Be Holy

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 107 - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Be Holy- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 107 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Be Holy – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16 (NIV)

Like You

How will I be able to prepare my mind? What will make my mind ready for action? What will help me to be self-controlled? How can I set my mind on all that I have in you? How can I be obedient? How can I make sure that I am not conforming to evil that is in the world? How can I become like you? These sound like impossible tasks. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you begin to follow and serve me? How did you turn away from your old life? What made you tell me that you wanted me to be your Savior and Lord? You showed me your love. You called me to come to you. You drew me near to you. You turned my life around. You turned my life upside down. I would have said that my beginning to love, follow and serve you was most unlikely. Would you say that I began a good work in you? Would you agree that I have been changing your heart and mind and life? Do you closely resemble the person you once were? You definitely began a good work in me. You certainly have been changing my heart and mind and life. I am unrecognizable from the person I was before I started loving, following and serving you. So yes, you have been and are doing a good work in me. That’s right.

Who will you look like as you love, follow and serve me? I will look like you. How so? As I draw near to you, I will begin to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. As I live in your presence, I begin to be holy in all that I think and say and do. Will this take a gigantic and herculean effort on your part? Have I set you up with an impossible task? No, this will not take a gigantic and herculean effort on my part. Why is that? I want to become like you. I want to live as you lived. I want to do what you did. I want to think, and speak, and act in ways that are pleasing to you. It is the desire of my heart to become like you. I want to be holy in all that I think and say and do. That is very good. This is the work that I am doing in you. I will make you able to do all that I ask of you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will prepare my mind for action. I will be self-controlled. I will set my hope on all I have in you. I will not allow my heart and mind and life to conform to evil in the world. Instead, it will be my utmost desire to be holy, like you, in all I think, say and do. Amen

Prepare Your Minds For Action

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - 365 Days Of Guidance - Day 20 - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Prepare Your Minds For Action - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – 365 Days Of Guidance – Day 20 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Prepare Your Minds For Action – Growing As Disciples

Your Mind

How will you prepare your mind for action? Whatever I set my mind on will determine the action I will be prepared to take. What do you mean by that? If I set my mind on my job, then I will be preparing myself to be successful in my career. If I set my mind on power and prestige and position, then I will be preparing myself to do whatever it takes to get ahead. If I set my mind on comfort and pleasure, then I will be preparing to seek fleshly desires. If I set my mind on material possessions. then I will be preparing myself to acquire all that this world has to offer. Are any of these pursuits worthy of setting your mind on? What do you mean by that? Will you allow any of these pursuits to determine who you are and what you will become? Are you going to allow yourself to be defined by any of these things? Those are life-changing questions. Yes, they are depending on how you answer them.

What do you want to set your mind on? What action do you want to be prepared to take? Who do you want to become? What do you want your life to look like? I want to set my mind on you. I want to set my mind on the hope that I have in you, both now and forever. I have said goodbye to my old life. Nothing from my old life is worth setting my mind on. I don’t want to live for comfort and pleasure. I’m not drawn to power, prestige, and position. I’m not attracted to all false treasures and riches that the world has to offer. It would be a fool’s errand to live for what I could only temporarily acquire. Yes, it would. I want my mind to be ready for action. What action? I want my mind to be prepared for whatever action you ask me to take. I want to know and do your will. I want to wholeheartedly live the life that you have called me to live. I want my life to conform to your purposes and plan. How will you know if you are on the right track? You have called me to be holy. You want me to become like you. Yes, that’s right. As you daily make me more like you, I will notice that. Yes, you will. That is my hope. That is my desire. That is my plan. That is my goal. That is very good.

Lord, thank you for the hope I have in you. Help me to set my mind on you. Prepare my mind for action. I will no longer think and live my life in conformity to the world. Change my heart and transform my mind so I can live the holy life you have called me to live. Amen

Key Question…  What will hinder your mind from being prepared and ready for action as a follower of Jesus Christ?

Living It Out…  Allow the Lord to change your mind and prepare you for action as you love, follow, and serve Him.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will change your mind and prepare you for action, as you love, follow, and serve Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has changed your mind and prepared you for action.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you set your mind on Christ so your mind can be prepared for action.

Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled

The Virtuous Life - Day 193 - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 193 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled – Growing As Disciples

Mindset

What is your mindset? I’m not sure what you mean by that question. What is your mind set on? What are you allowing yourself to think? That is a very important question, I would guess. You would be guessing correctly. Your mindset will direct the course of your life. All your thoughts and words and actions will flow out of your mindset. All your opinions and values will be come from your mindset. If your mind is set on worldly things, you will then think and speak and act in worldly ways. All the conduct and character of your life will be guided by your mindset. Now, do you understand the importance of your mind set? Yes, I do. You have made that quite clear to me. That’s good.

I know that you want to become like me. I know that you want to think and speak and act in ways that are pleasing to me.I know that you want to be holy just as I am holy. Am I correct? Are these the true desires of your heart and mind and life? Yes, you know the desires of my heart. I am also confident that you have placed these desires in me. They have come to me as a great and gracious gift, from you to me. I also know that you have and are continuing to fan the flame of these desires in me. Yes, I am. It is wise that you recognize what I have, am, and will continue to do in you. The only wisdom that I have comes from you. That is also true.

Will you continue to set your heart and mind and life on me? Will you keep on turning away from worldly thoughts from this world? Will you continue to allow me to prepare your mind for action so that you will be able to think and speak and act like me? Will you allow me to make you into a bold and bright witness for me in the darkness of this world? Yes Lord, I will. I will draw near to you. I will submit my heart and mind and life to you. The focus of my attention will be on you. I will listen attentively to you. I will live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. I will go where you guide me. I will do what you ask of me. That will be very good. Then the desires of your heart, and mind and life will be fulfilled. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will prepare my mind for action. I will set my heart and mind and life on all the hope that I have in you. Help me to be self-controlled. Help me to think and speak and act like you. Help me to be holy in all I think, say, and do. Make me to be like you. Amen

Key Question…  How is setting your mind on Christ helping you to be holy in all you think, say, and do?

Living It Out…  Set your heart and mind and life on Christ so you can become like Him in all your thoughts, words, and actions.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will help you to be holy in all that you think and say and do.

God Who Chose You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 214 - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - God Who Chose You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 214 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – God Who Chose You – Growing As Disciples

So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.  So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.  But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.  For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16 (NLT)

Become Like Me

I want that for you. What do you want for me? I want you to become like me. I want you to think and speak and act like me. I chose you. You are my child. I am your Heavenly Father. What father does not want his child to become like him? I am Holy. I chose you to become holy like me. That is a high calling. That seems like an impossible task. I am thankful and grateful that you chose me. I want nothing more than to be like you in all I think and say and do. But with my own strength, under my own power, I don’t know how I could possibly live such a life. Who said you could think and speak and act like me with your own efforts, under your own power and by your own strength? Certainly not me. No doubt, living your life with and for me with require your full attention and all-out effort. But your full attention and all-out efforts will never enable you to live a life of thinking and speaking and acting like me. You will never be able to make yourself holy. To think otherwise would be foolish. I’m confused. How then will I ever be able to live the life you have called me to live? First, you must know and believe and accept that you have been made holy in my sight by my Son’s payment of your sins. His sacrifice made it so you could be forgiven of your sins and cleansed of your unrighteousness. When He became your Savior and Lord you left your old sinful life behind you. You are now dead to sin and alive to me and the holy life I have called you to live. Second, you must keep your heart and mind and life focused on me. I will mold and shape you. I will change your heart and transform your mind. I will guard and guide you. I will protect and strengthen you. I will make you able to live the life I have called you to live. I will give you my thoughts to think. I will give you my words to speak. I will give you my deeds to do. Will you keep your heart and mind and life focused on me? Will you live the life of salvation you have been given to live? Will you rely on me? Yes, I will rely on you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. That will be very good. Then you will be able to live the life I have called you to live.

