You Will Receive Power

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 23 - Acts 1:8 - You Will Receive Power - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 23 – Acts 1:8 – You Will Receive Power – Growing As Disciples

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”    Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Power

I desperately need that. What do you desperately need? I desperately need your power. Why is that? I have learned, over and over again, that apart from you, I can doing nothing. Without, your power I am weak. Without, your power I am timid. Without, your power my life will neither bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name. That is why I desperately need your power. You have given a good answer. You clearly do know why you need my power.

When will my power come upon you? Now that is a good question. Your power will come upon me when I need it. Your power will come on me as I step out in faith to be your witness in the world. Your power will come upon me as I rely on you to do the work of ministry. I know all this might seem obvious to all, but not to me. How so? I have wanted your power to be on me all the time. I have wanted your power to be with me even when I did not need it. I have expected to receive your power well in advance of doing any work of ministry. I know this will sound silly. I have wanted your power even while casually thinking about being your witness in the world or before doing any work of ministry. I don’t think that is how your power works. How do you think my power works? I think you specialize in the just in time delivery of your power. Why is that? What will happen to you if you step out in faith and then expect my power to make you able to be my witness in the world? My faith in you will grow. My reliance on you will be surer. I will know without a doubt that is you that is working in and through me. You are giving me your power and strength. You are making me bold and courageous. You are making me able to be an abundantly fruitful witness for you in the world. You are helping me to bring glory to your name. I will know, as will everyone else, that all the praise and honor and glory go to you and not to me. So, my just in time delivery of all the power you will need is a very good thing isn’t it? Yes, it is. It pleases me that you know this to be true. Thank you, Lord.

Holy Spirit, empower me a be a witness for Christ in the world today. Make me bold and courageous. Use the words of my mouth to make the Good News of the Gospel known to others both near and far away. Help me to bear fruit and bring glory to His name. Amen

But You Will Receive Power

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 155 - Acts 1:8 - But You Will Receive Power - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 155 – Acts 1:8 – But You Will Receive Power – Growing As Disciples

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Power

I want to be your witness in the world. I want to be used by you to draw others to yourself. I know that my efforts to be your witness in the world have often been powerless and feeble attempts. I know that apart from you I can do nothing of lasting and eternal value. Operating under my own power and strength will accomplish nothing. I know where the problem has been in the past. I have neither waited for or relied on your power to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I am very tired of living a fruitless life. I have had enough of rushing off to take on your assignments by myself. I don’t want any more of that. That’s good.

So, what will you do differently now that you have realized that your efforts alone will never be enough to go and do my will? I will wait for and rely on your power. I will meet with you in prayer. I will ask for your help. I will receive your instruction and follow your guidance. That does not mean that I will sit around forever. I know that there is a time to wait and a time to move out. I will wait for your green light. When you say wait, I will wait.  When you say go, I will go. It seems to me that there is a time of waiting and a time to take that faith filled first step. I will follow your timing rather than my own. I will take my first and every step with you. I want you to lead me. I want you to guide. I want you to direct my efforts. That will be very good.

Your power does seem to come with that faith filled first step. You’ve noticed? Yes, I have noticed that your power does not come to those who rush off without you. Yes, I have noticed that your power does not come to those who do not move out with you. So, I will neither run ahead of you or lag behind you. I will allow you to lead me to where you want me to go. I will allow you to give me what you want me to do. That will be very good.

