“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Matthew 7:9-11 (NIV)
Ask Me
I want you to come and ask me for all that you need. Does that surprise you? No, not really. Do you know why I want you to come and ask me for all that you need? I’m not sure. Can you think of any reasons why I might want you to come and ask me for all that you need? Do you want me to take a guess? Yes, that would be a great idea. The alternative to me asking you for what I need would be you giving me what I need without me having to ask you for it. So, there is some aspect of me coming to ask you that is important to you. Yes, there is. Obviously, you know what I need even before I ask it. Yes, I do.
I’m guessing that you want me to rely on you. Coming to ask you for what I need is part of me relying on you. Asking for something from you demonstrates that I am relying on you. Yes, it does. There is more though, isn’t there? Yes, there is much more. Coming to ask you for what I need demonstrates that I have faith that you will hear and answer my prayer. Yes it does. There is something more basic, even more fundamental. Asking you for what I need is part of living in a close and intimate relationship with you. You are my Heavenly Father. Yes, I am. I am your child. Yes, you are. You love me. You delight in giving me what I need. Yes, I do. You want me to know that you love me. You want me to know that you are taking care of me. You want me to know that you are supplying my needs. Yes, I do.
Think of yourself as an example. You love your children. It is your joy to meet their needs. You like it best when they come to you to ask you for all that they need. Their requests don’t surprise you. You already know what they need even before they ask you. But, it gives you great joy in your letting them know that you are there for them. Yes, it does. When you see their joy in having their needs met, it gives you joy as well. Yes, it does. I am here for you. It gives me great joy to meet your needs. Will you come and ask me for all that you need? Yes Lord, I will ask you for all that I need.
Heavenly Father, I know I have been making a big mistake. I have not been asking you for all that I need from you. From here on I will come to you to ask you for all I need. I will rely on you to meet all my needs as I follow you. Amen
