Immovable

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - 1 Corinthians 15:58 - Immovable - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – 1 Corinthians 15:58 – Immovable – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)

Tried And Tested

I have given you work to do for me. I have called you into my service. The work that I will give to you will not be easy. The work that you will do for me will require your full attention and very best effort. You will be tried and tested by the work you will do for me. How so? You will think that I have asked you to do what you cannot do. Will I be wrong? That is a very good and wise question. You will not be wrong. Let me get this straight, you will ask me to do work I cannot do for you? That is right. Why is that? The work that I will give you to do for me will cause you to rely on me. Is that a test? You mentioned that I would be tried and tested. Yes, I did. Your first test will ask you to rely on me to go and do the work I will give you to do. That seems like two tests. How so? I will be tested to see if I will be willing to do your work and if I will rely on you to do it. That’s right. Are you speaking from experience? You know that I am. There have been many times that I have tried to go and do your work solely with my own strengths, talents and abilities without relying on you. How has that worked out for you? Relying solely on my strengths, talents and abilities to do your work has been an unfruitful endeavor that has left me depressed, depleted and defeated. Under those circumstances, I have given up and quit. So, to pass this first test I need to say yes to what you ask of me and rely on you to make me able to do the work you have given me to do for you. That’s right.

Will I face any more tests when I am doing your work? Yes, you will. Did I mention that my work would be hard? Yes, you did. My work will be hard enough that you will be tempted to quit. You will face uncertainty. You will experience set-backs. You will feel discouraged and defeated. You will wonder if your work will ever bear fruit for my kingdom. You will doubt that you are bringing glory to my name. You must keep on going. You must keep on doing my work. You will need to hold on to me as I hold on to you. I will sustain and strengthen you. You will bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Your labor for me will never be in vain. Will you pass this test? Will you keep on serving me? Yes Lord, with your help I will keep on following and serving you. Good answer.

Lord, thank you for giving me work to go and do for you. I know that the work you have given me to do will not be easy. I know your work will require my best effort. I will not grow weary. I will not quit. Sustain and strengthen me to keep on doing your work. Amen

Always Full Of Grace

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Colossians 4:5-6 - Always Full Of Grace - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Colossians 4:5-6 – Always Full Of Grace – Growing As Disciples

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV)

Doors Of Opportunity

Do you want to live the life that I have called you to live? Do you want to make the wisest use of your time? Do you want to live a life that is attractive to others? Do you want to have opportunities to be used by me? Do you want to be able to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name? Yes, I want to be used by you. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. I don’t want to waste one second of my life. I want to live a life that is attractive to others. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That’s very good.

What will help or hinder these desires being fulfilled in my life? That is a very good question. Nothing will waste your time more than acting foolishly and speaking gracelessly. No one is attracted to foolish actions and graceless words. Nothing will hinder your ability to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name than acting foolishly and speaking gracelessly. I want to live wisely and speak graciously. Living wisely and speaking graciously will stand out in the word. People are drawn to wise actions and gracious words. Wise actions and gracious words will open doors of opportunity to you. People will want to know why you are wise and gracious. They will want to know the source of your wisdom and graciousness. On my own I cannot act wisely and speak gracious. Wisdom and grace are not in me. Why do you say that? So often, I have acted foolishly and spoken gracelessly. To act wisely and speak graciously, I will need your help. Yes, you will. Humbly coming to me to admit that you need my wisdom and grace is the beginning of wisdom. Relying on yourself is a continuation of foolishness. Relying on yourself for wisdom and grace is a big waste of your time. I’m sure of that. That’s very good.

I will guide you to act wisely as you rely on me. I will give you words of wisdom to speak as you rely on me. As you act wisely and speak graciously you will make the most of your time. Your life will not go to waste. People will be drawn to me through your life as you act wisely and speak graciously. I will use your life to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name as you act wisely and speak graciously. That is what I want. That is what I will give to you as you rely on me.