Then what will you expect? What will you hope for? What will you have faith to believe? I believe that you will work in and through my life. Your Holy Spirit will empower me to do your work. Your Holy Spirit will make me able to do what I could never do by myself. Your Holy Spirit will empower me to be your witness in the world around me. Yes, He will. I will powerfully use you as my witness in the world. You will accomplish the work that I will give you to do for me. Your hopes and dreams and prayers that I have given to you will be answered. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know that without the power of your Holy Spirit working in and through me, I will be unable to be your witness in the world. Empower me. Make me able to go and do your work. Use me near and far to be your witness so many will come to know you. Amen

My Witnesses

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Holy Spirit - Acts 1:8 - My Witnesses - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Holy Spirit – Acts 1:8 – My Witnesses – Growing As Disciples

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Wait

Don’t think that you have power within yourself to be my witness in the world. Don’t think that all your gifts, talents and abilities will be able to accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans. Be sure in your heart and mind that apart from me you can do nothing. Rely on me fully. Depend on me completely. Don’t rush off to go and do what you think I want you to do without my help and power. Don’t take one step without me. Do you understand what I am saying to you? Yes Lord, I understand what you are saying to me. I have no doubt about the truth of all that you are saying to me. Why is that? I have an abundance of failed experiences trying to know and do your will based on my power and strength. There is no doubt that you have given me gifts and talents and abilities to serve you. Of that, I am sure. I am just as sure that all my gifts and talents and abilities will accomplish nothing if I rely solely on them to try to accomplish your purpose and fulfill your plans. Why is that? You want me to rely on you. You want me to depend on you. You want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. You want to be able to hear and answer my prayers. The work that I do for you should point others to you. You are the one who should receive all the glory and honor and praise. You want me to be a light in the world for you. You want me to be a witness that draws others to you. The spotlight is not meant to shine on me. The power to bear fruit for your kingdom does not come from me. This is all true.

So what will you do to come to rely on me? I will pray. I will seek you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will draw near to you as you draw near to me. I will wait for your instructions. I will follow your guidance. I will ask that the power of your Holy Spirit will fill me so that I can go and do your will. I will rely on your Holy Spirit to make me a bold and courageous witness for you in the world. I will let your Holy Spirit’s power work in and through me. I will not rely on myself. I will remain in you. I will wait. When you say go, I will go. That will be very good. The power of my Holy Spirit will work in and through you.

Holy Spirit, there have been many times when I have rushed off to minister to others without waiting for your anointing. Help me to wait on you. Holy Spirit, fill me afresh so that I will able to be a powerful and fruitful witness for Jesus Christ in the world today. Amen

My Witnesses

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Discipleship - Acts 1:8 - My Witnesses - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Discipleship – Acts 1:8 – My Witnesses – Growing As Disciples

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Receive Power

Do you want to be a bold witness for me in the world? Do you want to be a tool in my hand? Do you want me to use your life to bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom? Do you want your life to bring glory to my name? Yes, I want to be used by you. Yes, I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I want you to use my life as a tool in your hand. How can all these things be possible? That is a good and very important question.

You know what does not work. Yes, I do. What does not work? Launching off under my own power does not work. I will never be able to bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name with my own efforts. I know that I need your power. I know that I can do nothing apart from you. I know that I need you to be working in and through my life if I am to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, that’s right. What else doesn’t work? It doesn’t work to sit around and expect you to empower me to do nothing. I don’t need your power to sit around and do nothing. No, you do not. I need your power to go out and be a bold witness for you in the world. Yes, you do.

You have talked about what doesn’t work. Let’s talk about what does work. It works to ask for your power to go and do what you have asked me to do for you. Yes, it does. It works to rely on your power rather than on my own power. Yes, it does. It works to wait in prayer until I have received your power. It works to step out in faith and trust, believing that your power will be working in and through my life as I serve you. Yes, it does. It works to give you thanks and praise for how you have, are, and will work in and through my life. It works to give you honor and glory for all that you have done, are doing and will do as I go out into the world to be your witness, everywhere both near and far. Yes, all these things work. Will you pray to me? Will you rely on me? Will you go out into the world to be a bold, powerful and fruitful witness for me? Yes Lord, I will.

Holy Spirit, give me your power so I can go and be a bold witness for Christ everywhere both near and far in the world. Help me to bear an abundance of fruit for the kingdom of God and bring glory to the Lord’s name. Use me as a powerful tool in your hand. Amen
