Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 163 – Luke 11:1 – Teach Us To Pray – Growing As Disciples

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1 (NIV)

Teach Me To Pray

Is this what you want? Is what do I want? Do you want me to teach you to pray? Yes, I want you to teach me to pray. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to know you. I want to love and follow and serve you. I want to live my entire with and for you. I want to accomplish your purposes. I want to fulfill your plans. I want to shine brightly as your witness in the world. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. How could any of this happen if I did not allow you to teach me to pray. Without prayer, I would not know you or your will. Without prayer. I would not receive your instruction or follow your guidance. In fact, how could I even call you Lord if I wasn’t living a life of attentively listening to you. I want to walk through life with you. I want to live my life in a constant dialogue with you. Without prayer, I would never be able to live the life that you have called me to live. All of what you have said is true.

What must you do if you are serious about allowing me to teach you to pray? Many have said that they want me to teach them to pray. Far fewer have allowed me to teach them to pray. If I am to allow you to teach me to pray, I must come to meet with you in prayer. I must set aside a time and place to meet with you in prayer. I must withdraw from the noise and busyness of life to make myself available to you. I must quiet myself before you. I must focus my heart and mind and life on you. Why is all this true? Learning to pray will not be easy. Learning to pray will require effort. What kind of effort will be required of you? I must turn myself over to you. I must be fully attentive to you. I must yearn to hear from you. Why is this true? I am hard of hearing. I am not a good listener. You must make me able to hear. You must strengthen me so that I can hear from you. You must remove anything that is in me that makes me hard of hearing. I have no doubt that you will do all this for me as I meet with you in prayer, as I seek you with all my heart. You will make me able to hear and know and love and follow and serve you. You will certainly teach me to pray. Yes, I will. Draw near to me now, the teaching will begin. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, that is my prayer. That is my desire. That is my request. Teach me to pray. Draw me near to you. Quiet me in your presence. Help me to hear your voice. Speak to me. I’m listening. Teach me. Use my prayers to accomplish your purposes and plans. Amen

Teach Us To Pray

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Luke 11:1 - Teach Us To Pray - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Luke 11:1 – Teach Us To Pray – Growing As Disciples

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1 (ESV)

Take A Seat

I have heard your prayer. You are asking me to teach you how to pray. Is that correct? Yes, that is correct, I want you to teach me how to pray. Where would you need to be if you want me to teach you to pray? I’m not sure what you mean. What would you need to be doing if you really want me to teach you to pray? I suppose I would need to be listening to you. I would need to not be doing something else. I would need to take a seat and enter your classroom of prayer. I would need to listen attentively to all that you wanted to teach me. Yes, that is true.

So how will you enter my classroom of prayer? When will you allow me to teach you how to pray? I will enter your classroom of prayer by making myself available to you. I will withdraw from the noise and busyness of life so that I can hear from you. Will that be easy? Will that come naturally? Will that take some effort? Will that need to become a priority? I know why you are asking me these questions. Why am I asking you these questions? If I don’t schedule a time and select a special place to meet with you in prayer, it will never happen. Life will get busy. I will become distracted. My good intentions will never result in action being taken. I will never learn how to pray on the fly. Life is too busy. Life is too noisy. I will not be able to hear your voice in the busyness or over the noise of life. No, you will not. Will you set a time and pick a special place to meet with me in prayer? Yes Lord, I will.

How often will you meet with me in prayer? How long will my class on prayer last? When will my class on prayer begin? Your class on prayer will begin right now. There is not a moment to waste. I want my instruction to begin immediately. That’s good. Your class on prayer, at least for me, will meet every day. Why is that? There is not a day that I don’t need to hear from you. That’s right. Your class on prayer will not end until the day I come to meet you face to face. Every day you will teach me how to pray. Every day you will give me prayers to pray. You will give me prayers to pray that will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I will.

Lord, that is the prayer of my heart. I want you to teach me how to pray. I will enter your classroom. I will take my seat and sit down so I can receive your instruction. Give me prayers to pray that will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Lord Teach Us To Pray

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Luke 11:1 - Lord, Teach Us To Pray - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Luke 11:1 – Lord, Teach Us To Pray – Growing As Disciples

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1 (NIV)

Teach Me

Just as the disciples asked you to teach them how to pray so I am also asking you to teach me how to pray. I want you to enroll me in your class. I am your student. You are my teacher. Without, your instruction I will never become a person of prayer. Why do you want to learn how to pray? First and most importantly, I want to know you. I want to be able to hear your voice speaking to me. So, I will come to you. I will be still before you. I will rest in your presence. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. What do you think will happen to you as you come to know me? As I come to know you two things will happen to me. The better I know you, the more I will know your love for me. The more I know your love for me the more I will love you.  As I grow to know and love you the more I will become like you. I will begin to think your thoughts. I will know your will. I will begin to walk in your ways. I will want to do what pleases you. Yes, you will.

If you want me to teach you how to pray what must you do? If I want you to teach me how to pray I must show up. What do you mean by that? I must meet with you in prayer. I must keep on coming to you. It would be silly for me to ask you to teach me how to pray if I wasn’t willing to take time to pray. That’s right. You said you would be my student and I would be your teacher. Yes, I did. How often do you think my class in prayer will meet? There will be specific times and places for me to meet in class with you. My class in prayer with you will also continue throughout all the moments of every day. Yes, both are correct. When do you think your class in prayer will end? My class in prayer will never end. Once I start praying I will never stop listening to you. Once I start praying I will never stop talking to you. You will keep on teaching me how to pray. You will keep on showing me what to pray for. Yes, I will. Are you ready to start praying? Yes Lord, I am.

Lord, I want a close relationship with you and the Father and The Holy Spirit. I want to learn how to pray. Help me. I want you to be my teacher. As your follower and student I will come to learn. Enroll me now. I’m ready to start. Amen
