Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled

The Virtuous Life - Day 193 - 1 Peter 1:13-16 - Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled - Growing As Disciples

The Virtuous Life – Day 193 – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Prepare Your Minds For Action Be Self-Controlled – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:13-16 (NIV)

Mindset

What is your mindset? I’m not sure what you mean by that question. What is your mind set on? What are you allowing yourself to think? That is a very important question, I would guess. You would be guessing correctly. Your mindset will direct the course of your life. All your thoughts and words and actions will flow out of your mindset. All your opinions and values will be come from your mindset. If your mind is set on worldly things, you will then think and speak and act in worldly ways. All the conduct and character of your life will be guided by your mindset. Now, do you understand the importance of your mind set? Yes, I do. You have made that quite clear to me. That’s good.

I know that you want to become like me. I know that you want to think and speak and act in ways that are pleasing to me.I know that you want to be holy just as I am holy. Am I correct? Are these the true desires of your heart and mind and life? Yes, you know the desires of my heart. I am also confident that you have placed these desires in me. They have come to me as a great and gracious gift, from you to me. I also know that you have and are continuing to fan the flame of these desires in me. Yes, I am. It is wise that you recognize what I have, am, and will continue to do in you. The only wisdom that I have comes from you. That is also true.

Will you continue to set your heart and mind and life on me? Will you keep on turning away from worldly thoughts from this world? Will you continue to allow me to prepare your mind for action so that you will be able to think and speak and act like me? Will you allow me to make you into a bold and bright witness for me in the darkness of this world? Yes Lord, I will. I will draw near to you. I will submit my heart and mind and life to you. The focus of my attention will be on you. I will listen attentively to you. I will live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. I will go where you guide me. I will do what you ask of me. That will be very good. Then the desires of your heart, and mind and life will be fulfilled. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will prepare my mind for action. I will set my heart and mind and life on all the hope that I have in you. Help me to be self-controlled. Help me to think and speak and act like you. Help me to be holy in all I think, say, and do. Make me to be like you. Amen

Action

Let’s talk about that word action. What about it? I want you to take action. What kind of action do you want me to take? I want you to take two different actions. What two actions do you want me to take? What does my word say? You want me to tell you what two actions you want me to take? Yes, I do. That will take some thought. Yes, it will. That’s exactly what I want you to do. I want you to think about taking action. Why is that? You won’t take any action at all unless you think about it first. Both of the actions that you want me to take involve my mind. Yes, they do. You want me to take control over what I allow myself to think. Yes, I do. You don’t want me to continue to allow my mind to be conformed to the pattern of evil desires that are in the world. That’s right. How will I take control over what I allow myself to think? You tell me. Well, I could start by eliminating anything that encourages or stimulates evil thinking in my life. I could get rid of everything that might feed evil desires in my heart and mind. That would be a very good way to start taking control over what you allow yourself to think. What else? What other action will you take with your mind? I will set my mind on the hope that I have in you. I will set my mind on you. I will set my mind on what you want me to think. I will set my mind on what you want me to do. I will set my mind on the life you have called me to live. I will set my mind on the person you have called me to be. Yes, those are the thoughts that I want you to take action and begin to think. Did you notice something about my earlier question? No, I did not. I’m not at all sure of what you mean. I did not ask you what other action will you take next with your mind. Why is that? Why do you think? Both actions of setting aside evil thoughts and setting my mind on your thoughts need to be ongoing and occur at the same time. Why is that? The only way to stop thinking evil thoughts is to start thinking your thoughts. Your thoughts will cleanse my heart and my mind. Your thoughts will help me to live the life that you have called me to live. Your thoughts will transform me into the person that you want me to be. Your thoughts will make me more like you. Yes, they will. Will you set aside evil thoughts and start thinking my thoughts? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, thank you for calling me to come to you. You have lavished me with your grace. You have given me your salvation. Help me now to have a heart, mind and life that are prepared for action and ready to live the life you have called me to live. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – 1 Peter 1:13-16 – Holy – Growing As Disciples

Are You Ready?

Are you ready? Am I ready for what? Are you ready to be the person that I have called you to be? Are you ready to go where I guide you? Are you ready to do what I ask of you? Are you ready to leave your old life behind you? Are you ready to walk into the new life that I have for you? Will you walk through the doors that I open before you? You have me curious. I am intrigued. You have me yearning for more. I certainly don’t want to stay where I am. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want what you want. That’s very good.

That’s half the battle. What is the other half of the battle? You tell me. What has held you back from walking through open doors that I have placed before you? When have you not gone where I guided you? When have you not done what I have asked of you? This is a very uncomfortable subject for me to talk about. I’m sure of that. Even having this discussion involves opening a door. This subject of this discussion, has been a closed door. A discussion on this topic, has been off limits. You have made it very clear to me that you don’t want to discuss this topic. Am I right or am I wrong about this? Who, am I to argue with you? There is nothing that can be hidden from you. That’s right. So, I will open the door to this discussion. I have not always gone where you have guided me or done what you have asked me because I have been afraid. What have you been afraid of? I have been afraid of the unknown. I have been afraid that I might fail. I have been afraid that I might face rejection and ridicule. I have felt inadequate and unprepared. I have felt unable to go and do what you might ask of me. There you said it. There were no big surprises to me. You have felt what everyone who loves, follows and serves me will feel. You are not unique. You are not alone. I will be with you every step of the way. As you feel fear, you will drawer closer to me as I draw closer to you. As you feel fear you will come to rely even more on me as I help you to do what I have given you to do for me. Will I be enough for you? You are infinitely more than enough for me. Are you ready? Yes Lord, I am ready.

You will leave your old life behind. You will no longer follow the patterns, practices and values of the world. You will no longer conform to the evil in which you once walked. You will set all your hope on me. You will follow me to where I lead you. You will do whatever I ask of you. You will live an obedient and faithful life before me. I will work in you, for you and through you. I will make you into the person I want you to become. You will learn from me. You will know my thoughts. You will walk in my ways. You will become like me. I will make you holy, just as I am holy. I welcome all your work in and through my life. That is very good.

Lord, I will set my heart, mind and life on you. I will no longer allow myself to conform to the evil desires in which I once lived. I have heard your call. I have come to you. I want what you want. Keep on making me to be like you as I love, follow and serve you. Amen