Lord, I have often acted and spoken foolishly with words that were graceless. I know that, no one is attracted to foolish actions and graceless words. Help me to act wisely and speak graciously so I can bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Filled

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 5:6 - Filled - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Matthew 5:6 – Filled – Growing As Disciples

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6 (NKJV)

Desire

There is something that I want to ask of you. There is something that I want you to give me. There is something that I will not stop asking of you. What’s that? I want you to fan the flame of my passion for you. I want a hunger and thirst for righteousness to burn white hot in me. I want to be fully devoted to you. I want to be completely on fire for you. I want to shine brightly for you like a star in the universe. I want to be a bold witness for you in the world. I want others to be drawn to you because they will have seen that you are living in and though my life. I want my life to be well used by you. I want you to send me to wherever you want me to go. I want you to ask me to do whatever you want me to do for you. In every way, I want to live my live with and for you. I am your servant. I am at your disposal. That is very good.

Where do you think these desires in your heart have come from? Who do you think has put these requests in your mind? Do you think that these desires of your heart and these requests from your mind originate with you? Well, I can tell you for certain that these desires of my heart and requests of my mind do not come from me. I am certain that all these desires and requests originate with you. That’s right. Why do you think it is important for you to know that both your desires and your requests originate with me? If my desires and my requests originate with you that means it is your will, purpose and plan that I have these desires and requests in my heart and mind. That’s right. If it is my will, purpose and plan that you have these desires and requests what are the chances that I will hear and answer them for you? If you give me a desire, you will grant me a desire. If you give me a request, you will answer my request. Are you sure about that? Yes, I am sure about that. I have no doubt in my heart and mind. That is very good. What will you continue to do with these desires and requests? I will keep on praying them to you. I will keep on asking you to answer them. That will be very good.

Lord, I have this hunger and thirst within me burning like a fire. I am consumed with desire for you. I am filled with passion to live my life with and for you. I want to live the life you have called me to live. I want to go where you guide me to do all you ask of me. Amen

Transformed

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Romans 12:2 - Transformed - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Romans 12:2 – Transformed – Growing As Disciples

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Renewed Mind

I want to know you. I want to know your thoughts. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want all my thoughts and words and deeds to be guided by you. In every way, I want my life to be a living sacrifice that is fully pleasing to you. How can I know your will and walk in your ways? What will help and hinder me from doing what is pleasing to you? How can I be strengthened to know and do your will? The desires of your heart are pleasing to me. The questions of your mind are very good.

I have broken the power of sin and the world over your life. You have turned away from your sin and the world to follow and serve me. You have left your old life behind. You are now living the new life that I have given you to live. That’s the good news. What’s the bad news? Even though you are not of the world, you are still living in the world. The world is a very powerful and evil force. Every day, you are being bombarded with the thoughts and opinions of the world. The world will never stop trying to conform you into it’s pattern of values and practices. If you do nothing you will be allowing yourself to be conformed to the world. You will think like the world thinks. You will speak like the world speaks. You will act like the world acts. You will not know my will. You will not walk in my ways. You will not do what is pleasing to me. In no way will you stand out as being different from the world. You will not shine brightly for me. You will not be a witness for me in the world. All of this is very bad news. Yes, it is. But, none of this will be true of you.

Day by day I will be renewing and transforming your mind. You will know my thoughts. You will walk in my ways. You will be able to know and do my will. How will all of this be possible? How will you do this work in me? How will you work through me? You will meet with me in my word. You will set apart a time and a place where we will meet together. You will live in an intimate relationship with me. Day by day, you will draw near to me and I will draw near to you. You will listen attentively to all that I have to say to you. You will hear and treasure my word. You will take my word into your heart and mind and life. My word will feed and sustain you. My word will strengthen and empower you. My word will transform you. You will put my word into practice as you love, follow and serve me.  Yes Lord, I will. Then all of these things will be true of you. Then you will know and do my will.

