Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 22 – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – Strict Training – Growing As Disciples

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.  No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV)

Run Well

I certainly want to be able to do that. You certainly want to be able to do what? I want to be able to run well. I don’t want anything to hinder me from running well. I don’t want to allow anything to knock me off course.  I want to be able to complete the course you have set before me. I want to end well and finish strong the race you have given me to run. It sounds like you have thought quite a bit about running well. Yes, running well is not a new subject to me. I have thought about running well most of my life. That’s good.

What must you do if you want to run well? What must you do if you want to stay on course and finish the race, I have given you to run? I must enter into strict training if I want to run well and finish the race you have set before me. I must also eliminate and avoid any obstacles, hindrances or barriers that will prevent me from running well and finishing strong. What will go into your strict training? You tell me, you are the coach. Good answer. I will allow you to teach and train me. I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. So, you will need to listen attentively to me? Yes, that’s right. How will you come to listen to me? I will listen to you in prayer. I will listen to you in your word. I will listen to you in worship. Do each one of these sound like an element of your training? Yes, they all do without a doubt. Can you think of any more ways you will listen to me? Can you think of any more elements of your training? I will listen to you in service. What do you mean by that? I will serve you whenever, wherever and however you ask me. I will use all the gifts and talents and abilities you have given me to serve you. Serving you and others will definitely be part of my training. Yes, it will. How else will you listen to me? Can you think of one more element of your training? I will listen to you in fellowship. Say more about that. I will meet with you, together with other believers, as we come together to worship you. You made me to live in relationship with you and your body of believers. Yes, that’s right. I will receive a great deal of training as I live in fellowship with you and others. Yes, you will.  As you meet with me in prayer, my word, prayer, worship, service and fellowship you will be trained and prepared to run well and finish the course I have set before you. Focus your heart and mind and life on me and you will be able to avoid any obstacles, hindrances or barriers that would prevent you from running well and finishing strong. That I will do. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I want to run well as your follower. I don’t anything to hinder me on the course you have set before me. I will eliminate anything hindering me from running well. I will avoid anything that might knock me off course. I will enter into strict training with you. Amen

Not Running Aimlessly

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - 365 Days Of Guidance - 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 - Not Running Aimlessly - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – 365 Days Of Guidance – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – Not Running Aimlessly – Growing As Disciples

Olympic Effort

Your life of faith is like a race. Do you want to run well as you follow me? Are you running your race of faith with a desire to win? Yes, I want to run well as I follow you. Yes, I am running to win. I don’t want anything to distract me. I won’t look left or right or behind me. My eyes will look straight forward as I follow you. I know you will help me to run the race of faith. I know you will make me able to win the race of faith. Yes, I will.

What might distract you on your race of faith? What might hinder you from running well? Things that are of this world might hinder me from running well. Like what? The lust of the flesh might hinder me from running well. I will need to make sure that lustful and fleshly desires don’t pull me off course and prevent me from running well. I will need to separate myself from any situations and circumstances that might powerfully tempt me. That’s true. What else? The lust of the eyes might hinder me from running well. I will need to be very careful about what I allow my eyes to see. Many times I have wanted what I couldn’t have or certainly didn’t need. I will need to stop looking at whatever might allure and entice to want what I don’t have and don’t need. That’s right. What else? The pride of life might hinder me from running well. I will need to be very careful that I am not attracted and drawn to prideful things in life.  Like what? I have been tempted by power and prestige. I have wanted to be someone that does great things. These desires can lead me down the wrong path and take me off the course you have laid out for me. Yes, They can. You will do well to be on guard against any of these evils. You are right. They do have the potential to hinder you from running and finishing well in the race of faith.

How are you in training as you follow me? Are you giving an Olympic effort in your training as you follow and serve me? I’m not sure. I do know that I am fully available to whatever training you have in mind for me. I will go anywhere you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I am meeting with you daily in your word. I know that you are teaching and training me. If you have more in mind, I will welcome it with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I am at your service. I am running hard in my life of faith as I follow you. Yes, you are running hard and well. I do have more in mind for you. Follow me. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have entered the race. I love you with all my heart and soul and mind and strength. You are my Savior and Lord. I am in training as I follow and serve you. Let nothing distract me from running well. Let nothing disqualify me from receiving the prize. Amen

Key Question…  What are distractions might prevent you from running well as a follower of Jesus Christ?

Living It Out…  Train hard and run well as a follower of Jesus Christ so nothing will disqualify you at the finish line.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will help you to run to win the race of faith as you love, follow, and serve Him.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are in rigorous training as a follower of Jesus Christ.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you go into rigorous training so you can run well as a follower of Jesus Christ.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 173- 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – Goes Into Strict Training – Growing As Disciples

In Training

I have entered into training. For what are you now in training? You are asking me? Yes, I am asking you. I want you to describe your training. I was hoping that you would describe my training. You have just told me that you have entered into training. Yes, I did. You should be able to tell me the purpose of your training. That I can do. I want to run well. I want to stay on the course that you have laid out for me. I want to finish strong. I want to finish the race. I want to win the prize. I want to receive the crown that you have for me. Those are all very good desires you have in your heart. Why is that? You know the importance of spiritual training. You will not be satisfied with jogging through your race of faith. You will not sleepwalk on the course that I have laid out for you. You have a desire. You have a passion. You want to go where I lead you. You want to do what I ask of you. You will not give me half-hearted, reluctant efforts. You will give me your all and best right up until you cross the finish line. Yes, I will. But I will need your help. I cannot train alone. I cannot run alone. I need your power and strength to keep me running well. I will be with you to help you. You can be certain of that.

