow yourself to hear God’s word on a daily basis so your faith in Him will grow and be strengthened.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that God will grow and strengthen your faith as you continue to hear His word.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how your faith has grown as you have listened to God’s word.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you continually hear the word of God so your faith in Him will grow strong.

God Is With You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 33 - Zephaniah 3:17 - God Is With You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 33 – Zephaniah 3:17 – God Is With You – Growing As Disciples

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

Quiet Me

If I need anything, I surely need that. You surely need what? I need you to quiet me with your love. Tell me more about your need. It seems like the world is spinning out of control. Not only that, and more importantly, I feel like the world around me, my world, the world I live in, is spinning out of control. Why do you feel that way? There is instability and pain and suffering and confusion all around me. It feels like the earth and the people in it, me included, are going through a great shaking. How are you doing personally? I’m hanging on, by that I don’t mean I am barely hanging on or that I am hanging on by a shoestring or just getting by. What do you mean? You are helping me to hold on to you. I feel secure and strong in you. Yet, I have not been left untouched by pain. Life is not free and easy. I am feeling some of the weight of the world. I am carrying some heavy burdens for specific people who are in very painful circumstances. What are you doing with your burdens? How are you praying for people who are in great need? With tears, I am crying out to you. It feels like I am living in constant intercession for those who are in need all around me. Then this is a new place for you, isn’t it? Yes, for me to be praying nearly constantly is something new. Even when I am not praying with my own conscious thoughts and words, it feels like your Spirit is praying with groans within me. That is exactly what my Spirit is doing within you.

What do you need to do right now? I need to come to you. I need to draw near to you. I need to come into your presence. I need to take shelter with you in this storm. I need you to protect me. I need you to strengthen me. I need you to keep on quieting me with your love. What do you know? You are my Savior. You have saved me. You will save others as I bring them to you. Yes, I will. You will comfort me. You will keep on quieting me with your love. You delight in me. You are rejoicing over me with singing. You will help me through these turbulent times. You will come to my aid. You will hear and answer my prayers. I am not alone. You are with me to help me. Yes, I am with you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will hear and answer your prayers. Keep on living in this place of intercession that I have brought you. I am doing a work in and through you. Rejoice and give thanks and praise to me, as I lead you through these turbulent times. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for saving me and making me able to know and love you. It is amazing to learn that you delight in me. Help me to be quieted by your love. The idea that you rejoice over me with singing is astounding. Help me to give all thanks and praise to you. Amen

Key Question… How has living in a love relationship with God quieted you, even when chaos reigned around you?

Living It Out… Allow the love of the Lord to quiet you so that you can know that He is powerfully present with you.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord is powerfully present with you at all times.

Race Marked Out For Us

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 38 - Hebrews 12:1-3 - Race Marked Out For Us - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 38 – Hebrews 12:1-3 – Race Marked Out For Us – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

Throw Away

You will need to show me that. I will need to show you what? That is a good question. Initially, I was thinking that you would need to show me one thing. Now, I think you need to show me several things. Let’s start with the first one. First, I need help to see anything that might hinder me from running well on the course that you have laid out for me. What do you have in mind? The phrasing of your question is interesting. Why is that? I’m sure that I have thought patterns that will hinder me from running well. It is my thoughts that will become my words. It is my thoughts and words that will dictate my actions. My thoughts and words and actions will define the kind of life I will live. If I hope to run well, my thoughts and words and actions will need to be in alignment with you. That is true. So, I will start by asking you to throw off any thought or word or action that will hinder me from running well on the course that you have laid out for me. That is a very good prayer to pray. That is a prayer that I will hear and answer. How do you suppose I will help you to have your thoughts and words and actions in alignment with mine? Well, you have given me some examples to follow. Tell me more about that. I have a great cloud of witnesses that surround me. What do you mean by that? Men and women of faith have gone before me. Men and women of faith are all around me. I can follow their example. I can do what they did. What did they do? They kept their heart and mind and life focused on you. Yes, they did. Will their example spur you on? Will their example encourage you to run strong and finish well in your race of faith? Yes, it will. So, I will ask you to help me to follow the examples of the great cloud of witness that have gone before me and are all around me right now. I will also ask you to help me to keep my heart and mind and life focused on you so I can run well and finish strong. Those are also good prayers to pray that I will hear and answer. Keep your heart and mind and life focused on me as you run the race I have set before you. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, my eyes are on you. I will not look back or around. My entire focus will be on you. I will throw off anything that will hinder my running. Help me to run well the race you have marked out for me. I want to finish strong in the race you have given me to run. Amen

Key Question… What will hinder or help you from running the race that the Lord has marked out for you?

