Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 39 – 1 Samuel 3:8-10 – Your Servant Is Listening- Growing As Disciples

The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:8-10 (NIV) 

Speak To Me

Here I am. I am your servant. I am listening. It gives me great joy to know that you will speak to me. It fills my heart with hope and peace and joy knowing that you will take the time to talk to me. That’s good. Do you have any concerns? Do you have any desires? In the past, I know that I have failed to hear your voice. I have been distracted and preoccupied and busy. I raced right on by you. I did not pause to hear what you wanted to say to me. I don’t want any more of that. It is my desire to grow in my ability to clearly hear your voice. I want to recognize your voice. I want to respond to your speaking to me. That’s good.

What will be required of you if you want to clearly hear me speaking to you? I know that it will require time from me to learn to hear your voice. How so?  I think the strength of my desire to hear from you can be measured by the time I am willing to spend quietly listening to you. If I only spend a few minutes here and there, then I am not very serious about my desire to hear from you. On the other hand, if I am spending significant amounts of time with you, in your presence, then we can both be sure that I really do seriously want to hear from you. That’s true.

Why is time necessary for you to learn to hear my voice? Hearing your voice does not come naturally and easily to me. Why is that? The thoughts of my mind and the feelings of my heart race within me. So often, I can barely hear myself think. In order to hear from you I need to slow my heart and mind down. I need to be still before you. Your voice is like a quiet whisper. Your voice will never shout for my attention. I need to be quiet and receptive, if I want to hear from you. That’s true.

Why else is time necessary if you want to hear from me? Hearing from you is like a muscle that needs to be strengthened. The more I hear and obey you, the more I will be able to hear your voice speaking to me. What will happen as you spend more time with me? Our relationship will grow. I will come to know your thoughts. I will come to speak your words. I will come to do your deeds. I will grow in my ability to know and do your will as I live in an intimate relationship with you. You will make me to be more like you. Yes, I will do all these things in you and through you. I have a final question for you. What’s that? Are you impatient? Once, I was. Now, I am expectant. That is very good. You can expect to hear me speaking to you.

Lord, thank you for speaking to me. You use your voice to both guard and guide my life. I will listen attentively to you. I will joyfully go where you voice guides me. I will thankfully do what your voice gives me to do for you. Help me to clearly hear your voice. Amen

Key Question… How has your ability to hear the Lord speaking to you grown as you have continued to listen to Him?

Living It Out… Listen attentively to the Lord so you can hear His voice guarding and guiding you through life.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will use His voice to guard and guide the course of your life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are making your ears attentive to the Lord’s voice.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you listen to the Lord’s voice so He can guard and guide your life.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Guidance – 1 Samuel 3:8-10 – Speak For Your Servant Is Listening – Growing As Disciples

Quiet 

You live in a noisy world. You run at a frantic pace. Will you be able to hear me over the noise of this world? Will you listen to me while you run at your frantic pace? Those are good questions. Yes, they are. Do you expect me to answer them? Yes, I do. From a lifetime of experience, I know that the answer is no to both your questions. Why is that? I’m hard of hearing. Listening is not my strength. I will never hear you over the noise of the world or while I am running at a frantic pace. That’s true.

Do you want to hear from me? Do you want to hear my instructions? Do you want to follow my guidance? Yes, of course I want to hear from you. I want to know you. I want to know your will. I want to walk in your ways. I want to do what is pleasing in your sight. Then you have a problem. I do? Yes, you do.

What will you need to do if you want to hear from me? What changes will you make in your life so you can hear from me? I will stop running around. I will leave behind my busy life. I will quiet myself before you. I will turn off the noise from the world.  I will set apart a sacred time and a special place to meet with you. That will be very good.

Do you think it will be difficult to make yourself ready to hear from me? I’m sure that slowing down so that I can listen to you will be very difficult. My heart and mind and life will not stop on a dime. Are you expecting immediate results? What do you mean by that? You haven’t been quiet. You haven’t been listening. You have been racing. You have been running. Your heart and mind and life have been filled with noise. Will you have perfect hearing on the first day that you start listening to me? No, certainly not. I’m sure that it will take time to recognize and hear your voice. Will that discourage you? Will you give up? Will you quit trying to know me and walk in my ways? No, I will not quit. No, I will not give up. I will keep on meeting with you in our sacred place at our special time. That will be very good. You will hear from me.

Lord, I know that at many points you have tried to get my attention so that you could speak to me. But, I was so busy, preoccupied and not ready to listen. Now, you have my full attention. Speak to me Lord. I am listening. Amen