Lord, at one time my mind was under the influence of the world. My thoughts, words and deeds were conformed to the world. You broke the power of the world over me. Now, use your word to renew and transform my mind so I can know and do your will. Amen

Your Servant

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 23:11-12 - Your Servant - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Matthew 23:11-12 – Your Servant – Growing As Disciples

The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:11-12 (NIV)

Serving

Have you humbled yourself? Have your set aside your privileges and expectations. Have you let go of your rights? Have you given up on your demands? How do you regard yourself? Have you thought of yourself as being better and more important than others? Have you exalted yourself and all your wants and needs and desires above anyone, above all else? Those are tough questions. Why is that? I cannot give myself a passing grade on any of your questions. I have been filled with pride. I have carried my rights, privileges, expectations and demands around with me like a set of well-worn luggage. That’s a heavy load to carry. Yes, it is. Worse than that, I have thought of myself as being better and more important than others. I have wanted all my wants and needs and desires to be met while I have barely thought of the wants and needs and desires of those around me. That’s not good. It is more than not good, it is pathetic. Yes, it is.

What has happened to you as a result of your pride? That’s a good question. A prideful, self-centered, self-exalting, self-indulgent life is not sustainable. A prideful life coming to a humbling crash is as predictable as gravity bringing a heavy object back down to earth. You have been humbled? You have been brought back down to earth? Yes, I have experienced the error of my ways. I have suffered for my sinful pride. I have been brought far lower than I have ever exalted myself. Are you sure? No, I’m not sure. That’s good.

There is one thing of which I am sure. What’s that? I no longer want to live a prideful, self-centered, self-exalting, self-indulgent life. There is no joy in that. This is not the life that you have called me to live. No, it is not. You have given me an example to follow. You humbled yourself. You gave up all your rights and privileges, demands and expectations. Yes, I did. You considered others as better than yourself. You did not think about all your wants and needs and desires. No, I did not. You came into this world to give of yourself. You held nothing back. You kept nothing in reserve. You joyfully laid down your life to serve others. You fulfilled the purpose and plan that your Heavenly Father had for your life. Yes, I did. You never retreated from your call. You had no regrets for how you lived your life. No, I did not. That is what I want. I want to follow your example. I want to do what you did. I want to love like you loved, give like you gave and serve like you served. I will humble myself. I will listen for your call. I will humbly go and do all that you ask of me. I will live my serving others. That will be every good.

Lord, I have been proud. I have thought of myself as being more important than others. I have put myself first. I have exalted myself and all my wants, needs and desires. Forgive me. Help me to follow your example. I will humble myself so I can serve others. Amen

Called

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - 1 John 3:1-3 - Called - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – 1 John 3:1-3 – Called – Growing As Disciples

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 1 John 3:1-3 (NIV)

Like Him

You are my child. I sought you out. I chased you down. I have called you by name. I have lavished you with my love. I sent my Son to die on the cross so that you could be forgiven of all your sins and cleansed of all your unrighteous. Though your sins were like scarlet, you have been made new and fresh and clean, as white as snow. When I look at you I don’t see your sin. You are covered by my Son’s righteousness. The distance between us has been bridged. My Son has made it so you can live in a close and intimate relationship with me. My Son has broken the power of sin over your life. He has made it so you can throw off the dirty, stinky clothes of your old life. I am giving you new thoughts to think. You can come to me. You can know my will and walk in my ways. I am using my word to change your heart. Instead of allowing yourself to be conformed to this word, you are allowing my word to transform your mind. My Son has made it so you can now put on the clothes of your new life. I am leading you. I am teaching you. I am training you. You are the work of my hands. You are my masterpiece. Don’t become discouraged at your progress. Don’t grow weary. Never give up. Day-by-day, I will be molding and shaping your life. Day-by-day, I will be making you to be more like my Son. I will keep on working in and through your life until the day that you come to meet me face to face. I will make you able to accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans. My hand will be on you. I will be blessing your life. Your life will bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom. Your life will bring glory to my name. Your life will shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world.

How does all this sound to you? It is beyond what I could have hoped for or even imagined. You are my God and Father. You are my Savior and Lord. You are all that I will ever need. I am your child. You are holding on to me as I hold on to you. You are drawing near to me as I draw near to you. Yes, I am. Keep on loving, following and serving me. Yes, I will.

