Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Romans 12:2 – Transformed – Growing As Disciples

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Renewed Mind

I want to know you. I want to know your thoughts. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want all my thoughts and words and deeds to be guided by you. In every way, I want my life to be a living sacrifice that is fully pleasing to you. How can I know your will and walk in your ways? What will help and hinder me from doing what is pleasing to you? How can I be strengthened to know and do your will? The desires of your heart are pleasing to me. The questions of your mind are very good.

I have broken the power of sin and the world over your life. You have turned away from your sin and the world to follow and serve me. You have left your old life behind. You are now living the new life that I have given you to live. That’s the good news. What’s the bad news? Even though you are not of the world, you are still living in the world. The world is a very powerful and evil force. Every day, you are being bombarded with the thoughts and opinions of the world. The world will never stop trying to conform you into it’s pattern of values and practices. If you do nothing you will be allowing yourself to be conformed to the world. You will think like the world thinks. You will speak like the world speaks. You will act like the world acts. You will not know my will. You will not walk in my ways. You will not do what is pleasing to me. In no way will you stand out as being different from the world. You will not shine brightly for me. You will not be a witness for me in the world. All of this is very bad news. Yes, it is. But, none of this will be true of you.

Day by day I will be renewing and transforming your mind. You will know my thoughts. You will walk in my ways. You will be able to know and do my will. How will all of this be possible? How will you do this work in me? How will you work through me? You will meet with me in my word. You will set apart a time and a place where we will meet together. You will live in an intimate relationship with me. Day by day, you will draw near to me and I will draw near to you. You will listen attentively to all that I have to say to you. You will hear and treasure my word. You will take my word into your heart and mind and life. My word will feed and sustain you. My word will strengthen and empower you. My word will transform you. You will put my word into practice as you love, follow and serve me.  Yes Lord, I will. Then all of these things will be true of you. Then you will know and do my will.

Lord, at one time my mind was under the influence of the world. My thoughts, words and deeds were conformed to the world. You broke the power of the world over me. Now, use your word to renew and transform my mind so I can know and do your will. Amen

Renewing Of Your Mind

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:2 – Renewing Of Your Mind – Growing As Disciples

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Know And Do

I want to be able to know your will. That’s good. That’s not enough. What do you mean by that? It is not enough for me to know your will. I want to be able to do your will. That’s even better. I would never want you to only know my will. You are right to want to put my will into practice. You and I share the same desire.

You have had more of a struggle with doing my will. Knowing my will has not been as much of a problem for you. That’s true. If you simply say that you want to do my will, that is only a good start. Why is that? In your own strength, with your own abilities alone, you will never be able to do my will. I have no doubt about that. How will I ever be able to know and do your will? How will you come to know my will? I will come to meet with you in your word. How often? I will come to meet with you in your word daily. There is not a day that I don’t need to hear from you. That will be very good. You can’t come to meet with me in my word and remain the same. Why is that? As you draw near to me, I will draw near to you. In my presence, you will be changed. In my presence, you will be transformed. I will speak my word into your heart and mind and life. You will begin to think my thoughts. You will desire to do my will. You will come to know the truth. The truth will set you free. What once enslaved you will be broken. Sin will have no power over you. You will be released from the chains that have held you captive. My word will strengthen you against temptation. My word will make you able to stand against evil. It will be no burden for you to follow and obey me. It will be your desire to do what is pleasing in my sight. You will grow to want to go wherever I guide you. You will be thrilled to do whatever I ask of you. I will make you a new person. I will give you a new heart and mind and life with which you can fully love, follow and serve me. That is what I want. That is what I desire. Yes, I know. That is very good.

Lord, I will not allow my mind to be conformed to the patterns, practices and values of the world. Instead, I will allow your word to renew and transform my mind. Use your word to help me to know your will. Use your word to strengthen me to do your will. Amen
