Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – 1 Kings 19:11-12 – A Gentle Whisper – Growing As Disciples
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:11-12 (NIV)
Whispering
Do you want to hear from me? Do you want to hear my voice speaking to you? How do you think I will speak to you? Yes, I want to hear from you. Nothing would be better than to hear your voice speaking to me. I’m not sure how you will speak to me. I’m guessing that you will speak to me in any number of ways. I think the ways that you might speak to me could be almost endless. I’m not sure that I understand your question. Let me ask you another. Go ahead, I’m listening. Do you think that I will shout at you? No, I don’t think you will shout at me. It’s possible that you might speak to me in that way in an extreme situation. Have I ever spoken to you in that way before? No, you have not. But, I’m open to that possibility. That’s good. Have I ever spoken to you in a gentle whisper? Yes, you have spoken to me in a gentle whisper many times before. That’s true.
Why do you think I speak to you in a gentle whispers? Your whispers place me in a position to hear from you. Your whispers have helped me to quiet myself before you. Your whispers have caused me to be still in your presence. Your whispers have caused me to humble myself before you as I come with a listening heart. Your whispers have developed my reliance on you. I also know that you want me to live in a close and intimate relationship with you. Your whispers have drawn me nearer to you. Your whispers have caused me to lean into you so that I can hear your voice. I can’t remain distant from you if I want your whispers to guard and guide and grace my life. No you cannot. Will you draw near to me? Will you turn your ear to me? Will you lean into me so you can hear my voice whispering to you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.
Lord, I will humble myself at your feet. I will stop to listen and quiet myself before you. I will live in an intimate relationship with you. I will draw near to you and lean in close so I can hear your whispers. Guard and guide and grace my life with your whispers. Amen