Heavenly Father, thank you for lavishing your love on me and calling me to be your child. Thank you for making me to be more like your son, Jesus Christ. Keep on changing my heart, transforming my mind and guiding my life until I see you face to face. Amen

Pure And Blameless

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Philippians 1:9-11 - Pure And Blameless - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Philippians 1:9-11 – Pure And Blameless – Growing As Disciples

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11 (ESV)

Ready

Do you want to be able to know and do my will? Do you want to live the life that I have called you to live? Do you want to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name? Do you want to be prepared to meet me face to face? Do you want to go and do what is pleasing to me?  Yes, of course I want all these things. It my earnest prayer that I will one day hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” to me. I don’t want to miss the mark. I don’t want to wander around in the dark. I don’t want to stumble through life. I don’t want to come up short. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. Nothing would please me more that to know that I am living a life that is pleasing to you. Yes, I want to be eager and ready for that day when I will meet you face to face. That is very good.

What must I do to know and do your will? What must I do to live the life that you have called me to live? How can I live a fruitful life that is pleasing to you? You must follow me. You must live in an intimate relationship with me. You must become like me. You must love like I love. You must give like I gave. You must serve like I served. You must live like I lived. Follow me. Follow my example. Ask me for help. Rely on me. Ask for my love, knowledge and discernment to fill you. Then you will be able to know and do my will. Then you will go where I guide you. Then you will do what I ask of you. Then you will be ready to meet me face to face. Then you will certainly hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Then you will know with certainty that you have lived a life that was pleasing me. That is what I want. That is what I will do. I will follow you. I will listen to your voice, I will hear your instructions. I will follow your guidance. That will be very good.

Lord, I pray I will be filled with your love, knowledge, and discernment so I will know and do your will. Help me to live the life you are calling me to live. Help me to live a righteous and fruitful life that bears fruit for your kingdom and brings glory to your name. Amen

A Light

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 5:14-16 - A Light - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Matthew 5:14-16 – A Light – Growing As Disciples

“You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand so the light shines for all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 (NCV)

Shine Brightly

I want to shine brightly for you in this dark world. I want others to see your good work in and through my life so clearly that they will give all the glory to you. I don’t want anything to obscure the light of you shining in and through my life. You have some questions for me, don’t you? You have something on your mind you want to ask me, is that right? I do have something on my mind. I do have something I want to ask you. I want to know how brightly can I shine for you? Is wanting to shine brightly for you, with something like the brilliance of a star in the universe, a form of pride? I don’t want to shine dimly for you, like a single candle. I want to shine as brightly for you as you will allow me to shine for you. I want your light shining brightly in and through my life to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and to bring glory to your name. I don’t want to hinder your light shining in and through my life. You are asking unusual questions. What do you mean by that? Not a lot of people ask me how brightly can they shine for me. Not many people give shinning brightly for me much thought. Why do you think you are asking me these questions? I will tell you one thing that is certain. What’s that? I didn’t dream up the desire to shine brightly for you. It wasn’t in my plan to want to bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name. These desires have not come from within me, that is for sure. Yet, the desire to shine brightly for you, bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name burns like a fire within me. That’s very good.

These desires that burn in your heart should tell you something. Like what? You already know that they did not come from yourself. Where did these desires of your heart come from? They came from you. Yes, they did. I have given you the desire to shine brightly for me. I have given you the desire to bear fruit for my kingdom. I have given you the desire to bring glory to my name. All these desires come from me. I have placed all these desires in your heart. What does that tell you? You have given and you will grant me these desires you have placed in my heart. Yes, I will. You would not have placed these desires in my heart if you had no intention of granting them. That’s right.

What will you keep on doing to shine brightly for me? What will you keep on doing to bear fruit for my kingdom? What will you keep on doing to bring glory to my name? I will keep on loving, following and serving you. I will keep on going where you guide me. I will keep on doing all that you ask of me. That will be very good. Then all these desires of your heart will be fulfilled.

