Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Ephesians 6:19-20 – Words May Be Given Me – Growing As Disciples
Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. Ephesians 6:19-20 (NIV)
Bold, Courageous And Fearless
I’m a little worried. What are you a little worried about? I have never been a bold and confident and courageous speaker. I have always been under confident, timid and fearful as a speaker. Why is that? I don’t know for sure. Are you positive about that? No, I’m not positive about that. Let me ask you a few questions. I’m listening. Do you believe that I have a purpose and a plan for your life? Yes, I do. Do you believe that I have called you to go and serve me? Yes, I do. Do you believe that I have given you gifts and talents and abilities with which you can serve me? Yes, I do. Do you believe that I will be with you to help you to do whatever I give you to do? Yes, I do. Do you know that I will always call you to do more than you are able to do? Now, why is that? That is part of the reason that I sometimes feel under confident, timid and fearful as I am serving you. You have a mistake in your thinking. I do? Yes, you do. What is the mistake I have in my thinking? You think that it is the largeness and sometimes seemingly overwhelming size of the tasks I give you that makes you under confident, timid and fearful. Yes, that’s exactly what I think. That is exactly where you are wrong. How so? It is your reliance on yourself that makes you under confident, timid and fearful. It is not the size of my tasks that makes you under confident, timid and fearful. I have a few more questions for you. You have my full attention. Do you think that your success or failure in serving me depends on you and your gifts, talents and abilities? Will your success or failure depend on how well you perform? I see where this conversation is headed. Where is that? If I rely on myself, I will never be able to accomplish the large and overwhelming tasks you give me. If I rely on myself, I will always be under confident, timid and fearful. That’s right. You want me to come to rely on you. You want me to live fully dependent on you. You don’t want me to be self-confident. You want me to be confident in you. That’s right. You want me to be confident that you will work in and through me. You want to me to be confident that you will make me able to do whatever you give me to do for you. The greatest self-confidence will never be remotely as strong as the confidence I can have in you. That’s true. Will you come to me? Will you rely on me? Will you ask me to make you bold and courageous and fearless as you follow and serve me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.
Lord, help me to be bold and courageous. I will trust you completely. I will rely on you fully. I believe that when I open my mouth to proclaim the gospel, words will come out. You will not leave me stammering and struggling to speak to others on your behalf. Amen
