Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Colossians 4:2-4 – May Open A Door – Growing As Disciples

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Colossians 4:2-4 (NIV)

Opportunity

How will I ever be able to recognize opportunities to be a witness for you in the world? How will I ever be able to walk through doors of opportunity so I can boldly proclaim the good news of the Gospel to others? Those are very good questions. It is very easy to veer off course and lose sight of your mission. You do know what is your ultimate mission in life? Yes, I do. Let me hear you say what is your ultimate mission in life. My ultimate mission in life is to know you and make you known to others. There is no better or more simple way to state my ultimate mission and goal in life. That is quite clear. Yes, it is. There is no higher goal or greater purpose in life than to know you and make you known. No, there is not. I’m very glad that you have this mission and goal firmly fixed in your heart and mind and life.

With your mission and goal firmly fixed in your heart and mind and life, your questions should be easy for you to answer. Really? Yes, really. So, I will wait to hear your answers. If I want to come to know you, I will spend time with you in prayer. In fact, my life will become a constant dialogue of prayer, if I really hope to know and love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. So, I will devote myself to living a prayer filled life with you. I will listen to your voice. I will receive your instructions. I will follow your guidance. I will be praying and watching as I walk through life with you. How will I ever fail to recognize opportunities to be a witness for you if I am constantly living in an intimate relationship with you? You won’t. As I am living in an intimate relationship with you, I will taste your kindness, mercy and love. I will experience your overflowing goodness. My heart will be set on fire to want to serve you. I will not be able to contain all that you have given to me. With a heart filled with boldness, your kindness, mercy and love will overflow my life. It will be my heart’s desire to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel to others. I will want others to come to know you. I will passionately share all that you have done for me. I will want others to receive you and all that you have given to me. Yes, you will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, help me to be watchful and thankful in prayer as I go through each of my days. Help me to see and hear what you want me to notice. Open up opportunities for me to be a witness and share the Good News of new life in Christ with others. Amen

Full Of Grace

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Colossians 4:2-6 - Every Opportunity - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Colossians 4:2-6 – Every Opportunity – Growing As Disciples

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.  Colossians 4:2-6 (NIV)

Every Opportunity

Are your eyes wide open to what I want you to see?  Are your ears attentive to all that I want to say to you?  I’m sure that I don’t see all you want to show me.  I’m positive I don’t hear all that you are saying to me.  Help me to see and listen.  It is my desire to be in step and in tune with you.  I don’t want to miss a beat.  Are you sure that you really want my help?  Yes Lord, I do want your help.

To see and hear me clearly you must devote yourself to prayer.  I don’t mean that you must lock yourself up in a room and do nothing but pray.  Your prayer life will start and be nourished in that secret room and place of prayer.  You must never give up setting aside time to meet with me in solitude, apart from the noise of your busy life.  Will you continue to allow me to teach and train and prepare you in our times together?  Yes Lord, I will.

I want you to carry our times of prayer into your life, throughout the day.  Have an attitude of prayer.  Be listening and watching with prayerful ears and eyes.  Keep one ear and eye on earth and the other ear and eye on me.  I will guide and direct your prayers.  Everything you see and hear will become a subject matter of prayer.

In prayer filled moments throughout your day I will give you opportunities to minister to others.  I will use you as my vessel.  My spirit will empower you to do all that I ask you to do.  Don’t shrink back from opportunities that I will give to you.  Be bold and full of grace as you speak to others about the new life they can have in me.  Your speech will be like salt that seasons life and will taste good to others.  They will see my life in you and ask you how they can come to know me and become one of my children.  They will desire the new life of forgiveness and salvation that I will freely give to them.

Will you devote yourself to prayer and be watchful; listening to all that I want you to see and hear?  Will you carry your prayer into your day?  Will you act when I give you opportunities to minister to others?  Yes Lord, I will act. I will speak with the words you give. I will make the most of every opportunity you give to me. That will be very good.

Lord, I will devote myself to prayer. I will be watchful and thankful. I will be looking for every opportunity to minister to others. Help my conversation to be always filled with grace so I will know how to answer everyone. Help me to clearly proclaim the gospel. Amen

Watchful

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - Colossians 4:2 - Watchful - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Colossians 4:2 – Watchful – Growing As Disciples

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Colossians 4:2 (NIV)

Devoted To Prayer

What would your life look like if you were to devote yourself to prayer? What would you do that you are not now doing? Those are good questions. I want to devote myself to prayer. I will devote myself to prayer. I think it is important to start by saying yes to that decision. That’s true. I know that you want me to devote myself to meeting with you in prayer. I can hear you calling me to come to you. That’s good. I know that you are inviting to come into your presence to meet with you. You want me to draw near to you as you draw near to me. Yes, I do.

I have not been fully devoted to prayer. I have been praying daily. I have been meeting regularly with you in prayer. But, I know that you want to take me deeper. You want to develop my life of prayer with you. Yes, I do. I’m not sure what that will look like. There is only one thing that I know for certain. What’s that? You will develop and deepen my life of prayer with you if I make myself fully available to you. How will you do that? I will set apart a time and a place to meet with you in prayer. I will enter your classroom of prayer. I will draw near to you. I will remain in your presence. I will be still before you. I will allow you to teach and train me how to pray. I will pray the prayers that you give me to pray. That will be very good.

Do you have something you would like to ask me? I would like you to help me to be devoted to you in prayer. Give me an insatiable hunger to meet with you in prayer. Make me to be an enthusiastic student of prayer. Help me to be watchful to whatever you want to show me. Help me to listen attentively to your voice. Help me to know your will. Guide my steps. Direct my path. Guard my life. Lead me on this journey of prayer with you. Help me to live my life in a constant dialogue of prayer with you. Do all your work in me. Help me to live the life of prayer that you are calling me to live. Do you believe that I will hear and answer these prayers of yours? Yes, I do. Why is that? You have given me this desire to be devoted to you in prayer. This desire that you have given to me, you will surely grant. Yes, I will.

Lord, I will devote myself to living a life of prayer with you. I will set apart a time and a place to meet every day in prayer with you. Use our time together to help me to see what you want to show me. Help me to be watchful and thankful as I pray to you. Amen