Heavenly Father, thank you for choosing me. It is my desire to become like you in all I think, say and do. Mold and shape me so I can become like you. I will not slip back into living my old sinful life. Instead, I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. Amen

Prepare Your Minds

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Prepare Your Minds - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Prepare Your Minds – Growing As Disciples

In Your Presence

Are you ready for action? Am I prepared for what kind of action? Are you prepared to live the life that I have called you to live? What kind of life have you called me to live? You tell me. I know something about the life that you have not called me to live. Tell me about that. You do not want my heart and mind and life to be conformed to the values, patterns and practices of the world. You do not want me to think and speak and act just like everyone else in the world. You do not want me to live the corrupt and evil life that I once lived. You don’t want me to live a self-centered, self-sufficient, and self-indulgent life. You don’t want my life to be all about pursuing comfort and seeking pleasure. No, I do not.

How can I live a life that is ready for action? How can I be prepared to live a Godly life that is pleasing to you? How can I live a self-controlled life that desires to do your will? You are Holy. That’s right. You want me to become like you. That’s true. On my own, with my own strength I cannot live a holy life. Without your help, I cannot be holy. Without your working in me, I cannot become like you. No, you cannot. Well, I want to become like you. I want to know you. I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to follow you to wherever you lead me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want all my thoughts and words and deeds to be holy and pleasing in your sight. That’s good. Have you given me impossible desires? No, I have not given you impossible desires. What have I called you to do? You have called me to come to you. Where and when and how do you think you will be changed? I will be changed in your presence. That’s right. You will keep on changing me as I keep on coming to you. That’s true. Do you believe this? Will you keep on coming to me? Will you set your hope fully on me? Yes, I will keep coming to you. I will set my hope fully on you. Then you will be changed. You will think my thoughts, speak my words and do my deeds. You will be holy, because I am holy.  I welcome you to do your work in and through me. Mold and shape me according to your purposes and plans. Yes, I will and that will be very good.

Lord, at one time I allowed my life to be conformed to the world. My thoughts and words and deeds were all evil. But, that all changed when you called me. You changed my heart, transformed my mind and gave me a burning desire to love, follow and serve you. Amen

Holy

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Holy - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Holy – Growing As Disciples

Are You Ready?

Are you ready? Am I ready for what? Are you ready to be the person that I have called you to be? Are you ready to go where I guide you? Are you ready to do what I ask of you? Are you ready to leave your old life behind you? Are you ready to walk into the new life that I have for you? Will you walk through the doors that I open before you? You have me curious. I am intrigued. You have me yearning for more. I certainly don’t want to stay where I am. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want what you want. That’s very good.

That’s half the battle. What is the other half of the battle? You tell me. What has held you back from walking through open doors that I have placed before you? When have you not gone where I guided you? When have you not done what I have asked of you? This is a very uncomfortable subject for me to talk about. I’m sure of that. Even having this discussion involves opening a door. This subject of this discussion, has been a closed door. A discussion on this topic, has been off limits. You have made it very clear to me that you don’t want to discuss this topic. Am I right or am I wrong about this? Who, am I to argue with you? There is nothing that can be hidden from you. That’s right. So, I will open the door to this discussion. I have not always gone where you have guided me or done what you have asked me because I have been afraid. What have you been afraid of? I have been afraid of the unknown. I have been afraid that I might fail. I have been afraid that I might face rejection and ridicule. I have felt inadequate and unprepared. I have felt unable to go and do what you might ask of me. There you said it. There were no big surprises to me. You have felt what everyone who loves, follows and serves me will feel. You are not unique. You are not alone. I will be with you every step of the way. As you feel fear, you will drawer closer to me as I draw closer to you. As you feel fear you will come to rely even more on me as I help you to do what I have given you to do for me. Will I be enough for you? You are infinitely more than enough for me. Are you ready? Yes Lord, I am ready.

You will leave your old life behind. You will no longer follow the patterns, practices and values of the world. You will no longer conform to the evil in which you once walked. You will set all your hope on me. You will follow me to where I lead you. You will do whatever I ask of you. You will live an obedient and faithful life before me. I will work in you, for you and through you. I will make you into the person I want you to become. You will learn from me. You will know my thoughts. You will walk in my ways. You will become like me. I will make you holy, just as I am holy. I welcome all your work in and through my life. That is very good.

Lord, I will set my heart, mind and life on you. I will no longer allow myself to conform to the evil desires in which I once lived. I have heard your call. I have come to you. I want what you want. Keep on making me to be like you as I love, follow and serve you. Amen
