Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Acts 4:31 – Spoke The Word – Growing As Disciples

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:31 (NIV)

Speak Boldly

That is what I would like to be able to do. What’s that? I would like to be able to speak your word boldly. Why is that? I want to be used by you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. I would like to see a multitude of people come to know and love and follow and serve you through the work you give to me. I am very tired of operating under my own strength. I know that I will not be able to go where you guide me and do what you ask me by functioning under my own power. No, you will not.

How do you think I will make you able to do the work I give you to do? You will empower me by your Holy Spirit living and moving and working in and through me. You know that? Yes, I know that. If you know that, then why do you not ask for that? I’m not sure what you mean. How often have you asked for my Holy Spirit to fill you? How frequently have you asked my Holy Spirit to move and work in and through you? Not nearly enough. Not frequently enough, of that I am certain.

What is more important your hard work or your hard prayers? I am sure that my prayers to you are far more important than the work that I might attempt to do for you. Don’t think that one is not needed. Both are required. But, what have you done? I have launched off on my own and used my best efforts to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Is that all? Is there something else that might be out of alignment with my will and my ways? I suppose so. Tell me about it. I have frequently engaged in many solo efforts. I have not joined together with my fellow believers. Both not relying on my Holy Spirit and not working together with your fellow believers is not good. No, it is not.

What will you do differently? I will ask your Holy Spirit to fill and empower me to do your work. I will gather in prayer with my fellow believers to engage in the work that you have given us to do for you. That will be very good. Then you will be able to speak boldly for me. Then you will bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom. Then a multitude of people will come to know and love and follow and serve me. That is what I want. That is the desire of my heart. That is very good.

Holy Spirit, here I am. I am waiting for you to fill me. I am waiting for you to empower me. I am asking you to powerfully use me. Help me to boldly speak the word of God so that a multitude of people will be able to come to know and love and serve God. Amen

After They Prayed

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Holy Spirit - Acts 4:31 - After They Prayed - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Holy Spirit – Acts 4:31 – After They Prayed – Growing As Disciples

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:31 (NIV)

Boldly Speak

That Is what I want. What’s that? I want to be able to boldly speak your word. That is a very good desire. Is that it? Is there anything else or more that you want? I want much more. Not only that, I want to be able to boldly and powerfully serve you whenever you call me, wherever you send me and however you want to use me. What end goal do you have on your heart and in your mind? I want to be able to know and do your will. I want to do what is pleasing in your sight. I want to be able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to be well used by you. Those are all very good desires as well.

Its sounds to me like you have learned some very important lessons. Tell me what lessons you have learned. I have learned that apart from you I can do nothing. With my own efforts and in my own strength I can do nothing. Without your power I am powerless. With your help my efforts will be fruitless. Only you can make me able to know and do your will. So, what will you continue to do? I will come to you to ask you for your help. Will your asking me for my help be a onetime effort or an infrequent request? No, not at all. I will live my life in moment by moment dependence on you. I will continue to ask you for all that I need. I will live my life in a constant dialogue with you. That will be very good. Why do you suppose it is so good that you will keep on praying to me? You want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. Yes, I do. What will happen to you, as you keep on living in an intimate relationship with me? I will be changed. My heart will be changed. My mind will be transformed. I will begin to think your thoughts. I will learn to speak your words. I will take action by doing your deeds. You will guide my life as I keep on following you. Yes, I will do all these things for you.

I will tell you a secret. What’s that? You want what I want. Your prayers are in alignment with my will. I will make you able to boldly speak my word and powerfully serve me, whenever I call you, wherever I send you and however I want to use you. For that, I am so very thankful. That is very good.

Holy Spirt, in my own efforts and with my own strength I am quite timid. I am weak. I am powerless. Without your power and I can do nothing. Fill, empower and use me. Give me the freedom to speak boldly so I can bear abundant fruit for the kingdom of God. Amen
