Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 104 – Luke 14:33 – Give Up Everything – Growing As Disciples

In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33 (NIV)

Your Disciple

That is what I want to be, without question. What do you want to be? I want to be your disciple. I want to follow you to wherever you lead me. I want to go to where you will guide me. I want to do whatever you will ask of me. You are sure about all of this? There is no reluctance or hesitation within you? None whatsoever. You seem quite confident. Well, I do know that you will make me able to be your disciple. It is you who has put this passionate desire within me to love, follow and serve you. I didn’t conceive or conjure up this desire within me. I find it quite surprising that I want nothing more or nothing less than to be able to know and do your will. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than serve you. This is not a thought or effort of my own self-will. This has to be your Holy Spirit living and working inside of me. Yes, it is. So, my confidence does not rest on myself. That would be prideful and foolish. My confidence rests on you and the work you are doing in and through me. That is very good.

Is your decision to give up everything to be my disciple a once and for all time decision? Yes, it is. I will not reevaluate my decision based on where you send me or what you ask of me. I will not decide to follow and obey only if I completely understand or fully agree with where you are sending me or what you are asking of me. I do know that I will be given many opportunities to keep on reaffirming my decision to be your disciple. In these moments of reaffirmation, I am trusting that you will strengthen and encourage me to keep on giving myself fully and unreservedly to you. I know that you are likely to ask more, rather than less of me, as I keep on moving forward with you. That’s right. I know that you will continue to ask me to do only what I can do with your power and strength. You will keep me reliant on you. You will keep me dependent on you. You will keep me near to you as I continually ask you for your help. I will keep on drawing near to you. I will keep on trusting you. That is very good. You will make me able to live as your disciple. Yes, I will. You can count on me. Thank you, Lord

Lord, I will joyfully give myself fully and completely to you. All that I am, all that I have, and all that I hope to be is yours. I am at your disposal. I will follow you to where you lead me. I will go to wherever you direct me. I will do whatever you ask of me. Amen