Heavenly Father, I want to live as a light. I want to do good works that shine brightly in the darkness of this world. Help me to go to where you guide me to do all that you ask of me. Use my life to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

My Disciple

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 9:9 - My Disciple - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Matthew 9:9 – My Disciple – Growing As Disciples

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9 (NLT)

Your Journey

Do you want to be my disciple? Yes, I want to be your disciple. What must I do since I want to be your disciple? That is a very good question. I have a very simple answer for you. If you want to be my disciple, you will follow me. Follow you, where will I follow you? You will follow me to wherever I lead. Will I know in advance where we are going? No, you will not. That will be a challenge. Why is that? I like to know where I am going. I like having a road map. I like to know my destination before I start my journey. You will have all those desires fulfilled as you follow me. How so? You are going to wherever I lead you. I will be your guide. I will be your road map. Your destination will be sure and certain. What is my destination? Your journey of following me will end in heaven. Heaven is your destination. Heaven is where you will come to live forever with me. That will be fantastic. You have no idea. It will be far better than you could possibly ever begin to think or imagine. I will be looking forward to that day. Yes, you will and that will be very good.

Being my disciple will require more than just following me. What else will being your disciple require of me? In addition to following me, you must also do what I ask of you. What will you ask of me? I will ask you to do thousands of things as you follow me. Some things, I will ask of you will be simple and easy to do. Other things, that I ask of you will be complicated and difficult to do. There will even be times when I will ask you to do what is impossible. Why would you do that? I want you to learn to trust me. I want you to place all your faith in me. I want you to come to rely on me rather than on yourself. I want you to live in a moment by moment intimate relationship with me. I want you to know that I am working in and through your life. I want you to know that I am allowing you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Will you do whatever I ask of you? Will you allow me to work in and through your life? Yes Lord, I will. You will be my follower. You will be my disciple. You will be my witness in the world. I am looking forward to my journey of following and serving you. That will be very good.

Lord, I will leave everything to be your follower. There is nothing from my old life I desire more than you. I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. Change my life and make me to be your disciple as I follow you every day of my life. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – James 1:5-8 – Sure – Growing As Disciples

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do. James 1:5-8 (NLT)

Just Ask

If I need wisdom? Is that a joke or a trick question? Why do you say that? There is no “if” about it. I desperately need wisdom. I don’t need just a little bit of wisdom here and there. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t need wisdom. What has convinced you of that fact? I have made so many mistakes. I have taken so many missteps. I have gone left when I should have gone right. I have stayed put when I should have moved forward. I have started when I should have stopped. Life and all it difficulties and trails has shown me one thing. What’s that? I desperately need wisdom. I don’t need the best wisdom that the world offers either. What’s wrong with worldly wisdom? I have more than enough worldly wisdom. My abundance of so called worldly wisdom is what has led to my many mistakes and missteps. Worldly wisdom stands in direct opposition to you. Worldly wisdom is sinful, self-centered, and self-sufficient. Worldly wisdom has led me to think that I can rely on myself. Worldly wisdom has convinced me that I don’t need to come to you to ask you for your wisdom. That is a terrible mistake. Yes, I know that now. At least you have learned that you need my wisdom. Yes, I have no doubts about that. That’s good.

So, I’m going to live my life differently. How so? I am not going to rely on myself. I am not going to proudly think that I have all the wisdom that I need. I am going to confess and admit that I desperately need your wisdom. That is a good start. I’m not stopping there. Tell me more. I am going to come to you every day to ask you for your wisdom. Some days I’m even going to ask you to show me what kind of wisdom I need. What do you mean by that? There will be days, I’m sure, when I won’t even know how to pray for wisdom. I will need your wisdom to even know how to pray. Yes, you will. I will guide your prayers. I believe that you will guide my prayers. What else do you believe? I believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. I believe that you will generously give me all the wisdom I will need when I come and ask you for it. Yes, I will. You can be sure of that. Thank you so much for hearing and answering my prayers for wisdom.

Lord, the difficulties and trials of life have clearly shown to me that I lack wisdom. I cannot rely on myself. I desperately need your help. I do believe that you will hear and answer my prayer. I do believe that you will generously give me all the wisdom I need. Amen
