Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Philemon 1:4-7 – Remember You – Growing As Disciples

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints. Philemon 1:4-7 (NIV)

Who Are You Remembering?

Who are you remembering in your prayers? That is a very good question for which I do not have a very good answer. What do you mean by that? I have not been faithfully praying for others. Oh, I do pray for others, but not nearly enough, of that I am sure. You are sure? Yes, I am sure.

What would you like me to do for you? I would like you to help me to pray for others. I would like you to give me a heart to pray for others. I would like you to give me wisdom and knowledge and insight into how I will be able to pray for others. I would like you to prompt me as to when and where and how and why to pray for others. I would like you to take me out of my own little circle of self-absorption, so I can hear and see and know what others need. Are those your prayers? Yes, those are my prayers. I will hear and answer those prayers.

I do want you to know something about yourself. What’s that? You are not nearly as self-absorbed as you think. How so? You have been very willing and generous in giving away your time, talent and resources in service to others. I have found great joy in watching your sacrificial service to others. Really? Yes, really.

But, you are completely correct in knowing that you need to grow in praying for others. I want to develop a heart of love in you that will lead you to pray intercessory prayers for others. Will you allow me to do this work in and through you? Will you enter into my school of intercessory prayer? Yes Lord, I will.

Let’s start right now. Who needs to grow in their love for others? Who needs to begin giving thanks for others? Who needs to be more active in sharing their faith? Who needs to know more fully all that they have in me? Who needs to be able to refresh the hearts of others? Well, I hate to sound self-absorbed. But, I need all these things. Yes, you do. As you pray these things for others you will also receive them for yourself. Will you begin praying these prayers? Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, guide me to pray prayers of thanksgiving for others. Help me to pray that others will have a full understanding of all they have in you. Help me to pray that others will be active in sharing their faith. Help me to be refreshed and to refresh others as I pray. Amen
