Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – Psalm 115:1-3 – Not To Us – Growing As Disciples

Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. Psalm 115:1-3 (NIV)

Not About Me

I know that life does not revolve around me. I am not the center of attention. All the praise and honor and glory do not belong to me. I am not on everyone else’s mind. People don’t set their clocks around when I will come or go. I don’t command attention. I don’t deserve notice. I don’t light up a room. People do not become quiet because I am about to speak. How long did it take you to come to these realizations? It took me quite a while to come to these realizations. At times, I have wanted to be noticed. I have wanted attention. I have wanted to be recognized. I have wanted to be special. Although, there is something a little odd about me. What’s that? I have also disdained the limelight. I have never wanted to be a part of the “in crowd.” A good part of me has lived in conflict. How so? Don’t get me wrong. There is no chance of that. A good part of me has wanted to feel special but in an out of the limelight sort of way. I get it.

How long has it taken you to realize that you are special? I didn’t realize that I was special until I realized that you loved me. You came into this world for me. You lived and died for me. You gave yourself as a sacrifice for me. You forgave my sins. You cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. You made it so I could live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. Yes, I did.

I now love you because you first loved me. You deserve all the praise and honor and glory. I no longer want the attention to be on me. I no longer want to be recognized or applauded. I don’t want to command attention or deserve notice. What do you want? I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to live like you lived. I want to give like you gave. I want to love like you loved. I want to shine brightly as a witness in the world for you. I want to live a life that points others to you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. I want others to come to know and love you just as you have allowed me to come to know and love you. My life will not be about me. My life will be about you. That’s what I want. That is the desire of my heart. That is my prayer. That will be very good.

Lord, at one time I thought life revolved around me. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted to receive all the praise, honor and glory. Not now, not ever again. Now, I want to live a life that points others to you. I want to bring glory to your name. Amen