You are a little uncertain about your training. You are not quite sure what your training will look? That’s true. You must have some ideas of what your training will look like. I do. Let me hear your thoughts and ideas. You will train me as I come to you. You will train me as I meet with you in your word. You will train me as I meet with you in prayer. You will train me as I meet with you in worship. You will train me as I gather together with other believers. You will train me as I follow and serve you. You have answered well. What is one common element to all your training? You will be at the center of all my training. You will train me as I draw near to you. Is that also true of your running? Yes, I will run well as I keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. I will run well as I follow you to where you lead me. I will run well as I do what you ask of me. You will be in charge of my training in every step of the race I take with you. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord. Run well. I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to run well and finish strong. Help me to stay on the course you have laid out. I will enter into strict training. My heart and mind and life will be focused on you, so I don’t run aimlessly without direction. Help me to win the crown you have for me. Amen

Key Question… What are elements of your spiritual training that will help you to run well and finish strong?

Living It Out… Enter into strict spiritual training so that you will run well and finish strong in your race of faith.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will help you to run well and finish strong as you run your race of faith.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are engaged in strict training in your race of faith.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you engage in strict training so that you will run well and finish strong in your race of faith.

Goes Into Strict Training

The Virtuous Life - Day 228 - 1 Corinthians 9-24-27 - Goes Into Strict Training

The Virtuous Life – Day 228 – 1 Corinthians 9-24-27 – Goes Into Strict Training

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.  Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.  No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NIV)

Run Well

That is what I want to do. What do you want to do? I want to run well and finish strong as your follower. That is a very good goal. That is a great purpose and plan. How will you run well and finish strong as my follower? I know one thing, for sure. What’s that? I won’t run well and finish strong without your help. You will keep me on track. You will help me to stay on course. Yes, I will. In fact, you should know that I am praying for you. I want you to run well and finish strong. We both want the same thing. That is not surprising. Why is that? You placed this desire in my heart. Do you believe that I will also grant this desire that I have given to you? Yes, I do. That’s good.

What role do you play in your running well and finishing strong? I need to stay on course. I need to keep on track. What does that mean? I need to distance myself from anything that will hinder my running well as your follower. How will you do that? I will keep my heart and mind and life focused on you. When hindrances of any kind seek to entrap me and weigh me down, I will throw them off as I run to you. You will lead me. You will guide me. You will guard and protect me. Yes, I will, you can count on me. What else? I need to enter strict training. What will that look like in your daily life? In my daily life with you, I will meet with you in prayer. I will meet with you in worship. I will meet with you in your word. I will meet with you in service. I will meet with you in fellowship. In every way, I will live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. In our time together, I am sure that you will direct all my training. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, it is my desire to run well and finish strong as your follower. I want to bear and abundance of fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. With that in mind, I will distance myself from any hindrances and enter strict training as I follow you. Amen

Key Question…  What would entering strict training as a follower of Christ look like in your daily life?

Living It Out…  Enter strict training so you will run well as a follower of Christ.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that entering strict training will help you to run well as a follower of Christ.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group what spiritual disciplines are part of your strict training.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you enter strict training so you will run well as a follower of Jesus Christ.

A Crown That Will Last Forever

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 324 - 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 - A Crown That Will Last Forever - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 324 – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – A Crown That Will Last Forever- Growing As Disciples

Run

Run in such a way that you will get the prize. What does that mean to you? A great runner trains with great discipline. Their entire life is focused on their training. A great runner continually pushes themself to their limit in each workout. After their workout they make sure that they eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest so that their body can recover and be ready for their next workout. This process repeats itself daily throughout their running career. It’s a never-ending cycle of workout, rest and recover. Day by day the great runner improves little by little until they are ready to run their race to win. They have a confidence about their ability to run well because they have paid the price by training hard. That’s right.

Are you in training? Yes, I am. You’re not training to run are you? No, I am not, at least not like a runner in a race. I do want to run well. But my race is not the physical race of running. I am not running to win a temporary prize like a trophy or an Olympic gold medal. My race is to run well for you. I am training to be all that you want me to be. I’m not primarily training my body, although my body is not exempt from training. I am primarily training my heart and mind and soul to be obedient to you. My body is a secondary part of my training so that it does not hinder my running well for you. My body must obey my heart and mind and soul. That’s right.

Are you all alone in your training? Do you have a coach to help you with your training? I am not all alone in my training. I do have a coach to help train me. I would never be able to train myself. I would be completely without hope if my training depended on myself. You are my coach. You are my trainer. Yes, I am. My main job is to submit myself to your training. How do you do that? I submit myself to your training as I meet with you every day in your word. Your word is my training manual. You guide my training by your word. You train me as you apply your word to my life. Yes, I do. I use my word to mold and shape you into the person I want you to be.

How will you know if you are running well?  There is only one way that I can run well. There is only one way to gauge if I am running well. How is that? To run well I must keep my eyes on you. I must follow you to where you lead me to do what you ask of me. I will know if I am running well if I keep my eyes on you and do what you ask of me. If I were to take my eyes off you I would certainly run off course and have no idea where you wanted to lead me or what you wanted to do through me. So, you will keep your eyes on me? Yes, I will. You will keep meeting with me day by day so that I can train you? Yes, I will. Then you will be training hard, running well, and finishing strong. That is exactly what I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, help to train hard like a great athlete. Help me to run well and in such a way as to get the prize. Help me to keep my eyes on you so I do not run aimlessly without direction. Help me to finish strong and not be disqualified for the prize. Amen

Key Question…  How are you training hard, like a great athlete, as you follow Jesus Christ?

Living It Out…  Train hard, run well, and finish strong as a follower of Jesus Christ.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that Jesus Christ will help you to train hard, run well, and finish strong as His follower.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how you are training hard and running well as a follower of Jesus Christ.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you train hard, run well, and finish strong as a follower of Jesus Christ.
