If You Possess These Qualities

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ - Day 272 - 2 Peter 1:5-9 - If You Possess These Qualities - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 272 – 2 Peter 1:5-9 – If You Possess These Qualities – Growing As Disciples

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. 2 Peter 1:5-9 (NIV)

Effective And Productive

That is what I want to be. What do you want to be? I want to be effective and productive in your service. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. I want to be a bright and shining light for you in the darkness of this world. I want people to be drawn to you because they see your light and life in me. Those are very good and right and pure desires in you.

How will you be effective and productive for me in the world? Not by my efforts alone, that is for sure. My efforts alone will end in miserable failure, there is no doubt about that. I’m glad that you know that you cannot make yourself godly by your own efforts. What will you rely on? What will be your source of help? I will rely on you. I will rely on your divine power. I will rely on your powerful promises. Your power and your promises working in me will develop godly character in me that you desire for me.  Yes, that is true. Will I be able to sit back and simply allow your power and promises to work in and through me? Will I have no role in the development of godly character in me? No, I must also make every effort and participate fully in the development of godly character in me. How so? I must know your promises. I must grab hold of your promises. I must allow your promises to dwell in me richly. I must allow your promises to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Your promises will help me to stand against temptation and resist evil. The Holy Spirit will use your promises like a sword to fight in me, with me, for me and through me. As I rely on you and your powerful promises, godly character will grow in me, I will escape corruption in the world, and I will be effective and productive in serving you. Yes, you will and that will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I rely on your power and promises to help me to escape the corruption in the world. I will rely on your power and promises to live the life you want me to live. I will make every effort to grow in godly character so I can be effective and productive for you. Amen

The Virtuous Life – Day 205 – 2 Peter 1-5-9 – The More You Grow Like This – Growing As Disciples

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge,  and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness,  and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.  The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins. 2 Peter 1:5-9 (NLT)

Effective And Productive

That is what I want to be for you. What do you want to be for me? I want to be more effective and productive for you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. You have planted your word deeply in my heart and mind and life. As I have come to know and love and follow and serve you, it has become my passionate desire to live a godly life for you. It has become my great goal to be able to know and do your will. Your divine power and the promises of your word are helping me to escape the corruption that is in the world. Yes, my word is doing this work in you.

So, to be effective and productive for me remain in my presence. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. Keep on meeting with me in my world. Continue to allow my word to change your heart. Continue to allow my word to transform your mind. Continue to allow my word to guard and guide your life. Then you will bear fruit for my kingdom. Then you will bring glory to my name. Then you will continue to be more effective and productive in my service. Yes, I will do all these things. I will live in an intimate relationship with you. I will keep on meeting you in your word. I will keep on holding on to your promises. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, thank you for giving me everything I need to live a godly life. I will hold on tightly to all your promises. I will take them deep in my heart and mind and life so I will be able to escape all the corruption in the world. Make me effective and productive for you. Amen

Possess These Qualities In Increasing Measure

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - 2 Peter 1:5-9 - Possess These Qualities - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – 2 Peter 1:5-9 – Possess These Qualities – Growing As Disciples

Make Every Effort

Do you want to know my will? Do you want to know what I want you to do in life? Yes, I want to know your will. I would like to know what you want me to do in life. When you think of my will, is your first thought about doing something? Yes, it is. What else is there? Are you completely defined by what you do? Have you given much thought to who you are? Are you thinking at all about who you will become? I have thought a lot about what I might do and very little about who I am. I have thought even less about who I might become. Have I been thinking too much about what I will do and way too little about who I am or who I will become? You tell me. I’m guessing that you want me to think more about who I am and who I will become. Good guess.

Who are you? I am your creation. You made me. I am your child. You are my Father. I am your follower. You are my Savior and Lord. You called me to come to you. You have forgiven and cleansed me of all my sin. You have given me a new life to live with and for you. I am your disciple. You are teaching and training me. You are guiding and directing me. You are molding and shaping my life. You are making me into the person you want me to become. Yes, I am. I am your servant. You have given me places to go and things to do for you. I am your witness. You want me to be your light in the world. You want to draw others to you through my life. Yes, I do.

Who will you need to be in order to be an effective and productive witness for me in the world? I will need to be the person that you have called me to become. Who have I called you to become? You have called me to become a person of character. If I do not have good character I will be an ineffective and unproductive witness for you in the world. No one will be drawn to you through my life if I have not allowed you to develop my character. How will you know when you are a person of good character? Who will be your example and role model? Who will you follow? Who would you like to look like? I will follow you. I want to begin to look like you. You are my example. You are my role model. You want me to become like you. Yes, I do. Will you allow me to develop your character? Will you also make every effort to develop your character? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will make very effort to develop qualities of good character so that I am not ineffective and unproductive as I come to know, love and follow you. I invite you to do your work in me. Mold and shape my life so that I am the person you called me to be. Amen

Keep You From Being Ineffective

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 46 - 2 Peter 1:5-9 - Keep You From Being Ineffective - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 46 – 2 Peter 1:5-9 – Keep You From Being Ineffective – Growing As Disciples

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins.  2 Peter 1:5-9 (NIV)

Every Effort

Do you want to be effective and fruitful as you follow and serve me? Do you believe that I have given you everything you need to possess and live a godly life in increasing measure? Yes, I want to be fruitful and effective as I follow and serve you. I want to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and your glory. I want my life to have made a difference and counted for something special. I know that apart from you I can do nothing of lasting and eternal value. There is nothing I want more than to be effective and fruitful as I follow and serve you. That is the desire of my heart. I am counting on you to make that happen in and through me. Yes, I can see that in you. I do believe that you have given me everything I need to possess and live a godly life in increasing measure. How have I done that for you? First you gave yourself for me. You paid for my sins on the cross. You made it so I could be forgiven and cleansed of all my unrighteousness. You broke the power of sin over my life. You have given me a new life to live as I follow you as my Savior and Lord. Yes, I have done all this for you. Your work in and for me has continued. How so? You have allowed me to know you. You have drawn me to you. As I spend time with you in your presence I am being changed day by day. You are teaching me your will and ways through your word. You are changing my heart and transforming my mind as I listen to all that you have to say to me. You are molding and shaping my life. You are making me into the person you want me to be. I am becoming more like you. Yes, I am doing all this in you, with you and for you so that you will be able to live the life that I have called you to live.

What will happen if you do or don’t possess godly qualities in increasing measure? What must you do if you want to possess godly qualities in increasing measure? If I don’t possess godly qualities in increasing measure I will not be able to live the life that you have called me to live. I will be ineffective and unfruitful for you. I will have lived a wasted life that wasn’t able to do what you have given me to do for you. That’s right. Why won’t this be true of you? I will keep coming to you to meet with you in your word. I will keep on listening to all that you have to say to me. I will continue to allow you to mold and shape my life. I will make every effort to possess godly qualities in increasing measure. Yes, you will.

Lord, thank you that I have been given everything I need for life and godliness as I follow you as my Savior and Lord. I will make every effort to possess godly qualities in increasing measure. I want to be effective and fruitful for you. Amen
