Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Freedom – Galatians 5:1 – Set Us Free- Growing As Disciples

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Stand Firm

Stay right there, stand firm where you are right now. Where am I right now? You have been set free. You are living in the freedom that I have secured for you. The power of sin has been broken over your life. You are no longer under the bondage of your old life. You are no longer in the grip of old addictions. Nothing has a hold over you any longer. You have a hold of me. Yes, I have a firm hold on you. I am your Savior and Lord. I am your God and Father. You are my child. You are under my protection. You can walk freely to where I lead you. You have the power to do what I ask of you. So, I will say it again, “Stand firm, in the freedom that I have secured for you”.

How can I stand firm in the freedom that you have secured for me? How can I make sure that I will not let myself be burdened again by a yoke of slavery? You will not go where you should not go. You will not do what you should not do. How will this be sure and true? You will draw near to me as I draw near to you. You will submit yourself to me, resist the devil and all his evil. Then he will flee from you. Don’t think that you can resist the devil and all his evil with your own will and strength. If you try, you will surely fail. It is in your drawing near to me and submitting yourself to me that you will continue in the freedom and victory that I have secured for you.

What has happened to you as you have continued to draw near to me? As I have continued to draw near to you, my love for you has grown stronger every day. Every day it is the desire of my heart to live my life with and for you. I hunger for you. I thirst for you. I want to know you. I want to know your will. I want to walk in your ways. In every way, I want to do what is pleasing to you, not because I should or must, but because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. What has happened to your desire for sin as you have continued to draw near to me? Sin has lost it attraction. Sin has lost its appeal. I would much rather walk through life with you than live in sin. That is very good. Keep on drawing near to me and you will never again submit yourself to a yoke of slavery to sin.

Lord, I know you have set me free. You have made it so I can walk in your freedom. No longer will I live as a slave in bondage to sin. I will never allow myself to be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. I will live with you, in the fullness of life, you have given to me. Amen
