Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.” Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. Matthew 20:32-34 (NIV)
What do you want? Am I hearing you correctly? You are asking me what I want? I can ask you for what I want? That’s right, you got it. I am asking you what you want. Don’t you know what I want? Yes, I know what you want. Why then, are you asking me what I want? I want you to tell me what you want. I want you to come and ask me for what you want. Do you know why that is? You want me to live in a relationship with you. You want me to come to rely on you. You want me to ask you for what I want. Yes, I do.
Can I ask you for anything? Yes, you can ask me for anything. What if what I want does not line up with what you want for me? Does that seem like a good question to you? Isn’t that I question to which you already know the answer? Yes, I’m sure that I know the answer to that question. Tell me the answer to your question. You might say, “not yet”, if what I want is not what you want for me right now. You might say, “no”, if what I want is not at all what you want for me. Have I ever said, “not yet” or “no” to you? Yes, you have said, “not yet” and “no” to me many times before. So, you can ask me for anything, but I won’t say “yes” to everything you ask of me. I get that.
What has happened when what you wanted and what I wanted for you were the same thing? Then you have heard and answered my prayer with a “yes.” That’s right. Have you noticed anything changing about your prayers as you have continued to love and follow and serve me? Yes, I have noticed that my prayers have been changing quite dramatically. How so? More and more often I know that I am wanting what you want for me. I would say that quite often I have desires in my heart that I know come from you. How do you know that? Let me give you some examples of the prayers that burn with desire in me. I’d like to hear them. I want to know you intimately. I want to follow you closely. I want to rely on you completely. I want to serve you fully. I want to do what is pleasing to you. I want to go where you lead me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to be used by you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. All of these wants within me come from you. Yes, they do. Will I hear and answer every one of these prayers? Yes, you will, without a doubt. Yes, I will. Keep on telling me what you want. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.
Lord, at one time, I was blind and walking in the darkness of this world. You opened up my eyes so that I could see you. You made it possible for me to follow you. Now, I want you to use me in your service. Bear fruit through my life for your kingdom and glory. Amen