Living It Out… Run with perseverance the race that the Lord has marked out for you.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord has marked out a race for you to run.

Find Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 31 - Jeremiah 29:13- Find Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 31 – Jeremiah 29:13- Find Me – Growing As Disciples

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

Seek You

That is what I will do. What will you do? I will seek you with all my heart. Why will you seek me with all your heart? That is a very good question. Do you have an answer? Yes, I will seek you with all my heart because I want to know you. I don’t want to know about you. I actually want to know you. I don’t want to know you a little bit. I want to know you intimately. I want to know your thoughts. I want to know your ways. I want to know your purposes and plans. I want to know anything and everything I can about you. I will seek you with all my heart so I can find you. That will be very good.

What will happen to you as you seek me with all your heart? I will be changed. How so? Day by day, as I seek you, as I come into your presence, as I draw near to you, I will be changed. I can’t remain the same as I come to know you. Your words will be come my words. Your thoughts will become my thoughts. Your actions will become my actions.  You will make me to be more and more like you as I spend time with you. Yes, I will. As I come to know you, I will come to love you, as I come to love you, I will come to follow you. As I come to follow you, I will come to serve you. That will be very good.

How will you seek me with all your heart? Your thoughts alone, without actions, will not be enough. Your desires must be into practice. How will you make seeking me the priority of your life? I will set a time and secure a place to meet with you. In our time together, I will draw near to you in prayer. I will draw near to you in worship. I will draw near to you in your word. I will draw near to you in fellowship in your body, the church. I will draw near to you in service as I follow you to wherever you lead me and to do whatever you ask of me. No matter where I am going, no matter what I am doing, my heart and mind and life will be attentive to you. Speak to me, I am listening. Show yourself to me, I am watching. Help me to know and love and follow and serve you as I seek you with all my heart. Yes, I will, without a doubt, you can be sure it that. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, it will be my daily practice to seek you with all my heart. I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you. I want to find you. I want to know you. I want to love and follow you. Show yourself to me. Guard and guide and bless my life as I seek you. Amen

Living And Active

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 29 - Hebrews 4:12 - Living And Active - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 29 – Hebrews 4:12 – Living And Active – Growing As Disciples

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

Living And Active

I’m glad that your word is living and active. I’m also happy that your word is powerful and effective. Why is that? Your word is just as relevant today as when it was first written. I can’t tell you the number of times something from your word jumped off the page and has spoken powerfully into my life. How has my word spoken into your life? Your word has changed everything about me. You have used your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Your word has made me able to think your thoughts and walk in your ways. Your word has helped form the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and the deeds of my life. Your word has led me where you wanted me to go. Your word has given me what you wanted me to do. Yes, my word has done all these things for you.

How has my word been guarding, guiding and protecting your life? Your word has been like a sword fighting in me, with me, for me and through me. Give me an example. Let’s say that I have had a thought in mind that involves a certain course of action. Over time, I might have rationalized my particular thought and determined my course of action. Your word has often cut right through my rationalizations and shown me that my course of action was not good or right or pleasing to you. Your word has stopped me in my tracks. Your word has changed my course. Your word has prevented me from doing what was not your will. That’s good. How about giving me another example. Let’s say that I have been under attack by the devil and all his evil. A thought process and taking an evil action is before me. My thoughts and actions are hanging in the balance. I could go either way. I could succumb to temptation and evil or I could resist temptation and fight against evil. Your word has come to my defense. Your word has come to my aid. Your word has been in my heart and on my mind. Your word has fought for me against the devil and all his evil that was all around me. Your word has made me able to say no to the devil and yes to you. Your word has made me able to live the life you have called me to live. That is very good. Yes, it is and for that I am very thankful.

Lord, I will listen attentively to your word. I will allow your word to mold and shape me. I will allow your word to guard and guide the course of my life. I will allow your word to change my heart and transform my mind. Speak to me Lord, I am listening to you. Amen
